This was Mike Mentzer's first-ever video (produced in 1980), on high-intensity training. In it he outlines its general principles and provides sample exercise programs for beginners and intermediate/advanced trainees.
It’s worth noting that he would refine these programs after he began training clients in the 1990s and discovered that most of his clients could not recover from the volume and intensity even of these comparatively brief workouts.
Nevertheless, this video is a wonderful historical reference to Mike’s thought in an era when he was a competitive bodybuilder. Also worth noting, this was the first bodybuilding training video released to the mass market and opened the door for other bodybuilding instructional videos that would follow from the 1980s through until today.
I have tried to diminish the heavy synthesizer music that dated this video with more contemporary music where applicable.
Mike Mentzer is an Engineer of bodybuilding.
No frills, no filters. Just straight up knowledge & hard work.
damn this mentzer guy sure looks good, hope his olympia doesn't get stolen
😳
Lol
😂😂👏🏽
He trained Dorian Yates, u know nothing POS
Stolen twice. But at least he had two perfect 300 scores. And left a great legacy for us mere mortals to improve our bodies.
When you think about it , Mike has got to be the most documented bodybuilder ever , all his philosophies on training and diet are recorded . I don't know anyone else who was until Okabe started filming the pros .
Thank you John Balik for the visuals.
I wish there were books written by Ray as he seemed to have knowledge of biomechanics, etc.
A mystery man.
Right. Seemed as if Ray was always in the background.
Very informative. Very much appreciated the specifics regarding exercises and days of the week.
Thank you for this video. Now to watch it 20 more times💪😎🤘
That's gross "overviewing". Only watch 2x to complete viewing failure.

Very honest and we'll spoken person ❤
hello john so i have one question, is the 19:39 in video mike said triceps extensions and you tell in comments that triceps extensions doesn`t work triceps as well as triceps pressdown, so should i make 2 sets of triceps pressdown or 1 set triceps pressdown and 1 set triceps extension? in this program? or should i stick with just triceps pressdown? thank you john and please answer i have workout tommorrow want to try thanks!
He told me that triceps pressdowns is much better I don’t know why Mike suggested here triceps extension but it is how John told me about triceps.
Thanks for sharing. 💪
RIP Goat
The true goat ❤
Hello John, I have question can I add rest days 72 hours between workouts in this 4 day Split routine program will it be better? Thank you!
It will all depend upon the information in your training logbook. If you add rest days and your weights and/or repetitions go up, then all is well. This was an early program of Mike's (before he refined his approach to training in the mid 1990s). If you find it works for you (in terms of the volume of the program), that's great as we each have different tolerances for high-intensity exercise.
@@HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE i am confused because i rested 72 hours between my workouts i go up in my reps on everything but on back one exerciese i didn`t go up in rep is pulldown i got same rep as before, so what can you do in this situation? but i increased reps in barbell row and every other exercises on this day :D also on second set of pulldown i increased the reps from 5 to 7 | but in first set of pulldown i got 7-7 as before. thank you john if you can help me!
I don't think the current Olympia guys could do those floor stretches. I could be wrong.
Believe it or not they still do a lot of stretching.
Beast of a man!
Mike Mentzer was built just like me with the exception that he was far superior.
He was built just like me too except the fact that im under 70 kg at 20
can i try this routine? and see how it works? and if i am getting stronger so i am on right track yes? what you will tell me john thanks! and what 2 cycles means 2 sets?
cycle = superset (as in pre-exhaust); if you're getting stronger, then you're good.
@@HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE so when mike saying 2 cycles its means 2 superset yes? after one superset i rest and do another superset so total 2 sets
@@MikeMentzerHD Correct - 2 supersets (2 exercises performed with no rest in between).
@@HEAVYDUTYCOLLEGE what you think will this program work? better than the other programs? or why mike created if it not works, thanks!
Yes, the program works. Over 2000 people have used it. You can read the testimonials under the videos posted for this channel and see more evidence that it works. Ultimately your genetics will determine your success if you have good genetics for building muscle, then you will build muscle on almost any program. If you value your time, reason, and not living your life in the gym, then Mike’s program will hold appeal.
Does anyone have Mike Mentzers actual workout? I have just started doing one of his later workouts, which is 1 set of 3/4 exercises and then resting for 3 days and then training on the 4th day. A little confused after seeing this video.
Mikes book was written when he gave up body building and took on clientele.
Everything in his book is what he found to be the best method to train, especially for natural lifters.
You can look to Dorian Yates also as he had/has the same method
The 80s and before menzter had much more volume in his workouts before he dialed in his program and understood the importance of low volume to allow adequate recovery.
Im having the same exact issues and have been on the same exact routine as u coincidentally. I’ve seen so many different things of him talking about rest days some saying every other day, some saying every 72 hours some saying 4-7 days some saying 7-21 days. Let’s get in contact so we can talk more cuz we seem to be in the same page
If you need more references to heavy duty training, just watch everything you can with Dorian Yates.
He has some training videos with Mike Thurston. Watch those.
@@Pest44 The different rest periods are for slightly different workouts. However, in the 1993 Heavy Duty book he says 'every other day' to begin with (e.g. M W F) and then when reaching no progress for two weeks, to reduce frequency to every 3rd or 4th day. The even lower frequencies are from his later 'Consolidated routine'.
it works great for me
What id give to have a nautilus pullover machine at my gym 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
