Showing imperfections is the perfect way to show us we all make mistakes, even instructors, and to help us be less stressed about wanting everything to be exact.

I appreciate how you started out the video, Sandy. Your time put into all of this - the projects and the channel - is a GIFT to those of us watching. The people that feel the need to troll through your work to point out mistakes are Toxic People. They are missing something in their life if they feel the need to monitor you and give negative comments. That has been my experience in the last 15 years of dealing with certain people.
THANK YOU for the time you give of yourself and for sharing your wonderful creations! Mistakes are good - they educate us and help us get better at what we are doing. NO ONE goes through life without making mistakes. When creating art, it is BOUND to happen. It's how we deal with those mistakes is what matters! And sometimes, not dealing with them is just as well! Thanks, Sandy!

I enjoy your videos so much! I am sorry to hear that folks critique you instead of lifting up your talent- after you share your creations with us. Some people have nothing better to do.
I never notice a mistake and I certainly have the good taste not to point it out!
Anyhoo, like you said art is fun and relaxing and when I mess up I just cover it up. I did a booboo on a card today and my son told me it looked fine to him; so sometimes when we feel we have messed up, it is not really the case. It is like you said, it was intended all along. Thanks for the fall video series! Really enjoying it!!!!!

This attitude was why even when I didn't like the outcome of my first no line watercolor attempt I still uploaded it to youtube. Art especially when learning something new is never going to be perfect and that's ok because that is what makes it great

Embracing the imperfection...is the creative path. In art, like life, things don't go as planned. Great advice about how to give feedback to others. I have seen some very unkind remarks on UA-cam where people must be applying the same perfectionist standards to others. Art isn't about being perfect. Be kind to yourself and others and enjoy every moment. This card is beautiful and creative. I like the layering - you used paper that had a mistake - brilliant! Why haven't i thought of that? Thats why i watch you. Lol Thanks Sandy for wise words and creative inspiration. 😀 congrats on your book!

Thank you for your comments on perfection. I’ve tried so hard to perfect my coloring, (don’t own Copics so mostly pencils and watercolors), as well as masking. Just the other day I got so mad at myself because I couldn’t make what was in my head happen! I gave up. Totally disappointed in my ineptness! So your comments are timely and encouraging and coming from a talent such as yourself, I very much appreciate it! Thank you!!! 💖💁‍♀️

It worked out well! People who are over critical do not craft. they watch videos to see what they cannot do and because they cannot they become critical to those who do. If they tried some of these techniques they might not be so critical. I love your projects! Thanks for sharing Diane

As a card maker, I find that some people are looking for the Hallmark kind of perfection. I'm not perfect, no one is, so I embrace the imperfections, I shrug my shoulders and say to myself, "oh well, it's hand made with love." Sometimes it takes me 3 hours to finally put a card together and then I discover an imperfection, but only I can see it, believe me, most people don't see the creative mistakes.

Wow Sandy, really, such a beautiful piece! Yep, I am one of those crafters who stresses out quite easily! For me however, it's more due for reasons of health, as well as this ole mind of mine (oh, the ravages of time LOL). I've come a long way actually in reminding myself in those frustrating times that 'fun' should be the objective and the fact that my mistakes are also my lessons. As far as critiquing someone's else's work, that is something I would NEVER do! I have such respect for those like you that share your time and talent with us. I do not pretend to understand how much work goes into creating a single YT video but I have seen videos wherein creators have talked about the process and it is clearly a lot of work and time from creating, to the filming, to the voiceover and to the upload. I also love the idea of a donation supporting kids in the artworld/craft world. Thanks Sandy!

    • @SewLambitious
      @SewLambitious 6 років тому +1

Very well said, Nancy Lynn! The time put into these great channels could certainly be put into something for themselves instead. I've had to deal with a lot of critique and judgmental comments for many, many years, yet, seldom am I given recognition for all of the positive things I have done. One person in particular never said a kind word. Long story!
It's not right to look for mistakes in other's work (and some dig!), only to point out that you've caught them. Some people live for it. I've noticed in my personal life that those doing that are missing something in their life. Toxic people!

Combining both of your "themes," I have a story to tell you about a little girl's creativity. My company has a charity outreach where we purchase books and backpacks for underprivileged kids. We've basically adopted a local grade school. 2-3 times a year volunteers from my workplace go into the school to read to the kids. The librarian usually has an activity or game that we do with the kids as well. Last fall, in addition to the story, we were making Santa faces that were going to be given to some local nursing homes (they were teaching the kids about giving back in addition to us giving to the kids.) Part of the purpose of the project was to teach kids to follow directions, & I understand that perfectly well, but since they were creating an art project, I saw no reason why they couldn't stray from the original project if they wanted. One little girl got very creative with her Santa face & was making a lot of fringe for Santa's beard. I encouraged her & thought it was great that she had her own ideas of what her Santa should look like. When her teacher saw what she was doing she got angry and told the girl to stop cutting her fringe & finish the project. The teacher was clearly mad at me, too, for encouraging the girl's creativity. Luckily, this girl did not seem too disjointed about her creativity being quashed, but I was outraged. What harm did it do for this little girl's art project to be different from the other's kids? So maybe it wasn't perfectly in line with the directions, and maybe it didn't look uniform compared to the other kids, but so what? When the teacher walked away I told the girl I thought she was very creative & that I--for one-- liked her project. "Imperfections," are part of what make us human, and expressing creativity makes us human a well. I am thrilled that you want to support a charity that teaches art to kids! There is a time & place for following directions exactly, but there is also a time & place for being creative, and children's imagination can take them anywhere!

I'm surprised at this teacher's attitude! It irritates me to think about what her attitude and words might have done to the child's spirit! A cold blast! It's an ART Project - and I bet the recipient was THRILLED to have been the lucky one to get that child's artwork!! I'm glad that you praised her and encouraged her to think outside the box! She needed that "emotional grooming" - for lack of better words!
When I was teaching, I encouraged the kids to make their own creative choices from the GUIDES I Set Forth! During a Kindergarten class lesson, I did a demonstration and work-along. I showed them a few examples of how to get different looks with different techniques used. We then discussed how some of the children achieved their different styles that were different than what I had showed them. I worked with 4th grade to preschool. A very important time to teach them to be different and creative!
(I was NOT a certified teacher, but an art/craft coordinator for the children in a Mom's Group that expanded into volunteering at my children's private school and preschool when the teacher's found out what I did for the group.)

I remember reading somewhere that the Amish always have a mistake in their quilts to make the point that only God is perfect. My Grandmother and Aunts used to say the same thing in their quilting circle. And their quilts were beautiful. Your points are good for folks to think about and "embrace." Your card is lovely. Oh wait, it has a mistake :) hahahahaha.

I think we can all be pretty had on ourselves as it is and if we do make a 'happy accident ' we can still have a good outcome. I'm always critical of a lot of my cards and although sometimes constructive criticism if helpful for growth I ultimately make my cards the way I make them, with all the flaws of an individual. Sometimes what we view as a mistake is just part of the charm of handmade. Beautiful card BTW and thanks for sharing :-)

This is a beautiful card! I love the layered look and was inspired by the fact that you used the layers and textures over the top to cover the areas you did not like as well. Nice! I admire the fact that you are going to donate money to help children enjoy and study art! I hope that you get a lot of sales so that the donation can be a huge success! A truly worthy cause!!
I, too, feel that children need to start early. I taught art & crafts to several groups/classes when my children were young, and it brought me so much happiness to watch their individual art creations based on what I showed them as a guide - not a rule!
Even though I have not been able to do the following for several years due to my pain/health, I find that Art and Sewing is my Happy Place to be in a Stress-Free Zone. I'm hoping to get back to my creative work soon!
As much as I critique myself, I find that I am not hard on myself when creating new projects - I study and think out my steps. I just figure out what to do to help balance it out and make it better - or - to watch that I remember how I "trapped myself into that spot" and not repeat it.

Like Lydia Fiedler (Understandblue) says, "Perfection is for serial killers." LOL I do strive for perfection, especially in cards I sell or gift, but I know it doesn't always happen, & I try not to beat myself up when it does. Lately, I've found myself saying, "It's good enough," which, for a perfectionist like I am, is kind of shocking! I love how your coloring came out, Sandy. I must admit, I kind of gasped inwardly when you covered up your pretty images with the greeting strip, but I still think it works. Just don't know that I could have done that myself! Thanks so much for sharing, & for your caring and generosity. :)

I appreciate you so much!! I always learn from u. I watch EVERY single video you make and I will admit, it drives me crazy when u go out the lines (I don't mean that negatively, so hear me out LOL). I have never messaged u or talked negative about it bc it happens. Lol. I love EVERYTHING u make. My husband is a HUGE artist and I actually make cards but I get 'hung up' bc I "mess up" and just get frustrated and discouraged. My husband fusses & says I'm too hard on myself and I am too much of a perfectionist when it comes to making things. He has helped me get past some of my OCD ways if that's what u call it but I am so hard on myself it is CRAZY. I would never just message u & point out every error in you or anybody's work bc I do believe art is about relaxing, enjoying, & about the artist. I mentioned all this here bc you brought up imperfections in the video. I love your work & would never put u or anyone down for their art bc everyone is unique in their own way. As for me, I just have a hard time when it comes to making my own artwork. Lol. Thank you for your encouraging words and please keep showing your work. I hope I came across positively. I am not the best at saying what I mean. I hope u understand what I meant. God Bless!!!

The statement 'imperfection is overrated' could not be more true. If we were perfect, what would we strive for in life. Even Jesus was not perfect, and I certainly don't compare myself to him. There are a large group of crafters that post video tutorials who have beautiful, near perfect work, and I applaud them for their ability, weather it came natural or they have to put in thousands of hours to achieve it. But remember, what you see is not the first piece they created. There is likely 12+ previous copies that were discarded and the video footage deleted. And that is ok. Many of them are representing a product so the expectation is different. I would think most of us do not have the time or energy to devote to remaking something over and over again to get everything just right. It's just not that practical. Actually, for the most part, I have stopped watching videos of the 'near perfect' creators. I learn and enjoy the video so much more if I see the mistakes & how they deal with them. To me that is realistic. I can always find something positive to say about the video, even if it is just that I like the colors or the stamp set. I say be proud of your imperfect work because next time you will be just a little better and you will enjoy the process more.
