      It had to do with guidelines not laws... given in 2011. Obviously she's against sexual assault and discrimination against women and men both, she's just not sure whether she should approve of the guidelines offered. Idk the guidelines, so I can't say for myself whether they are good. Any guideline, that isn't the equivalent of common core for guidelines but for sexual assault, that say sexual assault is wrong is good to me.

    Why do we keep talking so much about low-income students and school choice? Isn't Trump supposed to be the champion of rural America? Let me tell you something about my little piece of rural America. I live in a town of 40,000 people with a median income of about $30,000. There is one high school. If you don't like that school, it's a 20 mile drive to the next school. The nearest charter school is 400 miles away. Our high school is among those that are "failing," but closing this high school would displace students in a 40-50 mile radius. Our population and our local tax revenue can barely upkeep our one high school, let alone establish another for the sake of choice. Choice is not the issue. More schools, new schools, different schools are not the answer. We have to look at our current schools and improve those schools with more funding, more professional development, and more teacher empowerment. Why aren't we talking about how we will achieve those goals? The reforms that Mrs. DeVos supports will do nothing to actually improve or increase the educational opportunities that students in my little town, and students in 1000s of other towns like it, will have.

      This isn't about choice. It never was. Getting a voucher system allows the rich to drain more money from the public school budget. Devos knows that the children of regular Americans have only one option. you are in the same boat as almost 90% of Americans. What a voucher system would mean is basically a 10% off coupon for the rich to send their little shits to private and religious based schools. The tuition for these schools can run $20K or more per semester. So they already know you can't afford that. Most Americans can't afford that. So the voucher for you and me is only good for one school. The public school that your kids already go to. Only now there will be less money for the public schools since about 10-15% will be funneled into private, rich-only schools.

    • @kmasse81
      @kmasse81 7 років тому +1

      J Smith Yes, and don't forget the draining of funds starts the domino effect of cutting staff, specialists, and ultimately closing schools. This leads to more Americans dissatisfaction with the PES and helps the republicans push for more charters ("choices"), vouchers and privatization.
      Noam Chomsky describes what is happening in the new Netflix documentary Requiem For The American Dream. Americans no longer get rich from production. The uber rich are making money from consumerism schools are already another thing we allow them to profit from.

      magichwoo she won't. Your kids go to public schools. Her entire adult life has been fighting to take money out of the public school system and put it in private schools, that don't even live up to the federal standards (which by the way is pretty low). She doesn't care about kids in public schools, or kids who don't have the money for college education. She cares about kids in private schools and also wants to bring religion, which is and always should be a personal choice, back into every school. She will be detrimental to the future of our country (our children).

      because her family can profit from schools that don't follow a specific curriculum or offer anything that benefits society by receiving federal funding. As well as set up positions that she can appoint friends and family to as well. Not saying that's what she is doing, but motives do exist. Charter School have fewer rules, that is correct. The one my daughter attended in Florida had no library, no play ground, no services for the disabled, and a principal who made more money in an elementary school than the president of the University of South Florida ($250K+). Charter means "for profit" and the profit comes from state and federal money and the schools cut every corner to make a profit at the expense of student's education.

Meanwhile charter teachers are generally financially disempowered with lower salaries and benefits and no union. This is one of the hundreds of ways the ruling minority stays in power and rigs the system. I note "attended" is past tense.

It is very important that she's seen first hand how to handle large amounts of money and dealt with the people who want to bid that money in their direction. It is important because the money will indirectly go into businesses, and if she can't foresee the flow of currency at that level she can invest wrongly, although on the surface it would appear impartial, and lead into financial abuse or fraud.

As Tim Kaine said, should I have to move across the country every few years just to find the states that are willing to treat her just like every other child? That's ridiculous. Yes, she is different. Yes, she needs a lot of extra assistance. Does that mean she deserves less than every other kid? No! And this is not the way of thinking for states like Texas.

      Erica Iles - First, I want to say that I am sorry your daughter is having problems in her school with them following the guidelines and providing the help she needs. My son is autistic as well, level 1 without verbal impairment; I've had some issues with the schools here in virginia surrounding my son as well... The best thing I have done/ learned to do, is to go to the school system superintendent. I've had to make alot of noise with them over a few things. Earlier this year my son ( 8yrs) was playing and went to playfully scare another child who was younger than him, instead of them simply explaining " you keep your hands to yourself, that is the rule of the school, and that is the rule of society " ( think Sheldon Cooper, we have to explain social behavior as social law) .... instead they chastised him, telling him that his hands being on the lowest part of her ribs was him touching her in her privates; because one day 30 years from now ( she's like 5 ) her breasts may be there... I was sooo beyond pissed. they said this to him in front of the girl, so not only did they make him feel as if he had violated her by touching a private place ( not really a private place, at least not yet) , they victimized the girl by stigmatizing his playful " boo " right in front of her... the worst thing was a teacher actually watched the incident, and it was an innocent play.... not some kind of sexual behavior as it was turned into... I immediately told his phsyciatrist who was livid, he told me to inform the school that per his words, they are to call me immediately if at any point Charlie does something they see as inappropriate.... another child with autism that I know had a meltdown and the school tried to give her in school suspension for it... her dad went off on them! and rightfully so... again I'm sorry you have had problems with your daughters school. and I hope this at the very least helps you to feel not so alone in this... I dealt with mistreatment in elementary school due to my disability , and it gave me such a bad taste in the mouth about school that I shut down completely.. was held back in 4th grade for being hospitalized for epilepsy, so I refused to do the work a second time... then the principle refused to feed me any food unless I did the school work, she also gave me my MEDS without the food I was required to eat with... my mom didn't believe me until one day the principle admitted it....
      after that, I failed every class until college... I dropped out at 17... ( arrested for a seizure at school at 15 years old )... got into college and now hold a overall GPA of 3.9.... I refuse to let the school give my kids a bad taste for school... keep fighting them. take it as high as you can if you need to. stomp and make some noise!!!
      you should have seen me when the school was trying to force my autistic son to use the new common core math when it is too abstract and put him into a full on meltdown ( again Sheldon cooper shrunk down)
      I told them that as long as he was getting the correct awnser to leave him alone on how... ( 8 years old and does algebra for fun)

      If the school is not meeting the things that are set forth in your students IEP then they are breaking the law. You need to speak with the Principal directly. As a public educator in Texas, I take offense to this comment. I have worked at 5 different Texas campuses and I and my colleagues I have worked with bend over backwards for students with special needs. Sounds like you need to fight harder for your kid and be more involved in her education.

    • @sandyjohnson925
      @sandyjohnson925 7 років тому +3

      "Be more involved" are the key words. Not trying to be an ass, but a teacher has 20-something kids to teach, and would be hard pressed to be a private instructor to "any" one child. I've seen a lot of parents that want teachers to do it all, while thinking they have no responsibility to help in their child's education. Get a tutor if you have to...but don't expect the teacher to do in a few hours what you haven't been able to do in years.

      Many politicians send students to private schools. Those are different than charter schools. If you want to spend your own money to send your child to a private school rather than a public school, then that's your choice. However, what many do not understand is that school distracts pay to send children out of district to charter schools. So for every student they are required to pay for to go out of district, that money is taken away from the students who still attend their school.

    They all talk about funding. "We need more money for our poor students." Listen: I have taught in three states. I have seen loads of tax dollars pissed away by schools because if they don't spend it now, they won't get it next year. We don't need more money! We need students coming to school to improve their education on a daily basis. In order to get that, we need families and communities who value the education they get in schools. All the teachers I know would take that over more money eight days a week.

      Here's my thing. I am all for having options for schooling. I believe each child has different needs and they deserve to have a choice. However, both places should have certain standards that they have to meet that fall in line with laws. Charter schools shouldn't be able to evade laws, just like public schools shouldn't. Also, these schools already receive unequal funding. By using property taxes to pay for public schools, students who come from poorer areas are already at a disadvantage. I think that there needs to be more effort to fix the schools that are already in the communities as well as hire qualified teachers. The education that students received 30, 20, even 10 years ago is not the same. Like every other field, education is always changing and because of this, children deserve teachers that are not only current with theories and practices but also qualified to teach. Being poor shouldn't define the type of education that a student should receive and schools should not be allowed to discriminate against students just because of their socioeconomic status, race, religion or disability.

He cites precedent as a defense for not changing the hearing format but precedents such as releasing tax returns or completing the vetting process before holding the hearing. If he doesn't want to change the rules to give more time for questioning then he can just say so without pretending that precedent is his reason. He does what he wants and cares not for continuity of procedure.

    • @timtrewyn453
      @timtrewyn453 7 років тому

      I don't support her appointment. But there is a justice issue here. If a religious group adopts accepted standards for an accredited education, and they manage their costs in a manner that provides accessibility to all, then they are reducing the student capacity the public system is required to support, yet they, the religious school parents, are still paying public school taxes (and rightfully, those of us whose children are past school still have a compelling interest in paying for public education). This is a financial hardship on the religious school parent. On the other hand, it's very fair of the public school system to insist that it not be placed in a disadvantaged, last resort position. Choice of schools in a given locality requires, necessitates, excess capacity in both private and public systems to make choice even possible. This overcapacity is expensive. It's like two water and sewer systems side by side in same town. From a physical facility standpoint, even a transportation standpoint, it would seem more efficient to allow religious electives in public schools, akin to chapel programs on stateside military bases or chapels in publicly accessible hospitals. No, you can't open secular classes with prayer as is done at religious schools, but there is somewhere for you to pray and fellowship if you so choose. A lot of religious parents might countenance their children attending public schools if there were the kind of religious options, made available to our military and people in hospitals open to the public. This was the case in some areas of earlier America. Somehow the courts make a distinction between the standing of adults and that of minors on this issue. We don't have the billions of dollars it would take to create the excess capacity throughout the nation that would give the public the kind of choice being touted by Mrs. DeVos, "Choice" really seems to be more public relations messaging to distract from the privatizing and profit-taking agenda of an elite that has so much money it has become necessary for them to look under every possible rock for the next increase in their wealth. Mrs. DeVos does not appear ready to sell all she has, give to the poor, and follow Jesus to the Department of Education, where she then would need the salary it pays. I hope she goes away sad, pondering why she's not ready to do that.

    • @vertabrate1
      @vertabrate1 7 років тому +1

      Tim Trewyn true but there is a couple of thorny issues here. 1 i don't like the idea of people pushing religious schools simply to teach kids "alternative knowledge like the earth is 6000 years old or that the constitution was divinely inspired or completely cutting out sex ed. i feel thats the real motivation behind her push for charter schools. 2 as i said with the religious aspect of these schools, you must grant vouchers to any accredited religious school regardless of the religion. this includes schools that may cater to MUSLIMS. i don't have any thing against them but i cant see the republicans going along with this program if Muslim schools are included. this would be a situation where a fault in their resolve to uphold the first amendment would appear. in fact i believe reading a couple of years ago that a very similar program was proposed in Alabama and when it was found out that this would cover a Muslim school they scrapped it.

    I find myself agreeing with Senator Scott about the value that technical colleges provide. I went to technical school for graphic design before I received my BA, and it was a great experience. You learn a practical skill that you can use right out of school. During my education there I spent almost every class period doing hands-on work and learning from people who actually DO the things they taught us.
    Speaking as one whose path didn't follow the "typical" post-high school path of four-year college (I joined the Army instead, and didn't start my college education until after I was married and had kids), I think our nation does a disservice to our students by promoting four-year degrees at the expense of other paths. It almost seems like a class separation. I do wish our education system spent more effort on educating students about their options for career paths, including educating them on the values of waiting until they know themselves better before making such a huge financial investment as a college education.

She clearly has a heart for students and parents and their ability to get the best possible education for their children, regardless of income. She's not about protecting a system of protection of inadequate teachers, but in fact I believe she will champion those teachers who, as she said in her opening remarks ' pour themselves into education of our students' in all forms of education choice, be it public schools, which includes charter schools, privates schools, home school or online schools.

    regarding the whole sexual assault issue.. the guy doing the questioning wants devos to support his BILL, its NOT about supporting sexual assault prevention.. its about supporting a specific piece of legislation.. all she is saying is.. im not going to commit to anything right here right now. she wants to make sure that ALL rights are preserved and that the bill makes sense. if she were a democrat.. she'd be praised fort that stance..and those that criticize would be considered "right wing" and "sexist".

    My brother struggles with dyslexia, the public schools could not provide him with the proper education. He was in middle school and could still not formulate sentences correctly. Luckily my parents could manage to scrape up 16,000 a year -that was with a scholarship- for him to go to a specialized school so he could learn how to read and write.

    Damn the reps were wasting most of their time butt kissing and theirs seemed to be the only questions she actually answered the rest was evasion and maybe purposeful 'misunderstanding'. I truly believe that BEFORE these hearings take place all the paperwork should be in so the people can actually hear about any conflict of interests or ethical problems.

    I'm honestly kind of pissed off by how the Democrats are asking actual, critical questions and the Republicans basically waste their time to fakely praise her, ramble, or present shitty and vague questions that wouldn't force her to commit to anything. I'm a liberal and this disgusts me. I pray to all the deities she doesn't make it.

    Making sure that the banks get their money is Senator Hatch's concern. My single mom daughter is now 30K in debt, without graduating with a degree from a online education. She works in retail making less than 30k. It is pathetic how we indebt our children before they even begin a career. Higher ED is predatory as well.
    Great country right? Education is free in Europe. Yet, that is right. You can tell who is concerned about getting their "profits" off of education. Just listen to the questions asked, Sen. Hatch.

    This woman barely has any qualifications to even be trying to get in this position. As a public high school student this concerns me. Our school system already Isn't great, do I appreciate the opportunity to get an education? Absolutely. But if someone like this is going to be in charge of what my education is going to be like I'm honestly scared and worried. This will directly effect me and my future

    First thing you need to know about me, I am an industrial engineer:
    I'm trying to be an informed citizen so I'm watching some full cabinet confirmation hearings... what I've learned --> from now on, anytime I'm in an interview - I'm going to answer EVERYTHING in vague generalities:
    Interviewer - So tell me about what you would do to help us get our productivity up and costs down in order to be more cost competitive in the market?
    Me - Well [Interviewer], if selected I would really look forward to working with you to increase productivity and cut costs by building things faster with less waste.
    Interviewer - Ok, but how would you help us do that?
    Me - Well we would work together and in working together I think we could find some common ground to come up with some great solutions to build more efficiently and with out as much waste in the process.
    From what I can tell - this is the formula for success to getting some of the highest positions in the United States. I assume it also works in the private sector?
    What Interview questions will you answer going forward and how?

    1:58:25 The Dover trial was NOT about the adoption of a "biology textbook including intelligent design." The trial was about the FREE availability of an adjunct book on intelligent design in the Dover school library. The litigation of that FREE availability cost the Dover school district A MILLION DOLLARS. If concern over the funding of public schools is foremost, why throw away a million dollars of education funding?

    Remember, who is good no to pay for all of that education base on zip code etc? Those who only can pay for it in their real estate tax bills each year as we are now? This is unacceptable and that's where you congressman and senators need to go back to the drawing table and figure that out.

    I don't know of any school district that pays bonuses. My husband taught for 30 years with a master's degree and 36 credits beyond. He also coached freshman basketball. When he retire 10 years ago he was making about $55,000. A majority of the teachers today must pay for classroom supplies out of their pocket and although they do have some time off over the summer they must continue to take credits to keep their licenses and move up on the pay scale. If these are grad credits they can cost as much as $300/ credit. The teachers in our district have not any kind of a raise in three years and their benefit costs have gone way up. I realize that is true in many jobs, but to say they are overpaid and receive huge bonuses is just not so.

      What would Jesus do? If I remember correctly he went into the temple (a place of religion and foremost teaching) and throw the capitalist merchant out. School and common education should be neutral non-religious and open to everyone. Mrs DeVos tries to push ideas like charter schools that are a failed model ( the only ones that work are the ones that are backed by a millionaire who is willing to make deficits) with the main goal to enrich herself and her friends. So how is she better than those merchants thrown out of the temple by Jesus? Gohan Justice may god bless you and your family, have a nice week full of prosperity and hope.
