Gotta let Bobby fight till he was down, that would have been the right thing to do, he made his career off coming back from beatings and probably why he was punch goofy but he should have been able to have continuedIMO
@@chriskroell6956I know you're a real fight fan but you also know that Chacon was a natural featherweight in Mancini was a natural lightweight young and too strong I think it should have been stopped👍
HBO wasn’t available on my street, so I rented a motel room that had HBO and watched it, then went home. Warren Zevon wrote a song about that fight. Thanks for another trip down memory lane. You’ve really been putting out a lot of great content and it is greatly appreciated!
Now that is dedication to the sport...I never thought of having to rent a motel room to watch a fight...We didn't have HBO when I was a kid either, had to visit other relatives for it.
I understand completely. I was just out of high school and working my first real job when this fight took place, but still living with my mom and dad. They had HBO. My father was a big fight fan, but I would have rented a hotel room for a good fight if necessary!
Thanks Rich. Ray was not the most gifted but made the most of what he had and always in terrific condition and a nice guy. Bobby was just amazing. Nice to remember these guys.
"Size matters in two things: Pornography snd Combat Sports." I have a lot of Chacon stories and televised Ray's last fight. Bobby suffered greatly from the residual effects of boxing. While MC'ing an event in LA for the late Don Fraser, we gave Bobby an award. He put forth an emotional and funny speech.
Both of these fighters are legends.. I met Mancini here in Vero Beach Florida in the early 80s.. he was down here while his friend Mike Piazza of the dodgers was in spring training.. Bobby was well past his best at this point. I really felt like this was a gift for all his years of fighting. His fourth fight with Bazooka is one of my favorite fights. But you could make an argument for Limon. His second fight with Boza would NEVER be allowed to continue today. FIghting basically two weight classes above his best. Squandered his best years by not training properly. RIP
In his ""Boom-Boom" Mancini" song, Warren Zevon (of "Werewolves of London" fame) sang, "Hurry on early! Hurry on home! "Boom-boom" Mancini's fightin' Bobby Chacon!" Great tune! RIP, Warren...
Such a great time for boxing. I remember how the networks would showcase fighters and then match them up against each other in really big fights. The bigger fights were on HBO. Chacon - Limón 4 best fight ever. THANK YOU RICH!
Chacon had some heart He's well past his best here, fighting at the wrong weight and against Boom Boom who just had too much of everything for him. Hats of to both guys, warriors from another era. RIP Bobby. Thanks Rich!
I believe 100% the correct move by Richard Steele stopping this fight, those blows were a direct hit. As a boxer though, I’m sure Chacon felt as long as he was able to still punch he was probably not happy with the stoppage. But seeing the onslaught, Richard Steele did his job like a Professional Referee should. Love how Ray is always moving forward in every fight. Even later against Camacho, Ray always moving forward on the attack.
Hi Rich. Love your channel. I notice you have featured Boom Boom a couple of times lately. It would be great if you covered the Art Frias fight. That was a one round classic.
Even the Mancini was just too strong 💪 but Chacon was catching Mancini with some good inside counter punches . Bobby was a Legend and Mancini is my all time favourite lightweight champion 🥊
Lovely work as always. Thanks! After this I think I'm going to rewatch your Bobby Chacon video. An epic story; classic fighter; classic Rich TFH-upload. (One thing though, maybe it's just me but doesn't the audio sound like the video (of the actual match) is playing slightly too fast? Notice how the voices of the commentators sounds strangely high pitched. That's what happens when recorded sound is replayed too fast, but I guess you already know that. Anyway, thanks again!).
When people put these vintage fights 8:57 together, I appreciate the time you’re in the lead and don’t tell people in the title, or in the dialogue who wins not everybody has seen the fight or knows the result you ruin it for people
When my parents divorced I was 9 and my dad went to live with a friend of his on the south side of Youngstown about three blocks away from boom booms child hood home. We stayed with him every other weekend and he had pointed out the house to us so we ( me and my little brother) knew where it was. We rode our bikes down and knocked on the door, we asked if boom boom was home. Turns out we were2 houses off, but they told us where his house actually was. ( Different times 1984) when we knocked on the correct door Rays mother answered and she was so sweet! She reminded me of my grandmother. She introduced us to Big boom boom and told us little boom wasn't there but she would tell him we stopped! I fought in a tournament in 89 and boom boom came to the last night ( it was boom boom Mancini ko drugs tournament) I met him but didn't have a chance to tell him how nice his parents were to me!
Ray Mancini had one of the smartest managers in boxing. Chacon was popular but had just come off two brutal wars with Bazooka Limon and Cornelius Boza=Edwards and he was moving up in weight. He was basically cashing out. That Mancini was able to get a world title and defend for two years required some shrewd matchmaking - he was quite limited. I was ecstatic when the huge underdog Livingstone Bramble took him apart.
I can't see us keeping both Dalvin and Mattison....financially. We love both guys. I think it's worth trying to keep Cook because he means so much to the team...on and off the field.

I think after that fatal fight with King, Mancini was not the same. I believe he was afraid to hurt somebody really bad or being afraid to be hurt by another fighter..
Richard Steele is a controversial referee. He stole Meldrick Taylor's win over Julio Cesar Chavez with 1 second to go. The bell would have rung and Meldric would have won. Lou Duva didn't help Meldrick by jumping up and distracting him as the ref was looking his way.
He is considered controversial but I dont think the stoppage was BS, how could he know what time its, he is in the ring watching both fighters not the clock.

One of Ray’s most impressive wins. Chacon was a tough customer. Ray was too big, young and strong. It was a wise stoppage. Great post!
