Totally agree with your review. Had mine for a couple of months, sound quality is brilliant and the noise cancelling is amazing when cooking and you have pans and extractor fans going. Couple of issues I had, when I first got them the and I would do the open lid thing close to phone to check battery I kept getting the ‘not your AirPods’ msg. But I would take the airpods out of the case and they would connect as my airpods. The issue seems to have resolved itself now. Also when you drop the case, the case opens and sends the airpods flying every time. And I saw someone else’s do the same, so perhaps the hinge could be a bit more sturdy! Just small gripes though, overall brilliant.

Finally upgraded a couple of weeks ago from a pair of 1st gen (which my son was VERY happy to inherit) and I am incredibly impressed so far. Sound quality is markedly improved and I can’t get my head round the fact that in transparency mode I am actually still wearing them!
I agree with the lighting vs usb c comments, but tend to charge mine via MagSafe, so no big deal with this, although lightning charging is one of the 3 reasons I haven’t invested in a pair of AirPods Max yet (the weird bra thing and the lack of on/off being the other 2).
I cannot recommend a pair of AirPods Pro 2 enough, love ‘em!!

I got my 2s a few days ago and am very excited. Unlike my first pair, bought three years ago, these fit perfectly. The sound is incredible, better than the AirPods Max, I think. All in all, great. The only thing I can't really get to grips with is the swipe gesture volume control.

  • @jonnymarkbeadle

I got everything I was hoping for with the AirPods Pro 2. They are such a good product that I struggle to think of what could be improved in version 3. The only thing that I hope can be improved is their performance in windy conditions, where they accentuate the whoosh of the wind noise if they are in transparency or noise cancelling mode.
This is something that the 1st gen didn't suffer from because the microphone for analysing sound was in the inside edge of the AirPod next to the inside of your ear. It was much less prone to wind getting near it, but this meant the vent could get clogged with oily ear gunk which could compromise the sound quality over time.
So, they moved the microphone to the outside, but this means the wind can get to it easily. It's not an easy problem to fix, but perhaps they can do something in software (as B&O recently did with an update for the EX) to mitigate the problem.

Loved the video, Mark. I recently had a pair of APP1 which were unfortunately left in a rental car on holiday. My replacement pair of earbuds was the Nothing Ear (1) due to them being extremely budget friendly and having decent enough reviews at the time of release. However, I am now looking to replace the replacement and this is a good signpost for me for some more information! The main attraction for me now is the smart switch between devices that my current pair do not have.

Just bought a pair of these today after living with Sony XF1000 XM3's for a few years and seemingly in an eternal loop of difficult/dropping BT connectivity. The Sony's sound great, are instinctive to operate and last for an age, but after 2 hours with the AirPod Pro 2's I'm already a convert in terms of sound, transparency, noise cancellation and most of all, slick convenience of the eco system.

I bought a pair of AirPods Pro 2 to replace the 1s that I had owned for a year (both Mark Ellis influenced purchases) and I remember being stunned when I first listened to the 2s with my reference songs. The improvement was shocking. My son and wife looked at the expressions on my face and asked what was wrong. It really is remarkable.
Nits: My ears still fail the fit test more often than not, and I've tried every tip size as well as aftermarket memory foam tips. I've just resigned myself to an imperfect fit, at least according to the test. I think the Lightning charging port is related to the fact that all modern iPhones are still using that system. When Apple finally makes the move to USB-C, I think everything else will flow.

Thank you for the review Mark, I’d like to comment that I was surprised that you didn’t mention the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II which I believe ara the most direct competitor, I bought the AirPods Pro 2 and unfortunately I had to return them for a reason that I never thought about… “the fit”, yes unfortunately they kept falling off my ears which became a very annoying thing (I understand that not all ears have the same shape), so I passed to the Bose and they fit way better into my ears and according to my personal taste the sound and the noise canceling are better, now what I miss a lot is the compatibility with the iPhone 📱, more specifically the user interface but I made my decision because at the end, the more important thing to me is the fit & the sound… I would like to know your opinion about this whenever you have a moment, and thank you Mark 👍🏼

It was not worth the $259. I have a pair of KZ VXS earphones (In ear monitors-IEM) that sound much better than the APP2. And they do not set off the iPhones annoying volume warning (I don't need another pair of parents telling me what to do). The VXS do not have noise cancelling, but all earphones and headphones noise cancel when you turn the volume all the way up! And the VXS only cost $59! I still use my APP1 sometimes but my go to pair of earphones are the KZ VXS. Check them out Mark Ellis. Thanks again.

Superb piece of tech. I love it to bits. Noise cancelling for high and mid frequencies aren’t as good as the Bose Ultras but for me it’s the low end that matters the most and they are on par with the ultras in that aspect. The features with an iPhone is by far incomparable to anything else. Comfort is fantastic. Sound quality is incredible. A true masterpiece in my opinion.

As I understand it, USB-C charging will come soon but right now they couldn’t fit both the piezo speaker circuitry and USB-C charging circuitry into the case with the larger battery in the release time that was set by Apple to stick with what stock holders want.
Having a few extra months or a year to shrink down the usb-C jack and circuitry to make it work AND still be water resistant is the reason they are sticking with lightning jack on this.
Then, people will wanna buy a second gen2 set when it rereleases in a year, roughly. Just like people went and bought another set of pro-1s when the case became compatible with the magsafe charger.
They might even release it when the first usb-c iPhone hits the market.
That said there is one VERY IMPORTANT difference with the max and pro2s.
    Bluetooth.
Apple pro2s will soon (after a future firmware update) be able to pair differently.
Imagine 6 people connecting to an Apple TV-5 to watch a movie together while their kids are asleep for a slumber party.
The Max, like the Pro1, can only connect 2 devices at once.
The pro2s will be able to support a bunch of people all listening to the same song on one phone.
Imagine a rock band all using the same metronome from the Drummer’s phone.
That’s the sort of thing the next bluetooth stack/hardware version will allow.
The pro2s will need a firmware update to activate that ability, but its bluetooth radio does allow for that from my understanding.

I am tempted but I got so used to not having silicon tips in my ear by using the old 2nd gen regular airpods that I'm doubtful I'll ever wanna stick silicon in my ear.Could also be me having horrible experiences in the past and apple's silicon is actually higher quality.

They are an amazing bit of utterly tiny tech that, whilst I wasn’t massively able to spot audio quality differences from the first gen, the noise cancellation is quite literally outstanding. I’ve got some Bose QC35’s, and there really isn’t much between them for that part at all.
I never use lightning to charge them though, wireless is so easy as they just drop on the same charger as my phone or watch.

The Airpods Pro 2 sound kinda strange to my ears after using Sony buds for so lomg (I own the XMS 3/4). For me, they sound too forward (mids and higs are all over the place and there's no bass). I'm still trying to get used to them but it's painful.

8:15 - Yeah, the lack of USB-C is vaguely annoying (you're in the UK, so I can only imagine) but they do support MagSafe, Apple Watch, and Qi wireless chargers. So that's something. (full disclosure, I'm a bit of a fanboy, altho well-tempered with decades of IT experience; I _will not_ screw with someone's workflow if they're happy with it)

Good review! Could you tell us more about the social and ecological sustainability of the AirPods or the Casekoo cases that you promote? Things like fair wages, working condition in the factory, repairability, amount of recycled product used and how/where they are sourced from. What options do consumers have to dispose of them safely, e-waste is toxic and usually is dumped in poor countries. Does my consumption create social and ecological inequality? Cheers!

How did they perform for you in terms of remaining connected to your smart TV if the TV is anything but an Apple? Why does no reviewer ever mention this? If you change channel, pause, FFW, rewind, or anything that momentarily interrupts the sound output of the TV, when you resume, no sound from the Pro 2s. Didn't happen with previous Air Pod versions, doesn't happen with my Sonys. Google it. Happens with Samsung, LG and other smart TVs. Known problem since release and all firmware updates. This problem is never mentioned in YT reviews?

    • @MarkEllisReviews
      @MarkEllisReviews  8 місяців тому

It’s probably never mentioned because it hasn’t been tested by the reviewers you’ve watched. That was certainly the case with me.

The reason for Lightning on the APP2 is obvious. There are 1.5 billion iPhones in people’s pockets and not even remotely close on any other Apple product. There are hundreds of millions of people who only have iPhones and AirPods that came from Apple. Why would Apple release earbuds that charge differently than the iPhone?
