Kris, I love buttons, too. A few years ago a local quilt shop was closing and one of the things she had for sale was a brass bucket of buttons. I asked the owner how she was selling them and she told me that if I was interested that I could have the entire lot for free. Stunned, I took them all home--all 25 pounds of them!
A few years ago I remember an episode of Sewing with Nancy where she interviewed a "button lady" who told her that you need to open your jars every so often so that the buttons could breathe.
Really? I didn't know that! I will be sure to open my buttons to air them out. Thanks for the tip! Wow! 25 POUNDS!? That's a lot of buttons! I am sure they are amazing!
Vintage buttons seen to follow me home. I knit and sew from vi rage patterns. My friends and I made Pearlie Kings and Queens outfits a few years back, I was the least decorated of the bunch, and my outfit still used THOUSANDS of buttons, all sewed on by hand.
My “regular” vintage buttons are sorted by color in vintage jars. I’ve got all the sets tied together with sturdy thread.
The really special antique buttons are attached to cards. They’re either sewed on, or held in with telephone wire.
Wow! What a wonderful collection you must have! I love that you use these, too! Thank you for sharing.
One of my favorite memories is of my granddaughter Bayleigh… when she was 5… she is 12 now. She would have me pour out my button jar. She would giggle like crazy as buttons rained down on her. Then we spent a long time picking them up.
Buttons are the best, aren't they? Thank you for sharing this memory. It brings back memories for me which i mentioned (I think) in this video of rummaging through my grandmother's buttons. ❤️❤️❤️
Sew many buttons! I keep mine in 1 jar.
That’s how it starts! 😀 Just kidding! I think I have more than the average sewist.
Buttons are awesome, I have collected a few and made a few, which I have used in a couple of projects, I will include in pics, I haven't forgotten. I bring my stash out every now and again look at them and pack them away 🤷♀️ a project would be great. Thank you so much my little heart done a flutter at the sight of hundreds of buttons 😁
Yes! I feel the same way. Even though it was tedious sorting them, it was also fun to touch them all and to look at some of my favorites.
Awesome ideas! Thank you for posting!
You are so welcome!
I have lots of buttons too. That's one thing that is contained, unlike how the zippers were!! I have two small toffee tins. One is mine and the other was my Aunty's. I love them too. Before my old mum died in May she couldn't do much. I gave her her old button tin and she loved going through them. Yes, I think it must be great therapy.
This is so beautiful! What great therapy for your mom. We lost my husband's mother in last May (2020). I am so sorry for you loss.
@@SewtheDistance thank you. I miss her every day.
Yes I been trying get my Collection started
They are so much fun to collect, aren't they? ❤️
I have some old buttons of my mom's and my husband's grandmother. My moms are in a cool tin. I won't be able to part with either collection, but I honestly don't use buttons often. I like the jars you used. It made the collection into beautiful room decor!
Thank you! I love the curved tops on these jars, and they were on sale last week. I couldn't resist!
I have old buttons from family; as well as those I have acquired. They are in vintage Mason jars.
What a great way to display them! I am sure they look wonderful!
How do you store the buttons on a card?
Great question! I currently have a few of them listed in my Etsy shop, so they are in a container. I also like the idea of displaying them in a frame, but I haven't done that yet with these. Maybe some art for my new space?
