    The coldest place I've ever skied was in Whistler during a chill at the end of 2021. It dropped to about -22C and was definitely the coldest I've ever experienced. I know it's not that cold compared to others but it's colder than anything we had ever experienced in Ireland 😂

    The coldest I’ve skied in was definitely Whistler around Christmas last year. We had temps around -35 and wind chill all the way to -56 in the alpine!! Had to stop every couple Holundern meters to make sure no one got any frostbite on their nose. Absolutely freezing.

    The coldest I've ever skied were in Åre, Sweden. It hit a -32 C, crazy cold to ski in but a really fun experience. It was super crisp and had a little hole on the left side of the google, it was burning like hell after a few minutes. Went to ride a snow scooter after, when we drove fast it was -63 on the scooter, my thumb almost fell off, crazy but fun!
    The DJI looks awesome btw, GoPro really has a new competitor! Would be awesome to win one to be able to film everything with! :D

    Coldest place was Zugspitze this year at around -18°C I think, my phone died from the cold and only turned back on when we were in the car, my energy drink was a slushy by 1pm and the sight was absolute garbage, we were in a big fat cloud all day long. I could barely see from one pole to the next to not run off the track - which I did once and then had to shovel myself out of 1,5m snow. Luckily the runs there are easy, they don't even have a black, as you probably know. Check the weather forecast, friends!

    About -25C effective wind chill, I think! Are you using FOV Wide or Ultra-Wide for these helmet shots? And would you recommend filming vertically for social media, or should I film horizontally with 4:3 and then crop in post? But then it'll max out at 60 FPS.

    • @TheSlipperySlope
      @TheSlipperySlope  Рік тому +1

      I used linear for selfie talking head and ultra wide for skiing.
      Definitely vertically. When you use the cage that comes with it you can easily switch from vertical to horizontal or vice versa as you can clip in in two spots.

    Love the video, always wanted to see the comparison of the US vs EU slope ratings from an EU skiier.
    The coldest conditions I have skiied in, was about -20°C on Podkoren/Kranjska Gora some 10 years ago.

    • @elaboratelymcc9038
      @elaboratelymcc9038 Рік тому

      is the skiing generally harder than this in the EU?

    • @nejcmirtic529
      @nejcmirtic529 Рік тому

      @@elaboratelymcc9038 Sadly haven't had a chance to ski in the US myself, but from what I have seen EU resorts are mainly focused on groomed runs, while in the US there is a lot more runs that are not groomed but still count as a run in the resort. A very important part in that plays the average yearly snowfall. Most of the resorts in the EU only get about 2-3m (80-120") of yearly snowfall only the best located resorts get more than 4m (160") of snow, but there are also a lot of resorts that get less than 2m or 80 inches of natural snow, which means that most of the resorts use snow canons to make artificial snow, which is very harsh and icy to ski on most of the time. Therefore I think it is very hard to make a fair comparison to make sure we are not comparing apples and oranges.
      I think that the main difference would be, that because of that focus on groomed runs in Europe, we usually have runs that are steeper with more difficult conditions like having black ice on the whole run or very variable snow conditions (from black ice, to very soft snow and crud and everything in between), that claim is based on what I experienced in almost every resort I went skiing in the EU (France, Italy, Austria, Slovenia, sadly no Switzerland).
      In general a run to qualify as black at least some part has to have the inclination gradient of more than 40% (22°) usually they are closer to 50-60% and one of extreme example would be the Kitzbuhel Streif, which has 82% gradient (aka 40°).
      And I think the main reason for that is, the type of terrain that the Alps offer is so much different, a lot more jagged/cliff like and avalanche safety/danger is a lot more present because of that. So to provide for safe skiing they just decided to set routes that they can control and clear regularly.
      For example, the slope I mentioned above and the one I have the most experience with (Podkoren, Kranjska Gora) which is part of the FIS skiing competition calendar, has a max inclination profile of 59% and a minimum of 21% with most of the run being in the 40-45%. And most of the year it is black ice, because they usually organise ski competitions and training sessions so it needs to be well prepared. Because I have been skiing on conditions like for most of my life, I find it easy to ski and love to to high intensity 50+MPH runs, but by no means it is a simple run to ski on, even with lots of experience, you have to take it seriously and keep pushing throughout the entire run, due to the icy conditions. And almost every resort I know of, has at least one black run like that, maybe a bit mellower on average, but it has at least something like a 200m segment of 40% or more.
      I for sure would find a Colbert's Couloir run difficult having never skied a feature like that, but having some backcountry skiing experience everything after the entrance would be ok. Most of the groomed Black Diamond and Double Black Diamond runs I have seen, seem more like a red in EU but again have not skied in the US and due to the GoPro effect it is very difficult to judge how steep it actually is. But there are difficult black runs in the US too, for example, the Aspen Downhill course has max grade of 55% and a minimum of 12% and an average being 30%.

    • @elaboratelymcc9038
      @elaboratelymcc9038 Рік тому +1

      @@nejcmirtic529 Ah okay thanks. Based on your descriptions I think the blacks in the US are easier than in the EU but the harder double blacks in the US are more comparable to back country in europe and harder than european blacks

    Whistler was the ski resort which clubbed to death 200 unwanted Alaskan Husky dogsled dogs after the Winter Olympics when there was no longer need for them to haul around tourists. They could have given the trained sled dogs to indigenous native Indian tribes people but didn’t. So don’t visit the appalling ski resort.

    There is only one winner here and it is Saanen, just outside Gstaad. Went there several times for ski races with my daughter and every single time I froze my ass off. Temps were only -16 or -17 but at the bottom of the race slope, standing in ski boots, waiting for 120 kids to finish racing, with no shelter, I can guarantee hypothermia was a proper concern. Had to go back to the car a few times as my hands had turned into blocks of wood, my feet into lumps of concrete.

    Hey buddy loving the content and Austrian humour over in North America!
    Coldest skiing I’ve experienced was Sugarloaf, ME back in college days when we were eager beavers and decided to drive up the hour from Waterville when it was -25F and high winds making it -50 or so with wind chill. Needless to say a few friends had pre frostbite on cheeks after bombing a few ice skating runs down from the peak.
    Second place was driving 38 hrs straight from Mass to Jackson Hole to make it for millennium New Years in 2000. Rolled up 5hrs before New Years and passed out missing New Years! left boots in the car and woke up to -10 F and went out any how in frozen boots. At least they were stiff, probably 160 rating being solid ice hehe!

    Coldest temperature or what felt the coldest? The latter is the dumbest: ski hall in Landgraaf (Netherlands). After a day in there you just get cold to the bones.

    The coldest i remember must have been in Stubai at like -25 ish C a couple of years ago. actually was not too bad when you were on the move since there was so little wind. even tho we ended up going for some beers instead after a couple of runs haha.
