Johan Jonatan "Jussi" Björling was a Swedish tenor. One of the leading operatic singers of the 20th century, Björling appeared for many years at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City and less frequently at the major European opera houses, including the Royal Opera House in London and La Scala in Milan. He sang the Italian, French and Russian opera repertory with taste.
Mario Lanza was an American tenor, actor, and Hollywood film star of the late 1940s and the 1950s of Italian descent. Lanza began studying to be a professional singer at the age of 16. After appearing at the Hollywood Bowl in 1947, Lanza signed a seven-year film contract with Louis B. Mayer, the head of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, who saw his performance and was impressed by his singing. Prior to that, the adult Lanza sang only two performances of an opera. The following year (1948), however, he sang the role of Pinkerton in Puccini's Madame Butterfly in New Orleans. His film debut for MGM was in That Midnight Kiss (1949) with Kathryn Grayson and Ethel Barrymore. A year later, in The Toast of New Orleans, his featured popular song "Be My Love" became his first million-selling hit. In 1951, he played the role of tenor Enrico Caruso, his idol, in the biopic The Great Caruso, which produced another million-seller with "The Loveliest Night of the Year" (a song which used the melody of Sobre las Olas). The Great Caruso was the top-grossing film that year. The title song of his next film, Because You're Mine, was his final million-selling hit song. The song went on to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.
Beniamino Gigli was an Italian opera singer. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest tenors of his generation. Early in his career, Gigli was known for a beautiful, soft and honey-like lyric voice, with incredible mezza-voice, allowing him to sing light, lyrical roles. As he grew older, his voice developed some dramatic qualities, enabling him to sing heavier roles like Ràdames in Aida and Cavaradossi in Tosca. Some critics say that he was overemotional during his performances, often resolving to sobbing and, in some cases, exaggerations.

Lanza died on this day, Oct.7th 1959 at age 38, a great voice even if not a great opera singer, he had a very beautiful voice, no matter what anybody says IMO. RIP Mario Lanza 1921-1959.
Lanza could have been an opera singer if he had chosen to do so.
In my mind he was the best ever.
I was a teenager when he became famous. There has never been anyone like him since. He was simply wonderful.
Yes, he sure had the voice for it, one of the greatest natural voices of all time, but perhaps he chose the best path for him to great fame, it takes more then just voice for the opera, to be and stay on top, that said he had the voice to be one of the greatest of all time in the world of opera. The voice he had for me, IMO was one of the most beautiful of all time.

Mario Lamzo is Still my favourite of all tenors, I'm 83 I first heard him in
my teens and fell in love with his voice ,when he died was a great tragedy, even now I have a feeling of loss when I listen on U Tube on TV thank you for this,🥰🥰🥰

Lanza died 63 years ago today, Oct. 7th 1959 at age 38, a tragedy of success, for a great natural voice. Gigli passed away in 1957 at age 67 and Jussi Bjoerling in 1960 at age 49. All three had beautiful voices.

What a wonderful collection from my three favourite tenors. I was doing miserable housework when this popped up and took me to another dimension, I have become mesmerised by the sheer beauty of their voices. Listening to this for the first, I’m sure it’s not going to be the last.
I remember my father reading the newspaper article, announcing the death of Mario Lanza. We were both sad.
I’m so grateful that we can still listen to them.

I’ve said it before, Lanza was out of this league,. He needed microphone to be heard. Gigli and Bjoerling could flll the Met with their voices without a mike. They did not have very powerful voices but could project it to the most distant seats. Mario Lanza could not sing opera. He tried concerts but could not be heard beyond the fourth line of seats.

Mário Lanza foi genial porém não mais do que Franco Corelli. Ambos nasceram em 1921, ano do falecimento de Enrico Caruso.
Corelli tinha uma extensão de voz incomparável e uma capacidade de respiração inigualável.

Юсси Бьорлинг, великий тенор, с удивительно красивым голосом, у нас называют такой - лирический тенор.
К сожалению в России мы мало о нем слышали, его затмили у нас другие известные имена. Но сегодня в сети
полно его записей и можно часами наслаждаться его чарующим голосом.
Великие - это Франко Корелли, Джузеппе Ди Стефано, Марио Дель Монако,а Бьёрлинг один из теноров, которым не повезло петь в расцвете бельканто в Италии. Причём, если Вы послушаете Юси до стажировки в Италии, и после, то как говорят в Одессе, две большие разницы. Кстати лучший голос ХХ века по мнению легендарного Тосканини- Марио Ланца, хотя судьба не дала ему шанса спеть в Ла Скала

Кстати, Тосканини недолюбливал Карузо за недостаток "патриотизма" (оставил Италию, пел в штатах, где ему заслуженно платили несравненно больше, чем остальным, включая самого дирижера).
а у "нас" его называют лирико-драматическим, spinto тенором.

A date Correction for the information above about Lanza . The first movie film he made "the Midnight Kiss" was from 1948 (not 1949) yes, the Toast of New Orleans was from 1950, I saw it that year at age 10!! The opera Butterfly where he sang the complete role of Pinkerton twice in New Orleans, was in 1948 at age 27, Lanza was a semi classical artist, with a naturally beautiful voice . When your talking about Bjoerling and Gigli your talking about two of the greatest operatic tenors in their time in major world opera houses.

There haven’t been such Three contemporary great tenors as Gigli, Bjorling and Lanza. They were indeed like three Angels each with his characteristic. May I say, Lanza is like Michael, Gigli like Gabriel and Bjorling the loving Seraphim! I love all three and all three were of the Bel Canto school.

Three Great Tenors But For Me Mario Lanza Without Any Doubt Number One
Lanza, the best of the best in all times.
Hardly. He had movie star looks and an expressive face. That's why so many are enamored of him. He had a beautiful tone, but Björling's tone was just as beautiful, and, it was even throughout from top to bottom, unlike Lanza, who lacked the discipline to train for hours and hours on end. He was lazy.
"Learning operatic arias and performing them is much, much easier than learning entire operatic roles - generally the most
rhythmically complex music, the difficult ensemble moments, are the hard parts to learn -- and it is the discipline, or the will,
to do that that Lanza lacked. It is unfair to singers who mastered that learning process to compare them as total artists
with someone who sang the big tunes in movies and an occasional recital, but couldn't be bothered to learn an entire opera.
"That he was gifted with a beautiful natural voice, that is certainly not in question. What he lacked to make him a great opera singer was dedication and work ethic. He had none. He became a big star in the movies and made recordings. Everyone sounds great in the studio. He never had to do the daily grind of learning roles, performing, being consistent and having to put out day after day without constant retakes. When you are on stage, you are totally exposed.
I’m in the music business so I have been fortunate to know people who actually worked and sang with him - legitimate opera singers. Most of those whom I have spoken with (a few are still alive) say the voice was gorgeous, but it was not large, limited in volume and certainly not the bronze instrument we hear on recordings. And he was a difficult person, a spoiled brat (first by his family, then by the studios until they had used him up) and it got worse as he got older. That being said, he has brought joy to gazillions of people around the world, has made music lovers and opera lovers out of many people and in that I guess he succeeded. Now if he had a real work ethic, pursued a serious operatic career, studied assiduously every day,, the voice would probably have grown in size and power for the operatic stage." Donald Levine.
