I was listening to this from a small hi-fi in the bathroom at 3:00am in rural South India over a hole in the ground while having the most horrific diarrhea of my life. Many questions came to mind when I first heard this - mainly why God had cursed my gastrointestinal system to such a horrid degree. Also, I wondered how a DJ in the middle of nowhere in South India had come upon Father John Misty and bestowed their lovely sounds upon me.
This music video makes a lot of sense to me. She came into his life and changed who he was as a person, when she saw him new and improved with other people it drove her crazy and in the end they're pulled towards each other again.
Nah. She's insecure af and used this dominatrix bit to make herself feel worthy of him/every emotional power over him. You see eat the end he's fantasizing about the blond from the bar when he's in bed with his wife (after having fetched coffee for her.)
Only when you got a gf you get plenty chances of others. When you aint its a joke. Regret i never cheated on ex and kept options open:) Sad but true as fuck. Jelous. Come back. BS
@@baronvoncrags771 I think the video mirrors the song lyrics. In the song, he uses alcohol to escape his pain as well as to punish himself. It's not serving him well anymore and he knows it, but he always comes back to it searching for the feeling it gave him in the beginning before it took over his life. That feeling of comfort and warmth. In the video, the alcohol is mirrored by his relationship with a controlling woman. He gives himself completely over to her, he wants to lose control. He has moments of clarity where he knows what's happening and he regrets it, and sees how toxic things have become. He considers going down a different, healthier path. But in the end, he goes back seeking the comfort of what he knows, and maybe with the hope that this time will be different. This time things won't go too far. The callouses on his feet show how many times he has run away, only to end up in the same spot.
I was looking for somebody like this in 2003 when I got swept up in evangelical Christian mini churches at 18. I was still the black sheep questioning certain ideals. Loving God and still not connecting with those people. I definitely feel a realness and heart that those that surrounded me claimed they had.

This song and video are proving that music needs sometimes words...I mean a philosophy and ideas, thoughts and dillemas which are common for all of us. I must say perfect combination of words, music and video material. Envy.....

When i see this video it reminds me of the lyrics of Chateau Lobby, 2:09 "First time, you let me stay the night despite your own rules You took off early to go cheat your way through film school You left a note in your perfect script: "Stay as long as you want" I haven’t left your bed since"
I think a lot of people in the comments are missing the fact that in the video he doesnt want any of this. She changed him into her image of what he should be. She controls his life behind closed doors and I think he wishes for the scene at the end where they both seem equal and peaceful. Where power isn't a factor.
I fuckin love this song, this man after my own heart is singing my life before my very ears. I love all your music! beautifully relevant and so light heartedly dire. keep on making your soul known man, not enough people know how to any more without making people do something first.
Every song by FJM that I've heard (I just recently discovered him, thanks UA-cam recommendation!) is stuck in my head, all day, every day. With The Hollies "The Air that I Breathe" thrown in. I'm wondering if I could benefit from therapy or perhaps just enjoy the voices/songs in my head.
I was startled to read this comment. I also get "The Air That I Breathe" stuck in my head. I wonder if we've ever listened to it in our heads at the same time?
I saw an interview where he said he was crying on his 22nd birthday because the beach boys had released Pet Sounds when one of them was 22 and he felt like he hadn't accomplished enough.
This guy has such a beautiful voice. It's really hard for me to explain why. And sadly there's a lot of songs of his that I don't like that much, but his voice is so deep.
@manasigodbole1399 isn't it like that with every music artist? There is no single record where I like most of the songs. For FJM, it's chateau lobby, real love baby, Hollywood forever cemetery, and this song.

Tim Porter Thank you - I was trying to figure out who this reminded me of. I love this musically; the video sure is strange, and I'd only simply heard the song when a group of friends and I googled it and this video came up! (I wonder what they think of me now - not that it matters a whole lot....)
This has the GREATEST opening line of any song recently, INCLUDING Antony and the Johnson's 'My lady story'. I challenge anyone to think of a better one.

I like this when it comes up on playlist in my car. It feels like the car is about to take flight when the chorus comes in.
I can also attest to this.
Love this comment
All of Father John Misty's songs are oddly romantic in tone, but anything but in lyrics. I love it.
🤔
he learned that from Robin
I don't know what it is about this song, but I feel like I've known it my whole life. It's an absolutely gorgeous composition.
I am officially in love with Father John Misty, his voice, his intellect and everything else about him.
Same
10 years later, I'm still in love with him and his wife Emma (featured in this video!).
