Lou-relaxed, affable, happy, loving...Quite different form other interviews..Then again, Charlie Rose was no slacker either. I enjoyed his memories of Warhol most especially!
I’ve always loved Laurie Anderson oh those dimples - she is so brilliant. I was vinyl rummaging the other day and out popped ‘Language, it’s a Virus’ must be 20+ yrs old and sounds seriously modern or even futuristic in 2019. That’s some shit right there. NASA Artist-in-Residence. Perfect.
Just listened to some her albums for the first time and it was a slap in the face that it was anything but brand new music. Definitely had a vision years ahead of her time
I was just thinking that. Such a shame Charlie Rose turned out to be a sexual harasser - he was also an urbane and sensitive interviewer. Having Laurie by his side made Lou so much more receptive to questions, and Rose's manner allowed Lou to speak - as opposed to giving spiky non-cooperative responses to interrogation-style probing.
Two beautiful voices! Laurie's Yin and Lou's Yang ways... They realy make a WUWEI, that's to say, the "TAO 'two fishes' DYNAMIC/Sacred/SPHERE". They are a Tao couple. And is visible and delightful to see it clearly, the sweet love they share(d). I always loved Lou's singing voice. It's to perfection to the poetry of his songs. And what a beautiful feminine sound Laurie's voice has. Melodious, calm and at the same time strong and musical. Two real souls living the concrete life.
I think some commenters misunderstand the conversation about “work”. They’re not talking about punching in on a 9-to-5, they mean that artists have to work, practice, edit, work, practice, etc in order to create- being an artist is WORK. I’m sure they didn’t meant it as a commentary on employment vs unemployment or that ppl should be slaves to an employer.
Everyone that has negative comments about Lou here, pls look at your own mistakes first. It take some character to handle fame, and artists are sometimes a bit messed up.....and use substances, I did myself as a young artist. The reason is mostly to alter mind and come up with something original, from a different perspective.
Its so funny to see that the most relaxed I've ever seen Lou is on the Charlie Rose episodes. Nothing against Charlie, just figure he might not be the guy that totally understands him. But Lou always seems extremely friendly and willing to talk about everything with him.
Charlie Rose is like the mook, the straight man. He has a certain retarded sort of style that rarely runs afoul of His guests. Not the greatest or the ideal perhaps, but certainly far from the worst.
the fact of the matter -- see Lou's biography -- is that he was selling weed as a student at Syracuse and almost got busted as a result. Lou's later addiction, like Lenny Bruce before him -- was primarily to speed/methadrine -- and Lou like many of us, did a whole lot of shitting things while addicted -- he cleaned up in the early 80s, and in fact in later life wouldn't allow any drugs on tour.
Lou n John Cale doin Songs for Drella.. I've not ever tired of. To give it up as a poignant eulogy was.. Is a beautiful endearing humanity.. Smalltown.. Open House Faces n Names.. And to finish up with. Well now Andy that was a gallery show yer cow wallpaper and yer floating silver pillows. Attention to listening. And they did so
What I know about think-tanks you could fit on the back of a receipt. But...I'd say NASA might keep anybody they find is interesting to have around, being themselves, keeping busy, exploring things. And Ms. Anderson seems every bit that kind of person.
William Faulkner said that "work" was a four letter word. He believed that the concept of work created a joyless world and that one should stay away from it at all costs.
Laurie Anderson’s invited to be interviewed. She agrees to Lou Reed’s participation. Charlie Rose then spends 95% of the time addressing Lou Reed. Typical.
Lou cleaned up his act over 30 years before he died. Why do some of you think that he comes across as arrogant here. At the beginning of the interview they say that they had to fight to get Laurie to come with Lou. All Lou does is praise her here.
Laurie wasn't there to hear her own voice. If she had something to say, she would have said it. Both of them switched their full attention to Laurie when she did begin to say anything, because she doesn't tend to chime in until she has something to add. Thank God true artists don't work on the quota system of artless SJWs.
@@afterthesmash The fuck has being a so-called "SJW" got to do with it? I agree the OP was tone-deaf in their "observation" - it was obvious when she spoke that both men respected her (despite Rose's other workplace behaviours) but being a feminist doesn't automatically make you this largely mythical beast, the "SJW"- it makes you human. Writing their tendency to talk more off in that lazy, misandrist way bothers me - but Lou adored Laurie and maybe the OP was just distracted by his history of arrogance in interviews and a misunderstanding of Rose's interview process.
Loved this, but have a big problem with the demonization of people out of the workplace. I know disabled people who can’t”work” in Snyder’s eyes. They are human beings, interesting kind talented folks. Also, not everyone gets to be lucky to be scooped up by Andy. I wouldn’t call peeing on canvas work , how about single mothers keeping several jobs who would love just sitting down and writing. Not exactly taxing job. Lou worked hard waiting for the man, that’s true, Snyder worked hard assaulting his coworkers and now does not have a job.Imagin all you have to do is sit in a chair ,all cozy, yakking with people. So when Tom was fired did that mean now he’s not interesting any more? Never was,but you get in trouble when you are a mutual admiration club that is obviously smug and very bigoted. What a shame.Fame will protect them if they ever have to get jobs, though.Ok, just saying, nice “ work,” if you can get it.Shame on the guys.Lori seems actually wise and reflected, but she’s chose to hang out with these holier then us,eugenic attitude.
Does anyone sense the "John-and Yoko" vibe in this interview; Lou checking in with Laurie about details of his life, gentle supportive gestures/reflections....and for her "there's nothing she can't do! She's perfect!) Granted: Laurie Anderson is an astounding artist in her own right. But there is no question of her/their loving support of each other.(Is there any other artist with so soothing a voice?)
He didn't sell weed. He sold heroin. You know...the hard stuff that's easy to get hooked on. The same shit that fucked him up for years. And he didn't give a shit that he was getting others addicted. That really does make him a lowlife. Pathetic is not something you'd want to be called, by anyone.. let alone depraved or perverted.
oh my god, i don't like lou's arrogance (though he's lovely here - made the mistake of watching an old interview and won't do it again) but i really like that advice from andy that he won't bring home the bacon if he just sits there doing nothing. i really like that. i like neither of those two men but i like that they gave something to each other.
Q magazine did a chart a few years ago where they mentioned rock music's most horrible people and he was on it. He didn't leave the Velvet Underground...he was sacked and replaced by Doug Youl. He sold speed and heroin, to students, in college. When Bowie suggested he clean up his life, Reed hit him. Lester Banks a devoted fan who was allowed into Reed's hotel room for an all night drinking and bitching lesson once described him as a 'completely depraved pervert and pathetic death dwarf.'
Nice job. You sound like a total idiot. You can't even spell Doug Yule or Lester Bangs, and yet you are now some kind of expert, based on something you saw in Q? I don't know if Reed ever hit Bowie, whom he loved, but he'd knock you out, just for your own good.
Reed made better music than most. What were his horrible faults, sold drugs as a college kid and got sacked from a band and punched Bowie and Bangs had weird things to say about him. Wow. Can we still like him? I think so.
She's a well-bred woman, I can't understand how she got involved with this guy. I mean she could have married a prince or an oligarch. I guess that drugs make odd bedfellows.
charlie is lucky he didn't get knocked out. tapping on the table? 'that i care about'? why is charlie getting arrogant as well. jesus. it's infectious this arrogance thing.
This is just incredible. I have never, ever seen Lou this relaxed and civil with an interview.
Charles Rose is a good interviewer, which matters a lot, you know.
@@tunkamoose1981 uhm...
This was a good interview. Lou and Laurie love and respect one another. Heart warming. : )
These two artists were very much in love with each other and their work. rip Lou
There's so much love between Laurie and Lou. This is probably the happiest he ever was.
Adorable couple. Deepest condolences Laurie. Lou will always be loved and missed.
Glad for their happiness and that at they found each other..
This is an incredible insight to two fabulous artists ~ the love that flows between them adds so much to the interview.
Lou-relaxed, affable, happy, loving...Quite different form other interviews..Then again, Charlie Rose was no slacker either. I enjoyed his memories of Warhol most especially!

A window into one of my favorite artists life

He was both clean and sober by then. So yes, Laurie probably had a good influence on him :)
I like Laurie's dog!

Laurie Anderson is and was so ahead of her time
I'm seeing a different side of Lou here. You can tell Laurie was a great influence on him.
I love these two.
*+..they Look so sweet together! { Andy so often had no film in his camera :-) }*
great and very sad to watch this seeing those two together.
lou looks better than ever.
Lou talks over her in a way that I don’t understand why she put up with it. But he had a more fragile ego, so I guess that explains it.
warm vibe

And only five years old. 😀
"And the musics all right " ... i love rock n roll animal ...
Charlie Rose talks about hard work...
wow!!
❤️❤️❤️Lou & Laurie are lovely❤️
Charlie was the man who said good night to me every night
Artist in residence mainly just lend their name 2 institution 4 PR, appearances, etc if I am guessing. Laurie seems 2 be more involved than that.
Lou could have shut up a little and let Laurie speak. It’s pretty funny. He’s like an excited kid and she sits back and smiles and lets him.
They make a great couple!
