  • Todays video I thought I would take you with me on bird photography from start to finish. And show you my thoughts and some tips and tricks both in the field and in lightroom. So I took my blind from tragopan and my camera with me to photograph small birds. Hopefully you are all well and can use some tips for your self.

If you haven't got fast lens and are having trouble with noise? The best thing to do is ..
    1. Buy topaz de noise and photoshop
Then learn how to use the quick select tool Then you can separate the background annd add different types of blur too it.
Their are plenty of people on you youtube who teach this.
Stay safe 🙂 I really enjoy your videos ,I love your passion 👍

Thanks for the inside. I look watching you videos. One can really feel your passion. Very authentic. I have to admit that I haven´t watched all videos. However, in one you used the chair blind. I was thinking of getting a smiliar one. But now you are using a larger tent. Are you still using the chair blind or have you completely switched? The new one looks bulkier and heavier to carry around. Thanks!
One side note on cropping on Lightroom. I really like to hit the letter L (for lightbox) twice before cropping an image. That gives you a better "preview" of the result. Maybe you would like to try that. :-)

    I have a question for you. I use D500+ 500mm pf
I handheld while birds are perched. I use single point autofocus. In such cases, I don't want to bump up my shutter speed so I keep it low somewhere in between 650 or 850. I have back button focus enabled and so when I focus on the subject, the focus locks+ vr engaged. Since because the subject is not moving, I release the focus button so it just keep it locked and I fire the shutter button. The Issue here is that the VR is dis engaged because It works only when I keep pressing the back button autofocus. I don't get great images. Can you please share me your thoughts.

@@daviddowling9830 the Nikon 200-500mm f5.6 is a great lens and a great combo with the D850, plus it's more versatile than the 500pf, the pf is on the lighter side and slightly faster autofocus, but for me not worth the cost for a f5.6 lens. The 200-500 has never let me down for over three years now, been used with the D500 and D850.

It's your product of course, and it's nice, but a bit flat for my taste.
Allow me to describe "my" similar image. I would go for a slightly better rendering of the existing natural background, easily obtainable with a bit smaller aperture opening giving you a differentiated bokeh. You have no foreground to spoil with a deepening of the DOF. Then I think you created a number of repeating patterns by using the spot removing tool. You could of course zoom in and get much more space for the dotting, and at the same time the clone tool would probably be easier to control in order to preserve the natural structure and the direction of the small feathers. Finally - to my taste - the birch branch became a bit too tinted, though I admit that the tint creates a good color contrast to the current background. I guess you use manual focus, and I wonder if the Canon is unable to shoot silently with bursts? The only unknown parameter watched from my chair is the distance between your tent and the branch.

If you have your subject pre arranged and you are also going to crop as much as you did, why use a 16mp FX body when you could have used the D500. The D500 would have given you more than about twice the resolution.

Thanks for a "behind the scenes" video. I have a question regarding sharpness. On my Nikons, to review a photo I press on the center command dial to zoom in, I believe 1:1 and in LR, I can go even further like 2:1 or closer. A shot will be sharp at 1:1 in review, but softer the closer I go. What do you use as a "limit" ratio for a 8x10 print? Hope this makes sense. Thanks Trond.

@@trondwestby5264 looking back, it was a really poorly worded question and I thought people that read that are going to think I am nuts, sorry. On Nikon, in reviewing the shots on rear LCD, as I zoom in by pushing the "+"key, a horizontal line on lower right turns green at near maximum. I believe that is one to one. No offence, but am I the only one who's thinking it took you extremely long to edit this photo? I mean that was a decent shot of a blue tit on a branch, nothing really complicated and challenging in terms of editing workflow. Have shot a very similar pic a while ago (of the same species) and it took me maybe 1-1.5 minutes editing it and only used lightroom for that. For me it looks like you are making things a bit "complicated". Is this your "everyday" workflow? Just asking cause you called it "quick editing" ;-) Of course at the end, it's the result that is counting and your pic is nice, but really would love to hear more about your standard workflow ..... anyway, nice video man and keep up your good work!

Obviously the shutter noise scared the bird even though it returned so would not a longer lens and being a little further away from the perch be better? I must admit I have a beef about having such expensive camera stuff and then having to do so much work on the computer when for the price of the gear it should be good enough in camera. I know many Pro's do post production but I feel if you cannot get it right using the camera and have to do so much post production then one cannot call oneself a good photographer. Sorry if that sounds , bad, it is just the way I see it no matter who the photographer is.
