The tip that helped me distinguish cravings was that when you’re hungry you just want food, but craving are specific. Thanks for the awesome episode!

Your guys videos and podcasts have changed my life. In the last 12 weeks I have lost 25 pounds and only 5 lb of that has been muscle. I have been tracking my caloric intake and focusing on protein. I really loved it when you said a less-than-optimal but consistent workout is better than the perfect workout every once in awhile. I get in some sort of calisthenics everyday and I'm starting to transition into more gym style workouts. Thank you guys!

Watching this 2 years later but this is such a valuable podcast. It's basically what I went to therapy for 2 years to learn. This is a cognitive behavioral therapy approach to dealing with cravings and impulsive behavior. The quality of your content is truly impressive and so helpful.

Hey guys, I haven’t been watching your show and shorter videos for that long now, but ai immediately connected to all of your content. After I separated from the Army, my weight got out of control along with chronic ailments from my service. The only thing that helped has been nutrition and resistance training, however I can never seem to get anything consistently right, so I always end up yo-yo dieting and training. Not only has your fitness advice been incredibly helpful, but each of your moral mindsets and deeper thought processes has really helped me when struggling with fitness, food, or life in general. I’m just now starting to treat my own body as a science experiment to truly understand how it functions. Thanks for all you do.

Guys I really needed this! My Achilles heel to fitness is my relationship with food. I can't seem to win yhe mental battle with food and no matter how much I listen to you guys I can't seem to break my habits and cravings. There seems to be a mental block and when you speak about getting stuck in a cycle, that's me. Work up too much stress so I stress eat which leads me to stress about eating. I need to break this stress cycle and the cravings I have should be included in that too. I am old fashioned enough to enjoy writing vs typing so I'm going to start writing about my stresses and my cravings. The mental aspect of health has become a problem for me but I'm going to use this information to help change that! Thanks for being life changing for people like me!

hey guys, just wanted to say thank you for making my hour long commute actually ... enjoyable. I work for a nutrition company and my nearest location had to close it's doors, leaving my only other option to continue working with the company to include an hour commute north (i'm in jersey and parkway north/south traffic SUCKS lol). I nearly quit because the commute alone was dreadful, BUT I cannot relay this message enough ... I get excited for it now because it's my "Mind Pump time". You guys make me laugh, learn and feel relief while I commute. I've always listened to y'all, but it now feels like I'm literally friends with each of you (in the most not weird way - lol). Can't thank you enough for everything.

I absolutely LOVE this podcast. I listen to fun & gains with Brittany lupton and sal was a guest on her show this week. I quickly came over to this podcast and have been listening nonstop. Although I am a brand new listener- I absolutely love the content these guys share. I am so happy to have found a place to get dependable fitness information, as this industry is so sadly filled with misinformation. I am an avid cross fitter but listening to the content shared, I am real interested to try some of their programming and see how it can make a difference for me and my personal goals. In just a short 24 hours of being a listener I already have entirely new goals with my nutrition and style of fitness. I can’t thank y’all enough for educating us! Much much much love to you all!!!

A little bit of a different transformation, but I wanted to let you guys know that the Arthur Brooks happiness episode really has impacted me in the best way. My boyfriend and I had been on rocky terms, and I was convinced that maybe we were just too different, and too much in different places of our lives. The part about how you approach your life really helped me see how I was sabotaging things between us. When Arthur talked about approaching things through a limbic system, amygdala focused approach versus a prefrontal cortex approach, but put it in terms of thinking and approaching with love, it finally clicked for me. I could justify saying that I was in a bad mood, or he did something to piss me off and that’s why unprompted, I talk to him rudely and got irritated easily. But when I reframed it in the sense of I was speaking to him in that way because of deep insecurities or anxiety that I was letting bleed over into our interactions that had nothing to do with the issue I was concerned about, I realized a good majority of it was me. And that’s humbling, but now the exercise I do when I approach him with something is “am I saying this out of love or out of fear, am I bringing this up out of love or out of fear, am I meeting him with love or with fear”. I have noticed I’ve gotten better at this concept with my life, regarding work and goals I have, not being scared to go after them. But having a childhood where my father was emotionally abusive or distant or dismissive, even manipulative, romantic interactions seem to be where I left it inside. Thank you so much for that episode, it really has changed my life.

Some of my go-to habits for curbing or handling cravings:
    1. Parse out your snacks. I enjoy measuring out a serving (using a food scale) and bagging just that for my "indulgent" lunch snack, especially chips.
    2. When snacking on junk food, I'll sometimes intersperse healthy snacks like carrots between bites.
    3. Popcorn. I eat lots of popcorn and if I add butter, it's very little. Popcorn is super low calorie, light on the stomach, but can be very satisfying.
    4. Eating sweet and salty together. This tends to satisfy cravings much faster.
I can go on and on, but the MP team already gives you a bunch of great suggestions. Still, I hope these help whoever might stumble upon them!
Also, I'm super active and generally eat pretty healthy, so I feel I have a little leeway when it comes to cravings. I'll indulge from time-to-time in a piece of chocolate or other sweet or a serving of chips. But I acknowledge it and don't go crazy, eating a whole bag or a dozen cookies or anything like that.

You guys are spot on with this episode....... as always! One of the best things I ever did to battle cravings was to face them head on through prolonged fasting. I will often do a 36 to 48 hour fast and during that time I come face to face with my impulses. Coming out of a successful fast is so empowering, not only on the nutritional front but in so many other areas of life. Thank you guys for looking out for the complete person.

what has helped me determine if I'm hungry/low on a nutrient - vs - a craving is to identify what I'm wanting. For example, if it's something sweet, then any alternative like an apple or banana will satisfy my needs. But if it's something specific like a Mars bar... then I know it's a craving. How I manage that then is to make it a reward (not a punishment!) - what i'll do, is if i really want the Mars bar, I can have it after a run or 50 pushups... then it's a reward for the effort. And it helps, because sometimes I won't want it after the workout.

Crunchy nut cornflakes being the flavour of last week, giving me euphoric recall of my stoner days. If i start feeling run down or like I'm going to catch a cold.... here comes the cravings!!..give me all the taco bell, cereal, pizza 🍕 and donuts 🍩 ..
Also, if my scheduled day is thrown way off plan.. my anxiety skyrockets.

    Hey guys, great episode!
Hunger and Cravings (compensations) are different things, but the fact that while fasting we can survive and we have less hunger is because of hormonal adaptation, and it's not necessarily optimal.
If we skip lunch, that's hunger, and in that short period, we indeed have catabolism (that's not necessarily bad).

I think my biggest problem is cravings. I know that’s what’s holding me back with losing fat but it’s hard to not give in. Thanks for these tips tho, I’m going to try them and try to achieve better results!

I enjoyed the video, also the mention of not eating while watching tv, phone or whatever. As I sit here, eating, while watching this. Damn!

Just what I needed to hear. I drive around all day for my job and I want to eat every time I get in the truck. Now you have me thinking about why I want to. Super helpful! Also are sunflower seeds a good snack? And any tips on how to deal with post acl reconstruction surgery?

I never keep sweets etc at home, because I would eat nothing else until they´re gone. If I want some I can go buy some. I attribute that behavior to growing up with siblings, you gotta be fast to snatch you´re fav´s

For myself when I’m working out consistently it’s easier for me to resist the cravings and such. I think of how much work I’ve put in and I hate to feel like I’ve wasted all this time and effort for some stupid craving of some sweet dessert or something. Not that I completely eliminate things. When I’m not consistent I don’t care as much.

I learned to compromise. I loved sugar for a long time and found protein bars that are like candy bars and it takes away my cravings while keeping me on goal.

For me it’s the exact opposite. I struggle to eat, and I always have. Sometimes even my favorite foods will make me gage. It is just as much a struggle to deal with this kind of eating disorder than a food addiction.
Working out is the only thing that has helped me. It makes me hungry, but on top of that I’m conscious that I have to eat, and it forces me to eat even when I don’t want to.
I’m wondering if you guys have ever worked with people that have this particular disorder, and how did you help them to overcome it?
