Finger Drumming The Police - Can't Stand Losing You on Akai MPD218
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 січ 2018
- Here I demonstrate my finger drumming technique by playing Stewart Copeland's drum part on the Police song "Can't stand losing you" on an Akai MPD218 controller. This is my favourite midi controller together with the Native Instruments Maschine mk3 (some demo's of me playing that device will follow)
My goal with these video's is to demonstrate how you can take your beatmaking to the next level by learning how to play 'real' drums on a midi pad controller.
- All the drum sounds you hear in the video are from the Addictive Drums 2 sample library. Very happy with those.
- The red lights on the left Akai mpd218 are added with adobe after effects to make it more clear which pads I am hitting. So the Akai MPD218 does not light up that way.
- Yes, the backing track seems to be the real Police studio recording, except without the drums. Lot's of drumless backing tracks like these available on the internet if you search thoroughly.
You can find diagrams of all the patterns, the pad layout that I'm using and a lot of free finger drumming courses, finger drumming lessons and finger drumming tutorials on my website.

Most practical demo i've seen. Amazing.
this is insane!!
You are amazing men. You should have millions of Views!! Thank you for you music
at first i thought the rubber button worn down so bad that the light seep through haha.. top job!
Ah no its an effect, converting midi notes to animation. But that was way too much work :-) now with my maschine mk3 the pads just light up and its easier to see so I don't do all this complicated after effects stuff anymore.
Best f drumming I have seen so far :)
Thanks! I teach my 'ways' on this channel and website questforgroove.com ! Without prior drumming experience this took me about 3 years from scratch to this point.
Dude this is INSANE lol
What? This was awesome!
Yes, it's actually possible to play drums like this on a pad controller. Pretty neat right? When I figured out this could be done I felt like I had to share it by demonstrating it and also teaching how to do this. It's very useful in the home studio.
Amazing
Really keeps me motivated with finger drumming
Just the fact to know this level is possible..
Cheers
It is! I taught myself how to do it after first going to music school and learning guitar. So I sort of applied my learning tricks to this. I do think you will need a systematic and consistent approach for a while to make things sound good, but it's totally doable.
Great song, and good drumming by you.
Stewart Copeland is still my favorite :-)
@TQfG
great video, thank you very much indeed.
It has drastically occurred to me how much I still have to learn about finger drumming.
Please keep up the good work.
Holy hell. Love the song. Thanks for playing this.
Brillant !!!!
Awesome 🔥
This is really random, but you should definitely CONSIDER to do a tutorial on how to play this! I love this so much I've wanted to learn it ever since I found your channel.
Yeah it’s some difficult techniques that cannot be explained in a few minutes so if I do a video about this I’ll refer people to my advanced techniques course. I will explain how to do this as soon as I can be sure that I have all the lessons in place for someone who wants to learn :-)
So not “random”.
You are fantastic! The better video about finger drums!!
Thanks! New vids coming soon after I'm done moving to my new house / studio
WOW!! Supercool
bravo! after a lot of years of pure piano study, you inspired me to study rhythm (and try your method)
Awesome! Let me know how things are going and especially let me know if you have questions!
what a nice cover
Wow! that's just great!!!
Thank you! I started this channel and my website questforgroove.com to share this way of playing with the world!
@@TheQuestforGroove I know, I'm following you and getting inspired. Just bought an MPD218 and started practicing...
That's amazing man!! New fan here!
Awesome! Welcome aboard :-)
Good
Sick!!
Thnx!
Wow, I usually feel lethargic after eating fried chicken but it made you find your groove!
👍👏
Very Very GoooD)))
Thank you! Stay tuned for more!
Hey guys, leave a comment below, let me know what you think and maybe come up with some suggestions on what I should do in the future? I've got a lot of cool stuff planned but I would love to hear from you!
The Quest for Groove I’m not sure if you’ve done this or not but a recording workflow guide would be really helpful!
Yeah that's basically the "setup" section of the beginner course on my website.
I'm actually planning on redoing that course to make it even more clear and help people with different pad controllers and different daw's.
I also have a lesson in my Advanced techniques course that explains how to play this. You need to do the technique exercises first because it's impossible otherwise. That's why it seemed appropriate to include this song in that course as some sort of reward at the end.
The Quest for Groove Great, thanks! I’ll be sure to check it out there. Love your playing by the way!
Just found your channel! Exactly what I am trying to find. Found you through the launchpad x vid.
Can you play anything by Warpaint? But if I can request, please play Whiteout. 😅
great job mannnnn:)
your so good;)
Thank you, I'm convinced that with dedicated practice you can achieve the same thing! It takes a couple of years but not forever.
Great. very nice...now i just have to decide between atom or mpd218..and hope the learning curve on playing drums with fingers is smaller than with real drums :-D
It is! Going from 0 to recording this video took 4 years in total. I did have guitar experience, but never played any drums. And I figured all of it out myself without lessons, and now I actually made lessons to help others go faster :-)
Love this! Would like to some funk grooves and some bongo/conga percussion grooves
I'll do a lesson on the funky drummer beat next Thursday (later today I'll post another video) and percussion grooves are a great idea! Will keep that in mind when thinking of new videos to shoot.
@@TheQuestforGroove Congas really are a different thing all together. It's such a different instrument from drums. It would definitely be interesting!
@@mercedesescobarmusic I will get around to it eventually, but I'd have to do some research first:-)
dam dude
Very good.
I start your course.
watta bass wonderful! You'll be my first student so feel free to ask me anything or give me feedback on what I can improve about the lessons!
Hi, I finished the first course for free. I am very happy; it works!
I use an NI Maschine and I have the whole Komplete package. Tomorrow I will start the 6 week course.
As soon as you have news, let me know.
watta bass Will do. I'm posting videos every week. So by the time you're done with the 6 week course you'll have other stuff to do.
I use a maschine mk3 now too. Future videos will be recorded on that one for the most part.
Oh and Komplete Abbey Road drums are great. I like the 70's tight kit. It's very, well tight and clear so you can hear accurately what you're playing and how well your timing is. I recorded the drums on this song with that abbey road 70's tight kit and using my finger drumming technique: open.spotify.com/track/6ayxL5vzr7s2lEEYaaqFaX
Brilliant! My fave drummer as well so that was REALLY inspiring. Question for anyone who cares to chime in; I was thinking about getting an iPad Pro to use as a control surface for Logic but I'm thinking Push 2 is looking pretty cool. Anyone have an opinion on what would be the best option?
I think fingerdrumming on an ipad will not be that nice. But a push 2 plays pretty good actually. Recently played one and I could play all my stuff on it!
Cheers
vubear Take an Akai mpc Live. I recently bought one and these are really awesome! And full standalone!
Really gotta test that one out! Hopefully this summer. Gotta have some money first :-) channel isn't big enough for free testing specimens.
I went for Maschine in the end. Early days but enjoying it so far.
Bravo ! Is there a place where we can download your mpd template?
Thnx! I have an article about the pad layout over here. questforgroove.com/basic-finger-drumming-technique-pad-layout/
Or do you mean the sound of this drumkit? That's the 'Black Oyster' kit from addictive drums I think.
I should start saving the drum mixes I make. I haven't done that so far... keep in mind that even then you need the program I use (addictive drums) and all the kit pieces from different expansion packs. I sometimes use a hihat from one kit and a kick from another, so that can get messy :-)
Great playing! In your opinion, is the AKAI MPD218 better than the NI Machine Mikro MK3 for pad feel and responsiveness?
I would say a mikro mk3 is slightly better!
Thanks for you reply@@TheQuestforGroove
Ehy nice cover man, how do you make this performance? Do you used sample or vst?
Yeah this is just Addictive Drums 2 and me playing on my pad controller. If you're interested in my setup and how to get everything working, just visit questforgroove.com and go through my free beginner course. I explain everything in there and it's accessible to everyone!
Did you modify the MPD (via losening the screws on the bottom) in order to optimize pad travel?
This controller was just good out of the box. Back in the day I bought 5 of them and then returned them all except for this one (because the other ones were not that great)
@@TheQuestforGroove thank you for the quick reply. I am very happy with mine, too, but saw many comments on the internet of users who felt the need to modify the MPD. Great stuff, love what you do! Also interesting how totally different your layout is.
I'm gonna test that out as well soon!
Its really cool play ! I havw question Can i use it with out connecting to a laptop ?
If cant , could you recomand some of stuff for me ? Im looking for the finger drum pad for live looping with out connecting to a laptop
I’ve got akai mpx8 and it was dissapointed me ... because its old stuff and sampling option is dosent working well thats why
Anyway if you have any idea let me know it plz thanks Its really cool play ! I havw question Can i use it with out connecting to a laptop ?

The only option for use without laptop is the Akai MPC live. Very nice device, but big and expensive!
@@TheQuestforGroove I just bought it and waiting foto the arrival. But please answer a question. Can I create a complete song with pads? Ir it is just a drum machine?
There's also options for chords and stuff!
What program do you use?
Addictive Drums 2. Black Oyster kit.
What software do you use
Addictive drums 2 with the "Black Oyster" kit!
I have the AD Oyster kit so am interested in which preset you used for this, if any?
I did sort of build this one myself but I seem to recall it was the black oyster kit. If I still had the presets on my computer I could quickly share them but they're on a 4 year old drive somewhere...
Ah, I remeber something though: You want to enable the "shallow rimshot" sound for that reggae snare sound and you need the 8" splash from the Session percusison kit for that nice splashy reaggae sound.
@@TheQuestforGroove That's brilliant, thanks. I'm a huge Police fan and it would be fun to try and become a Finger-Copeland. Have subbed and signed up for your beginner course. Cheers.
Incidentally, are the Maschine Mikro Mk 1 or 2 and good or is the Mk3 much better?
I couldn't say. My first experience with the maschine controllers was the mk3 versions. I heard from many people that the older ones are good as well, so my guess is they won't suck or anything.
Can you recommend this pad controller for that price range?
I'm not sure... some mpd 218s are great, other ones are not. I managed to make certain pads better by opening it up and applying tape on the inside but it was a bit tricky and could have gone wrong so I'm still debating whether I should recommend this controller only to people who are willing to mess around with it even if it breaks... one thing you can try is to buy one and make sure you can return it. Don't open it obviously, just try out the pads and if they're not responsive send it back right away.
@@TheQuestforGroove Thank you. I had the akai mpk mini before, the pad was great. I didn't know that they are making better pads in a midi keyboard than in a pad controller itself.
Yeah... i don't understand either.
@@TheQuestforGroove I have decided to go buy Maschine Mikro MK3 but I can't find any video of you fingerdrumming with it. Is it not ideal to use mikro as fdrumming especially swing and reggae style?
How do you set that open close hihat?
In Addictive drums this goes automatically. Hitting a closed hi hat closes an open hi hat if it is ringing.
I have a stupid question - how do you get the song without original drums? Or you just filter those drums out?
Usually you can "find" them on the internet by searching "drumless version" for example. Another place is remixpacks.ru (I believe) where you can also sometimes find the stems of the songs. And then you can turn off the drums!
@@TheQuestforGroove thanks so much, I also use some app, but the quality isn't that good
Can you play ghost note with this?
Yes. But you need something like Addictive Drums (that's the plugin I use here) and a good controller and the MPD218 is not always great. Nowadays I recommend people use Maschine micro mk3 or something like that. Ghost notes will sound very good and realistic.
@@TheQuestforGroove Can i use maschine mikro with garageband iOS? or is it only for windows?, thanks for the reply man!!
where did you get the stems?
I got them either from a website called "drumlesstracks" or another one called remixpack .ru. Shady places to say the least l :-) but great for getting your hands on real practice tracks!
@@TheQuestforGroove I was aware of remixpack.ru but not the other. regarding a thing begin "shady", my operating m.o. is "I reserve the right to infringe upon your copy." : ) Thanks for the info. Great technique. You should challenge Stewart Copeland to a beat battle. lol.
Haha, Stewart Copeland seems like a fun guy. Would love to hear what he thinks. My guess is he'll either love it or completely hate this way of drumming :-)
@@TheQuestforGroove you know, I think he would probably dig it. some years back, he did a track with the tap dancer Gregory Hines. It was just him on drums with Hines tap dancing; the tap being recorded as a percussive instrument. check it out. i'm sure its here on the youtubes.
Hi, velocity response is good enough on this pads?. I have a NanoPad2 and there's no way to play soft like ghost notes or something like that, even setting lowest velocity. Is this Akai better than Korg?.
Thanks.
Hey thats a long story! I suggest you read this article i wrote and maybe watch the videos I mention there. questforgroove.com/gear-recommendations/
dead mpd 218 please give me standard midi in and out and a foot switch instead of the useless software bundle
