This movie went a little bit above what I expected for an adaptation of a musical that means to me! All this work going deeper into the story and characters is one of few reasons why.
I'm just curious how this broadway show/film got its "queer" reputation. The witches and the prince they're both in love with are all straight characters. And yet, there's a small crowd that seems to think that the witches are secretly having a lesbian relationship with each other. I didn't see it that way at all. They are just two close friends that I see in female friendships all the time. I suspect the book probably had a different angle, but some people are definitely misreading it in the film. Musicals like Rent have a definite focus on queer relationships. Wicked is more about straight relationships that gets misinterpreted as gay by some.
Perfect movie. Give them all the Oscars. They deserve it.
