I was fortunate enough to watch this race (and others on Thursday Night Thunder) on ESPN. Man, those were the good old days. Live USAC midget and sprint car racing at these crazy bullrings. This particular race was insane.
Remember this night. Thunderstorm ended the race after the crash. Talked to Bob Ciconi under the grandstand. I was concerned for him. I thought he had internal injuries. He laughed at me and said, he about bit his tongue off in the crash, and that was where the blood was coming from. He was definitely one of the more colorful drivers/caricatures back then.
I remember this crash well. Ended Don Schillings racing career. He went on to build a car for Doug Kalitta that dominated the pavement races. Doug has since moved on to NHRA.
