- Enjoy Heat (Race) 2 of the S5000 Big Power, open-wheel racing cars from Sandown International Raceway in Victoria Australia - Sunday 22nd. Sept 2019.
This weekend was the introduction of the S5000 class of open-wheel race cars featuring Brazilian Legend and former Ferrari F1 driver, Rubens Barrichello.
Barrichello appearing the bright Red Payce S5000 Open Wheeler (not a Ferrari this time), will be joined by names like Matthew Brabham, Will Brown & a host of other competitive drivers looking to see what these five-litre open-wheel monsters are capable of.
For some background, the S5000 race car is based on a French-designed Onroak-Ligier carbon-fibre chassis and tub and is powered by a powerful, yet cost-effective Ford Coyote five-litre V8 engine, delivering around 560 horsepower to a race car barely tipping the scales at 900 kilograms.
This formula is proving to be a great combinations high-performance, very competitive racing.
The car designed with strength, safety and economy as priorities with most components being single, specified, control parts which include the Ligier safety cell and front/rear/side crash structures and an all-Australian 6 speed paddle shift transmission system, with cars built by Garry Rogers Motorsport who also designed and built the S5000's suspension.
The Aero of these cars being much less than many other FIA sanctioned open-wheel race cars allows for closer slipstreaming and closer racing as a result.
Enjoy this second heat race of what is shaping up to be a great return for high powered open-wheel racing to Australian motorsport.
Now that is what you call motor racing like it used to be,thundering race cars creating wheel to wheel action,I love it.
And the commentators do a great job too, my heart is pumping.
Hi Phil, you're right, they are great races. I think the S5000 class having less onus on aerodynamic downforce lets these cars run much closer to each other than would otherwise be possible. Glad you enjoyed the race. Cheers Jamie

Especially valuable for those of us who have become intrigued by this series but live on the other side of the world, so don't get to see it live (well, not without getting up in the middle of the night anyway!). Hello Luke, I appreciate your feedback. I hope to be able to share the entire S5000 (inaugural) series for the enjoyment of fellow race fans like ourselves. The interest in this new "Formula" is growing here in Australia and for good reason. The next round is not until November (15-17) at "The Bend Motorsport Park" in South Australia. This will be an interesting venue for the S5000's. Cheers Jamie

After life as schummi's tail-gunner, it turns out that Rubens still has the heart of a true racer. Who would have guessed? Maximum respect.
He's a thorough gentleman too it seems. So fortunate to have him at the opening of the S5000 series, a real asset to motorsport, regardless of the class.
The noise these things make is fantastic

I didn't know about this series until last week. Recently I've been saying on boards that I think OW series should NOT be adopting hybrids in order to court manufacturers and that someone like Indycar should instead use production crate engines and let tuners have at them. Here we are. S5000. It's brilliant. Leave it to Australia to understand what a good ball busting racing series can be, and to move forward by going back to basics.
I like the simplicity of the S5000's too. There is also talk of an endurance race with the new cars at our Mount Panorama circuit next year. "The Mountain" as it is affectionately known. It is a great circuit. ( www.mount-panorama.com.au/track/circuit-facts ) have a look, you will see what I mean. It is a street circuit but.... Ol' School.

it was their first race weekend, its was effectively a test session. They will be a support class at a F1 in melbourne. The class owner also own a few others here in aus one is the rights for TCR. They also last week got announced as the a winner of the a 5th race weekend at bathurst.
It will be a endurance TCR race, but these will most definately get a blast around the mountain on the weekend.

It’s been a very long time since I’ve been excited during an open wheeler race. These things are designed around the things we all want from motorsports, good looks, great v8 rumble, nose to tail battles and attitude. To see Rubens behind the wheel is awesome, this category will go far

V8 supercar sound with an open wheel twist. I like it.
They don't actually sound much like a V8 Stupidcar (thank God). They are a lot more guttural and raw.

The do sound great don't they. They are reminiscent of the old Formula 5000 cars of the 60's, 70's and early 80's, just a lot faster & safer. Thanks for your thoughts Cheers Jamie.

They do sound great don't they. I think there was some time invested on the exhaust set up for the S5000's specifically. That said Ford has done a great job with the 5.0L Coyote "Aluminator" 32-valve DOHC V-8

3:40 the sound of that intake manifold (I think that;s what it is?) when he goes off the gas is amazing.
The 5 litre naturally-aspirated quad-cam Ford Coyote V8 does sound sweet & an open-wheel class of car that weighs in at 900 kg, with 560 hp (420 kW) & 460 lb⋅ft (620 N⋅m) of torque will provide some great racing. Thanks for your comment :)

I get it less down force,mechanical grip it's cool,but why two races and all that?
The first two races were qualifying and this being the first time the S5000's have been used in anger (first real races ever), maybe there was some caution exercised. Not sure if this is how they will continue to roll out. They are cool though, I agree ;-)

I think looks, in this case, maybe deceiving. Less in the line of sight for the drivers, while still offering FIA sanctioned amounts of driver safety & protection is a good thing.

@@jamiewadley Great. Go again next year. They're doing a support race for the Grand Prix. You have to experience these things in the flesh. I was there every day. I think the three things I will remember best are the first qualifying race, when the whole field came swooping over the hill and down into Dandenong Rd corner. The place was electric. I couldn't take pictures. I just kind of stood there open mouthed. It was visceral as much as visual. I can't remember experiencing that even at an F1 event. The second thing was Rubens coming over the hill on Friday, visibly faster than anyone else. Finally those two moments when the triplet of cars: Macrow, Martin and Golding came over the hill side-by-side and finally Martin's move on Alex Davison.

Yeah, we do. Phillip Island, SMSP, The Bend and Albert Park as a support race for the AGP are all on the race list. There will also be a Bathurst round but personally, I don’t think it’s a great idea.
And by the way, anyone who was at Sandown - I was there every day - will tell you how amazing they were at the so-called “Home of Horsepower”.
This reminds me of the scene in The Crying Game, when the girl drops her dress and she has a wiener. These formula cars go by and they sound like Nascar. I don't like it.
I guess the concept behind the S5000 is for an affordable high-performance open-wheel race car. One that does not take millions to put on the track and one where the playing field is not slanted toward teams with the deepest pockets. That said, they are powered by a Ford V8, so some similarity between the note of the 5.9 litre V8's used in NASCAR and the 5.0-litre naturally-aspirated quad-cam Ford Coyote V8 is to be expected. An open-wheel class of car that weighs in at 900kg propelled by 560 hp (420 kW) of power and 460 lb⋅ft (620 N⋅m) of torque does make for an excellent racing formula. Just FYI, I believe an S5000 car costs about $300-350k (AUD). This budget would not go far in F1 and it is not what the S5000's are about. Cheers & Thanks Jamie
