HOW TO AD LIB ON ANY SONG! In this tutorial we tackle the topic of ad libbing with 4 simple rules that will take any melody from bland and boring to super cool! Try practicing along with the video, pausing after each section to work on perfecting each rule.
RULE #1: Change the dynamics & articulations.
RULE #2: Change the rhythm.
RULE #3: Repeat a note.
RULE #4: Add a different note.

Wonderful videos. I should really say you teach very well, understanding of the subject is simplified by real playing examples. Finally there is no much diversion in the subject topic like else other you tube video educators do. Keep up this good way, certainly it will benefit the learners and you in particular in the long run.

Love it! I've been doing the first 3 tips since I first picked up the sax, with reasonable success, but the 4th one has long eluded me. I do it, but more often than not it results in a fail. This was a good intro for me to step into it more confidently.

Wow Scott. You have the gift of explaining things from the listener point of view, so people can understand it without any mind algebra. Not like teachers using all these technical terms and run around words and at the end you know less than when he started.
First time I asked some guy to explain to me how I could start learning jazz improv, the guy came out with, "it´s something that comes out of my psyche and like some kind of god thing and it´s very difficult to explain and so on". The prick...

This is very good stuff. I have practiced quite a few now and it works in all cases. Next up from you should be how to move around a chord progression eg C7 to F to Bb. I find that very difficult

How to decide when and where to ad lib? When and where it feels right to the musician? In other words should one think about when and where beforehand or while one is playing? Is there any "right" way to ad lib (other than one's personal taste). Thanks for the great lesson.

Some songs are easy for me to improvise on. Others, not so much. I wonder why that is. Because I am mostly illiterate musically, when I blow a good solo it's a happy accident. I am beginning to see how a good improvisation can be intentional and not just an accident. I have a suggestion for you Scott. How about doing a clip about how to back up a singer with a sax- how to accent the singer and not play over her/him. Thanks again Scott.
Hey David that probably comes down to the chord progressions. Some hover around the 1 chord which will make playing one scale sound good. Some go all over the place and if you stay in one key it won't sound good.

Get the melody under your fingers really well before adding in all the other stuff.
Ha Scott your video on C7+9s cords why is the cord of B7+9 played like this in my backing track book as B D# G. A. D
Isn’t B7+9. B D# F#. Bb??? What am I missing. Tom
B7+9 that is another part of the informal part of writing chord symbols. In the case of that book they are using the + meaning augmented, which means to raise the 5th. So the chord is actually: B D# F## (double sharp) A C#. In regards, to your other question (and this one). These are all different ways of writing the same thing: C9 / C7+9 /C(9) The plus sign or brackets mean add this note or make this change. So you might see B-7(b5) or B-7(b9). That is the hardest part about reading chord symbols is there is no one standard, every composer has his/her preferences.

Thanks! I'm starting on a B and doing a turn and going chromatic to the A (B C B Bb A) then doing the same same thing starting on an E (E F E D# D). Hope that helps.
