I swear this man has algorithmic programming on my schedule. Seems every single door job I have this month, he has a video that follows suite prior to the day LOL. Like last week, I had a floor job then the day before... BOOM "How to lay the perfect floor". If this was a permission, I accept to tap my life, keep helping me improve sir!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY Well of course! I put on my grey shirt and blue jeans, pop the OLFA 25mm blade in my back pocket and get at it. You've changed perspective on everything I do, I'm faster, more efficient and more precise. I can rip a board quick wih my handsaw like you now lol. Even picked up a method from one of your earlier videos i believe... Today I had to cut a piece of plywood to fill in for the piece of the subfloor I forgot when i picked up a client payment. So I ever so quickly measured one end(4") and the other(3 1/2") total width of 33", ran outside, marked at 33", marked the 4" and 3 1/2 marks, drew my line with my leveler, made the cut and popped it right in within 20 seconds. WAAAAY faster than my over analyzing methods I used. You taught me to just freakin Do it! I even bring my 7/11 cup and pop it in the toilet hole when I do bathrooms to cover that stank hole up LOL Thanks JEFF! Watching your "Build a Beautiful Cedar Deck" video now although I'm doing a rear patio enclosure but the methods are the same.
A few months ago I replaced 3 doors at a house built in the 1900s. Glad to see I did everything correctly. The fun part of doing a house so old is each measurement for the length and width on each side was different. The whole house is just one big uneven mess. One thing I also did which probably isnt needed, after using the glue I also used two small nails on each side when reinstalling the bottom core of the door. Just in case the glue fails after a few years the nails will be there to hold it into place.
I would not have known how to do this correctly if it were not for you. I was getting ready to cut the bottom piece on the table saw when I thought let's watch a bit more. Thank you Jeff for a great how-to video.
As always while i'm building my own basement... i came into a door sizing issue. And as ALWAYS here you are to the rescue!!! I wish I could just hire you instead hahaha! you're the best!
Here's a friendly tip on how to eliminate an OSHA violation where live outlets are uncovered (and keep the painters happy) Install a plate backwards over the duplex. (live screw terminals exposed) The outward curve of the plate gives the painter enough to cut in around the outlet saving a pricey fine, and their brush :~) Thanks for the instruction. Love watching someone who's done it before gettin' it done 👍
Well, we are always "on site" given we're at home. It's easier for us to grab something off the scrap pile and cut a plug to fit than to tear apart the end of the door and clean it up. Plus, I tend to be thrifty and think I will save the cut off half of the door and repurpose it in some way. I have closed in some transoms with the ends of 6 panel doors, and used the halves of others for attic access doors -- short stubby doors like this playroom door. I guess I could make a paneled box with the door skins, haven't yet. Just hate to destroy them until I have decided there's no use.
I enjoy the comment about the recyclable door and not to punch it, that's why I'm watching this to get new doors from punches could i ask for your reccomendation for tools for cutting down doors and drills i bought one but was very cheap, didnt go through brick work for other jobs etc thanks
We are having are basement refinished and the doors under the soffits have to be cut down. They want to butt the door casing up against the ceiling. Is that a good idea? Will it look weird? Thanks!
Hi Jeff; I'm not sure if this is where a member posts a question but here goes... I just bought a great new interior door mat but my exterior door that swings in doesn't clear it. If I remove the door and cut it "up" I'll be letting more cold air in this old house so do I also have to replace the threshold?
Ok found the answer to my problem. Door to long now with the vinyl plank install. Problem is I don't have a planer. Guess I'm gonna have to get one lol.
I have 2 doors that I would need to take off 1/8" down the whole door (80"). Would u recommend using a hand planner like you used at the end of the video? Unfortunately a standard 30x80 door won't fit into my door opening. Darn manufactured homes!
I need to cut 1/2 inch off the width of a solid wood door. The opening will only accommodate a door thats 35 1/2 inches wide. What is the best tool to use?
I wish I found this video two weeks ago!!!!!! I live in a house built in the 80s. We bought new doors thinking we just need to buy new doors and hang them. NOPE we were wrong! Lol we used a oscillating tool to trim the door frame. (Seen from another video and it look easy lol we were wrong again! ) lol really wish I seen this video and then maybe we didn’t have to spend 20 hours on 7 doors......
Dude, so I installed those door only to find out they were about 4 inches gap. So bought new doors but another snafu these are glued with silicone it is hard to strip the face off. I went to see if I could buy a strip to put in place but was gifted thin strips my conscience does not allow me to just hook.up 1 inch thick strips for I know it is weak. Can I rent a planer to do this? How can I separate the facing of doors that were glued with silicone. I have hammer and chisel away but it is a slow process. Please your feedback will be appreciated I am unskilled girl trying to do home care and maintenance.
Would i use that same trimming method of my door opening is crooked? I installs some new bi fold doors into opening where it already had some and at the top half everything has a nice gap but as it starts getting lower everything gets tight
you can with practice, and be consistent on the brand of saw you use. I've used 4 makita saws for over 30 years, the only brand I'll buy, because I know there the cut line is.
You pretty much just add material then sand and paint to match. Of course, that makes it sound like it won't take 3 weeks, 2 different kinds of wood filler, 14 coats of primer and paint, and get you about a dozen eye-rolls a day from your spouse. But in theory it's easy!
Hey, thanks for the tutorial. Im pretty sure you said to leave an inch for height when cutting down. You also said to save the end part to fill the bottom of the door. The door was only 40mm off, so if I cut into it im worried ill jeopordize that bit-I guess I could always get another bit off wood from bunnings to fit, or cut one. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated coz i nee a bedroom door!
Great Video Jeff! I have a question, is it possible to trim a set of french doors with glass windows in the middle length wise? Considering doing a project and found a set of french doors that are 32" wide each, and the space its going into is 65".
I would go with the circular saw out of the two, for sure. With a jig, not only would you be there all day but you always run the risk of it jumping around on you, ruining your straight cut and it can gnaw at and chip off your edges even if you tape it off. You could always try amazon for a planer, I got an electric one from amazon warehouse used and was able to easily plane down a few sticky parts of a solid oak door in no time. Even before a jig, I would go to the local hardware and get a manual planer lol. Jigs can be that much of a nightmare
Yes, they make door like crap nowaday. I bought a new bathroom door to replace the old one and I noticed it weighs 50% less than the old door and the particle board around the door knob is a joke compared to the old one. So, I cleaned up and painted the old then re-install the old one even with the old door being a little bend.`
i've salvaged the mdf insert and ripped new ones . personally i prefer to rip a new piece. However, his technique doesn't require more power tools, so that can be a plus for someone who doesn't have a portable table saw. easier to rip a new one in my opinion. just saying.
While you're on doors... I've searched your videos and haven't found... how to install a prehung exterior door. I'm needing to replace mine in about a week (if it ever stops raining in NC). Any chance you've got a video on the subject?

How do I change the height and width of my wife? I sometimes pretend my back porch door is the jump door of an airplane ✈️ and slide/slam it shut when she gets to talkin... So my question is, can you consider doing a video or direct me to one that fancy’s slow shutting door systems? Like the slam proof stuff....?
if you add a automatic door closer like the ones used in a garage it will work. I would also suggest talking to a therapist. Life is not supposed to be so stressful that we can't enjoy our spouse's company. You both might need some tools to deal with your frustrations and stress so you don't dump on each other. wishing you all the best.
Some in my house bashed a hole in to wall thinking the door was just mad. So they flipped it upside down and bashed another hole in the wall a little taller than the first. Got mad and rippped up the floor. :( ???? Why though.
So I’m redoing the tile in my bathroom and also installing a split jamb pre hung door. But the floor transitions into a wood floor that sits like 3/4” of an inch. Should I install the door first or the tile?
I bet the cameraman sabotaged the depth set on the saw for giggles. RE: The hollow doors, the boys at OCC on American Chopper made a career out of smashing these suckers up every episode, they wouldn't have lasted one episode with a solid panelled door.
All you gotta do to finish that is: - Repair saw kickback mark - Repaint door - Pray to Christ that the door that fell didn't just scratch up the newly installed floor - Seal the 1/32" gaps where new core was installed after owner overheard you talk about critters and is now worried about tiny spiders getting into cracks. - Clean up work area Gotta love this line of work, it's always something. Doing a “How To” video you may want to practice a little more safety. Holding wood while cutting with a circular saw, no safety glasses, be a better example for those of us who don’t know what we are doing
Everyone else used a table saw (which I don't have) to cut a new piece to fill the bottom. Jeff shows how to use existing piece.. Love this guy.

Great video. Clear, informative and entertaining.
We have always just cut a new plug to fit from scrap wood. Always interesting to see the approach of a pro on the job.
I see that sometimes and always wondered why you would arrange to have that material on site when the door already has a filler available.

molded panel doors are constructed similarly inside so small height adjustments will work.
When a door lining is wider in size how should it be fixed.. Single choice.

That is why having these tools makes all thye difference if you are trying to save the frame and trim work.
All you gotta do to finish that is:
- Repair saw kickback mark
- Repaint door
- Pray to Christ that the door that fell didn't just scratch up the newly installed floor
- Seal the 1/32" gaps where new core was installed after owner overheard you talk about critters and is now worried about tiny spiders getting into cracks.
- Clean up work area
Gotta love this line of work, it's always something. Take it easy.
