  • In this video I finally get to start building the frame. I go over some of the basics and show how the Bend Tech software takes the parts from the computer to the real world.

      No problems there. Your thought processes come through. It gives other builders a clear pictures of the issues faced and how to prevent and solve them. Good tips on the right angle squares etc. Level jig. Also, seems like you are so far impressed with the software cut angles. They look pretty tight! That's going to help with a stronger and accurate frame. You have me wanting to buy the software!

      Next couple videos will really highlight the software and how easy or difficult it is to work with. But so far so good. If you do get the software remember I'll share any of my files with you or anyone for that matter. You could literally build anything that I build with it.

    I built my build table higher (4ft) and on casters. This let me drive my other car under the front of it. Saved me from having to lift and move it.

      That's a good idea. Right now mine is about 12" off the ground. It would be easier to work on if it is was about 24-36" at this point. Although I figure as the frame gets taller it might get easier.

      Ahhh, thank you for sharing that. I love when I get to see other peoples work. Looks like a cool chassis. I like the fact that you were able to design the chassis around the engine. After you cut the cope, do you chamfer the edge? Or do you chamfer down to the paper? Thanks for the extremely informative information, I'm gathering my supplies and hope to start soon!

    • @DougBugBuilder
      @DougBugBuilder  6 років тому +1

      First I grind it down flush to the paper which puts me right to where the software wants the cut to be. Then I chamfer it for good welding penetration. When I chamfer it I'm beveling the edge, but not all the way as to where it will change the cope. I hope that makes sense??

    Is there any downside to building the frame from the square tube, rather than round? I know that round is stronger, but the square is easier and flatter

    • @DougBugBuilder
      @DougBugBuilder  5 років тому

      The square is a lot easier to start the chassis where the body will connect to it and the floor. That's how I did the chassis I'm running on the Baja right now.
      But on this chassis the square tube you see is only part of the jig. The entire chassis you see here will be made out of round tube.

    Doug sorry, I know this post was 2 years ago but I'm trying to start from the beginning. Can you tell me please, the templates from the bend tech software you are using, dumb question but what do you uses to secure the template to the tube so it doesn't move, and so it is easy to remove when finished with? Thanks

    • @DougBugBuilder
      @DougBugBuilder  3 роки тому +1

      I use scotch tape. Scotch tape is good because you can see through it. Little tough to remove sometimes, but not bad.
      I usually tape the templates around themselves so you can slide them around the tubes. Then when it's in position a little tape to hold it to the tube.

    • @DougBugBuilder
      @DougBugBuilder  6 років тому

      No, most of what you are seeing there is the Jig. When the frame is done I'll separate it from the Jig and it won't look so "Tanky".

  • @joshknight5258
    @joshknight5258 6 років тому

    So why are you doing miter cuts? Why not do bends instead. You’d have less welds and less heat and wouldn’t cut as much.

    • @DougBugBuilder
      @DougBugBuilder  6 років тому +1

      Josh,
      For the base of the chassis I want it to be more accurate. Or I guess what I mean is I don't want to deal with bend radius's. The part of the chassis I'm building at this point is going to have interior and exterior paneling. Having to connect those to rounded corners would be more difficult and I don't think they would look to good. Additionally some of these miters are only a couple degrees, with my bender it's really difficult to bend something under like 20 degrees and have it be accurate. So I thought doing miters would be easier. So far I'm good with this choice.
      You are correct though, going this route I have added some complexity and likely made it a little weaker. All choices I'll have to live with. lol

      This was my initial thought. But also I noticed Doug doesn’t treat his equipment poorly. He’s not building to take 120mph impacts. At the beginning of the video I was in anxiety. Then the reality hit me. I’m used to a bender and high impact risk. This build is totally on par with its function.
