    I must say I have been in the habit of using engine braking. But it was pointed out to me that a huge benefit of using the brakes was not necessarily the effectiveness, but that it is the best and most reliable was of informing other road users behind you that you're slowing down - with the brake light. Until then, that hadn't crossed my mind.

    I also use the rear brake a lot, when coming to a stop at a junction or a set of lights i tend to be front brake, a bit of rear then east off the front when under 10mph and just use the rear as the bike comes to a stop, find the front of the bike doesn't dip when it stops doing this

    I failed mod 2 yesterday with a major - in that for the first 200m of the ride my right foot was accidentally resting on the rear brake and setting the brake light on. And now this video pops up

    Just taking my Mod 2 and felt I needed some more technical input. Stumbled on your channel and have seen a number of your vids. I'm amazed at how much I've learned from your teachings (and do question why I'm not learning them from my instructor ?!)
    Thank you so much - hugely appreciated ;-)

    Great video, as always, independent braking makes a lot more sense now. Thanks for posting that. I'll be out on the local industrial estate tonight, putting it in to practice. Passed my motorcycle theory test this morning so I'm going to spend a few months on the 125, getting good habits before I go for the Mod 1 & 2.

      Appreciate that, Terry. Congrats on the theory test. Always good to get that out the way. Practicing on a 125 a great way to start. That's exactly what I did and I personally think it makes a huge difference in not only your riding, but your confidence before moving onto a bigger bike.

      As my motorcycle training starts tomorrow I’ve been taking into account the tips you explain especially on the emergency stop. One question I have is at what point do you close the clutch to prevent stalling the bike ? This is something I’m not sure whether it’s at the same time as you stop or just after.

    • @MotoEcosse
      @MotoEcosse  2 роки тому

      @@craig9143 You want to pull in the clutch just before the stops. Don't do it earlier as that's called coasting. Coasting give you less control of the bike. And obviously don't do it once the bikes stopped as you'll probably stall it. 🤜🤛

    Another super video, thanks! Funnily, the emergency braking on my CBT, was the thing that came naturally to me. In normal riding I was constantly resting my foot on the rear brake without realising! Practice is the key and get that muscle memory going.

      Any thoughts on foot position for the rear brake? Do you hover your toe over pedal, angle your toe outwards away from the pedal or move you foot backwards on the peg until you need to use the brake? Or does it depend on the bike and rider? Just curious 😁

    • @MotoEcosse
      @MotoEcosse  3 роки тому +1

      I think every rider has their own preference really. I always ride with the ball of my foot on the peg, then move onto brake pedal when I use it. I also do the same with the gears.

    • @DoomNedwob
      @DoomNedwob 3 роки тому

      @@MotoEcosse Cheers man 👍 I'll experiment when I get my bike... hopefully not too far away. My instructor suggested angling my toe out, but that didn't feel especially natural or comfortable. Ball on the peg sounds a better option for me. We shall see.

    • @MotoEcosse
      @MotoEcosse  3 роки тому +2

      @@DoomNedwob yeah it's the way I've always ridden and the way I was taught. I always think I've you angle your foot too far out and you're leaning the bike around a corner, I'd hate to clip the road with my toes. 😫

    Hi Moto, another great video. At 6:25, you say in MOD 1 "if you lock your wheel it's an instant fail". What about if you take MOD 1 on a bike with ABS. This is then a non-issue, correct?

    • @MotoEcosse
      @MotoEcosse  3 роки тому

      Appreciate it bud. Yeah if you were to do MOD 1 on a big with ABS then it would be difficult to lock the rear wheel making the emergency brake easier. 🤜🤛

    Hi.
    Listening to your wisdom on Braking.
    Regarding the Mod 1 test,
    if you have to take it on a wet or very wet day does the Emergency stop and Hazard avoidance manoeuvres for example have to be performed with the same stopping distance as on a dry day. ????? Any leeway given for conditions.?????
    Started riding, love the channel
    Cheers
    John L.
    Glasgow.

    • @MotoEcosse
      @MotoEcosse  Рік тому

      Hi, John. Wet conditions always have to be taken with caution. This is something all schools should teach. With mod 1 speeds though in a controlled area, the stopping distance shouldn't be affected as much as public roads,. Whether the test centre will allow any leeway depends on the centre I guess. The instructor at your local school should have a good idea of what you can expect on those wetter days. 🤜🤛

    So braking at a junction= use front to start, add some rear brake then ease off the front and finish with the rear? I’ve also read some people brake using both but at a ratio say 70/30….would you suggest this?

    • @MotoEcosse
      @MotoEcosse  2 роки тому

      Sometimes the rear isn't even needed. Depends on the situation and the speed. For moving through slow traffic i.e less than 10mph or so back brake alone is fine. For slowing down for junctions I'd usually use the front brake and apply the back brake if I feel I need to scrub off a bit extra speed, as for the ratio 70/30 is absolutely fine. When using both brakes together, you always want to use more front than back. 🤜🤛
