LBJ hasn’t been a great defender since he left the Heat. Steals and blocks aren’t always good defense. It’s often just reaching more and lazy risk taking, like going after the pass and leaking out early instead of closing on the shooter. Gets LBJ 2-3 more steals a game but costs the team a lot more when he misses.
Ngl you missed on the start of the 4th quarter. Lakers do not have a decent backup up big. What I dont understsand, is why dont the Lakers just play Lebron less and he plays hard both ways. Obviously stat padding is the only excuse. It's clear that overall, a motivated, aggressive, energetic Lebron for 15-20 minutes would be far more effective than a no defense Lebron for a regular play duration. He'd be way more effective as the most insane 6th man vs a lagging star.
It's obviously so that he can keep putting up numbers. The only realistic way he can add to his legacy/resume is to pad his numbers more, because hypothetically even if he somehow manages to win 2 more titles, a lot of fans and critics will still bring up MJ's undefeated record in the finals and LeBron knows that.
No team in the entire league pays a man that much money to come off the bench and play 20minutes. Also LeBron has said it’s hard for him to play less minutes since it’s harder for him to get in a rhythm and keep the defense honest
Here's the thing with LeBron teams; since 2017, it's obvious that LeBron has started conserving his energy on defense (by not playing defense and essentially being a statue) so that he can perform on a high level offensively. So when you have someone like LeBron who's going to play defense his way no matter what, there's no defensive scheme a coach can come up with to create a cohesive defense. I think every single one of LeBron's coach, from Ty Lue to JJ, and even his own teammates, knows that LeBron is a huge problem defensively, but no one has the authority to actually challenge him on it. So now every LeBron team's winning chances hugely depends on whether or not LeBron wants to put in effort defensively. And as time goes on, his athleticism becomes worse and worse as he ages, he has less and less energy to spare defensively. The only reason why he's still putting up crazy numbers today offensively is because he plays lazy defense. The only way you can make a LeBron team work defensively now is to have players who plays strategic positional defense who are versatile enough to switch everything. Players like Vanderbilt, AD, Rondo, etc. This Lakers team just doesn't have the personnel for that type of defense.
I disagree, LeBron clearly ramps his defensive effort up all the way in the postseason. You can clearly see from watching the games and from the stats as well. AD and LeBron have been the best defenders on the Lakers during the postseason( great and good defensive players at that). What do you say to dispute this?
@@veetekay4264 What are you exactly disagreeing with me on? There's a reason I said LeBron's teams winning chances hugely depends on whether or not he wants to put in effort defensively. Come playoff time when stats doesn't really hold the same weight towards his legacy, his teams tend to overperform. The 2017 and 2018 Cavs were horrible defensive teams in the regular season, but they both stepped it up comes playoff time and that 2018 Cavs in particular shouldn't have been able to reach the finals in the first place.
@ ok cool, my point is this video is hopping on a bandwagon. Why do we care if a 40yp is playing defense? Same way people are too harsh on younger players. Why do we care if Bron playing defense at 40? Luka very well should be dissected. He’s in his prime

D Lo was supposed to take that step and really be the 2nd option in most games and let Lebron use more energy playing defense at the 4. D Lo and Reaves both have high ceilings and low floors as offensive players and i blame most of it on their athleticism, they cant generate rim looks or get down hill to make the defense react and collapse. Too many jumpers and specifically off the dribble. The team is terribly constructed.
Can I please have the names of the songs you used in this video. Ive been in love with that piano beat from 4:34 for years but Ive had no luck finding it. Please link the name of it even if it is not copyright free. Id buy the beat.
LeBron is old. His energy levels, recovery, stamina, and overall athleticism are very obviously waning and this season is the worst it’s been so far. LeBron’s decreasing physical ability can be masked on the offensive end. On offense and especially as a primary ball handler, you control the tempo and physicality of the possession and what kind of a shot you and your team will get. LeBron has long mastered tempo and efficient use of energy on offense, and he’s always been an excellent shot creator and passer. On offense, the Lakers can also let LeBron “rest” while he’s still on the court as well. He still exerts immense gravity and defensive attention, so even on possessions he “takes off” on offense, the defense still must respect the possibility of him receiving the ball and making something happen. LeBron and the Lakers cannot do the same on defense. Defense is almost exclusively reactive. The only time defense can dictate to the offense-be proactive-is with high effort and good to elite defensive skills from all 5 players + a great scheme & game plan (e.g. the Thunder this year). LeBron can’t control the pace of the possession. He can’t control teams hunting him on defense or “hide” when he’s tired. He can’t avoid exerting high effort and still get by on defense. This doesn’t kill the Lakers competitiveness, though, and hunting for LeBron isn’t some golden ticket to easy offense. Anthony Davis is still a premier rim protector and weakside/help defender. Hunting him in crunch time can be fools gold, and that strategy probably evaporates entirely in the playoffs. The intimidation factor and possibility of a chase down block are still there, and even in his advanced age, he’s still 6’9”, long, strong as shit, and very explosive when he chooses to be. LeBron knows these 82 games only matter for getting into the playoffs. The +1 home game advantage in hypothetical 7 game playoff series is massively outweighed by the possibility of him being healthy and having more energy for the entirety of the playoffs. This has been the story the last 7 years of LeBron’s career. He manages his energy levels and stamina at the cost of inconsistent if not outright poor defensive play throughout the regular season so that he can be a 40-45 minute per game player for 10-20+ games in May and June. The Lakers, if their rotation maintains reasonably good health, can get by with 45-50 wins with LeBron being a one-way superstar throughout the season. Really great video! Basketball fandom needs more folks like you actually talking ball instead of anything but what’s actually happening on the court.
LeHype is an overrated defender. 5 of his 6 Finals losses his defensive assignment (Tony Parker, Kawhi Leonard, Andre Igoudala, Kevin Durant 2x) won Finals MVP. Never got 100 blocks or 200 steals in one season. No defensive statistical titles. Curry got 1, Rondo got 1, Dwight Howard got 2, Magic got 2, Jordan got 3, Chris Paul got 6. How is this all-time greatness?
Offensive Brilliance is brave.Hes now a TO machine, has a nice set of tape tossing dirty dirty elbow led moving screens, most nights its volume by poor shooting percentages, ice cold from 3, ice cold from the line. This is not worth playing 4 guys on defense.
It’s a very simple math problem. Four players simply can’t defend five. The 35+ minutes he’s on the court, his team has to make up for his defensive absence. LeBron has to reduce his minutes significantly so that he could give more effort on the defensive end.
I honestly think lebron finds the regular season boring. He really only tries during the playoffs, which is understandable considering how long he has played. AD should care more about regular season games than he does.
@TonyMontana-f2h7u I mean, it's not that he doesn't care, but you can imagine playing the sport for almost 30 years now. The novelty wears off unless it is a meaningful game. Especially compared these young dudes: Ja, Edwards, Luka, Wemby, Fox, etc... who are all trying to make a name for themselves and everythingis new for them. But in the playoffs, they'll always get cooked by bron.
He's worse than Kareem and Stockton at 40, and a bit better than the other 40 year olds that have played regularly. He's currently playing like about the third best ever 39-40 year old, fourth if you put 39 year old Jordan over him too.
@@blackveganarchist Look up their stats, their Win Shares, their impact, and how well their teams did. Kareem won a title at 40 as the third best player on the team, and Stockton made the playoffs while giving All Star level production in limited playing time. Try actually researching their impact before you just dismiss this take, my friend.
@@blackveganarchist Nope, look up what Kareem did at 40. Won a title as the third best player on the team, while being an All Star. Do you think Lebron can do better than that this year? The only way is if he wins a title as the second best player on his team, and that ain't happening.
This whole thing is interesting. Because people are basically saying the team would be better off without him. Do y'all actually believe that? I mean hey I'm a Celtics fan, go Champs. I don't give two sh!ts about the Lakers but I find the LeBron discord interesting.
personally i genuinely think they would be. as great as lebron is he’s getting old and is just too ball-dominant at his age. like yes he will have good performances but when things arent going well for him, he still holds the ball most of the time. not to mention the defence! its an odd situation for sure though
@Silverado-pq6xe great break down. I can see that. He would make a great 3rd option especially with his knowledge of the game. I don't know if the Lakers have the personnel or LeBron doesn't believe so. Either way I'm here for the farewell tour.
whether they're better without his is up for grabs, but what i WILL say is that they're FINE without him. they have the worst transition defense (due to lebron) and lebron is constantly lazy on defense. 4 on 5 basketball constantly
He simply needs to take less money if he wants to keep playing. I have no doubt that he can be as great as anyone below the top 5 stars in playoff games if he decides to but he needs young athletes around him that will play defense to cover up his weakness.
Their defensive communication just sucks and highlights how little they practice together. It seems like every few interviews postgame someone brings up how they didn't get a 'chance' to. I'm like how is that happening and how is it allowed. It was happening with Darvin Ham too. There's something very wrong with the Lakers.
Offensive genius? You mean flopping, dislodging, frequent traveling, referees giving him way more FTs than he deserves, and scorer's table giving him assists he doesn't deserve? Sure.
Lebron is still well worth having on the roster because he can provide you with defense along with his elite offense when playoff time comes. The problem is the entire roster lol.
if you ask me, his defense has been declining since 2015. Sure he can get a highlight chasedown block but actually watch the games and you'll see. it went from bad permeter defense to just straight up laziness. can guard 1-5 my ass...people forget heat culture forced him to play defense, which is why he was better on defense on the heat than on the cavs in my estimation.
@@Randomytname1yea I think over since 2015 he hasn’t really been serious on D in regular season he picks up tho in the playoffs But he was playing really good D in 2020
At one point its undeniable, along with Kawhi, Draymond, Kobe, Rodman, Pippen and Jordan, Lebron is on the short list of players who could guard 1-5 and that was shown to still be the case when he’s fully locked in in the Olympics that just happened where he played great defense on Jokic. I think his athleticism is not where it used to be.
ts is hilarious we're not accounting for the fact the lebron and AD this game literally qccount for the majority of the lakers points, i believe they dropped around 80 combined and buddy is talking about a few defensive lapses
Trust me. LeBron’s defense is extremely detrimental. If he tried to fill the role Vando plays, the team would be so much better. Cut, screen, run in transition, shoot the open 3 and play defense. That’s all I want from him.
Brother the thumbnail literally says “Brilliant offense, terrible defense” lol. The talking point of this video is whether or not Lebrons offensive boost outweighs his defensive liability. As he’s grown older, he’s trying to conserve energy on the defensive end which makes sense, but as you saw in the video, he’s at the point where teams KNOW this, and are now even hunting him in PnR, something you never would’ve seen 5-10 years ago.
@jonesbonesjon6031 are you stupid? clearly he doesn't give them all back otherwise they'd literally attack him every possession of the game, holy fuck yall are dumb
@TheAwesomeAsian300 I agree yeah but this night is an outlier him and AD literally account for over 70% of the lakers points whether it's points or assists and its just not fair to expect him to be staying in front of everyone in a random night in November or December, whenever the fuck this game was
Defensive lapses, bad communication, bad rotation, that I can completely agree with. But any time any analysis goes 'bad defense because he got beaten to the rim' when you see the speed with which players operate nowadays just makes me instantly switch off. I understand you're trying to tell a story but you could have told that story without resorting to labeling things as 'bad defense' that easily happen 20 times in a game and routinely to good defenders too. He's not an elite defender anymore, not even a good defender in a typical sense (organization, coaching and recognizing plays are, in my book, almost as important as having the physical attribute to defend), but you can make that argument without resorting to pointing out typical plays that happen all the time. We might as well start labeling any step-back Luka makes as 'bad defense' because 'he got his shot off'.
LeBron is finished. Hes too old and the idea of saving energy on defense to this amount simply isnt going to work. A few years ago he could turn it up for the entire fourth if he rested on defense in the first 3 quarters. Now? We're lucky to see a few possessions of locked in LeBron. More importantly unlike what some morons say, it can be done but you need the roster to do so. The Lakers dont have that roster. Golden state successfully hid Curry for all of their rings on defense by simply pre-switching. LeBron's biggest weakness is his arrogance. He refuses to take coaching the way MJ or Kobe did, being a cog in the machine because for so long he was the machine from HS on. He's seen in all so he refuses to see it from a different perspective - a coach's. He's seen what teams work so he forces his GM into bad trade, see westbrook, and FA decisions; see Tristan Thompson and JR smith, he has to learn that he needs to be a cog in the system for this type of team to win. The change that needs to happen is simple - the Lakers need to move DLo and Rui for a defensive wing who can hide LeBron more and a ball creating G who can score. That trade combination simply doesnt exist right now.
i wouldnt blame LeBron for "his effort" on defense. the coaching staff is inconsistent on switching which has players confused and lare to rotation. The goal for Lebron and AD are to be closer to the paint, especially for Lebron if AD has to switch on the pick and roll. If on an off ball screen he switches that pushes AD and Lebron away from the paint which leaves the paint wide open.
I don’t think he’s offense is that brilliant. I think he hurts his team by dominating the ball and not allowing his teammates consistency with touches. I think this version of him is more hurt than help
This wouldn’t be an issue if AD was an MVO candidate and the lakers actsully had a a roster with athletes and playmakers on the team. Expecting a 39 year old to make plays on defense and offense 35 minutes a game and be an all nba top 10 player in the world is nuts. WITH THT SAID, if you’re on the floor you have to give it your all or just retire or hold bench. But if he dies that, the lakers are the worse team in the league
lebron should have been a step in before the pass out to put pressure on the ball, too, and then also late on the rotation... he still has game changing skills but some of his habits aren't efficient, and I dunno why he needs more offensive statistics. That he will get anyway, wins gonna come from him being Power Forward scoring rebounding and making the paint tough, with about 6 assists a game
Offensive brilliance - yet the Lakers offensive rating is WORSE with him on the floor. I wonder why.... Oh, wait, I know. It's because LeBron plays offense to pad his ppg/reb/ast stats, not to win games. That's not brilliance. LeBron's 3 moves: 1. Stand at the 3 point line and wait for the defense to sag off of him on the strong side, so he can brick a 3. 2. Stand at the 3 point line and wait for the defense to sag off of him on the weak side, so he can get a wide open dunk. 3. Bulldoze to the rim against smaller players.
4:20 is hilarious 😂 LeBron arrives like 15 minutes late. Just surprised he didn’t point at his teammates as usual when he was just standing around. If you’re too old to play at 100% - just retire. And take your mini-me with you.
This compared to duality of James Randle, LeBron James "duality" is better. Yeah, there are times he's lazy on defense but based on your duality of Julius Randle, it seems like Julius Randle does 0 defense 100% offense
If yall look back to his games in his prime, not highlights, you'll notice he wasn't a decent defensive player back then as well. LeBron's defensive positioning wasn't great-he often end up where he shouldn't be. Either he's overhelping or leaving his man open. Honestly, he's one of the most overrated defenders out there. However, his defense became pretty good when he really wanted to lock someone up and win the game. So I believe he just was too lazy to put up good defense, cuz good defense takes too much energy and doesn't show much in the stats.
Its funny cause alot of people acting here like mj and kobe really locking people up in their 35 mins of playing time they just have a couple of defensive play in a game compile to a yt video and everyone saying they both are a defensive menace 🤦♂️🤡
Lakers roster just isn't good enough, he's too old for what they're asking of him every night. I doubt any player in history has been asked to do so much for a team at his age
Lebron is not a kid anymore and during regular season he normally won't care all that much about defense. When the push comes to shove if the team is on par he can raise up his defensive game to any heights.
Btw Lebron’s stats are inflated because of the ambiguous assist rule set forth by the NBA. Many of his assists are not a result of an instant reaction by the player who’s scoring the basketball.
Now twist your dumb statement even frther to explain how that only helps his stats and no one else. Maybe klutch pays the statkeepers to not give other players the same type of assists? imirite?
Bron should call it a day imo. He said he won’t be that player hanging on for dear life while not giving maximum effort in playing the game. He’s clearly doing it now and have lost games for LA in doing so. No one person in the team could hold him accountable for it as he’ll just use his age and the need to conserve his energy for playmaking as an excuse. Defense is half the game. This the same reason y’all benched DLo
You can't win with LeBron stans. I criticized him in this game even though the stat sheet says he went insane (I'm a Lakers fan), and LeBron fans said "but he had 40 and he's☝🤓". Two things can be true at the same time: someone can have a great game while also making mistakes that helped his team lose the game. I criticize my favorite player on the team when he doesn't play at the level he should, and I will praise him when he meets or exceeds that expectation. Some LeBron fans need to learn that lesson.
the issue is the rest of the team playing like shit defensively. you can’t rely on lebron at 39 and AD to cover all the defensive mistakes while accounting for almost all the points generated on offense. at some point the rest of the roster has to step up and do their jobs. yes lebron had a few lapses, but what about 12 other players that are food on defense and non-threats on offense?
Did you ever realized how much of a dirty player he is. I recently started to notice this, moving screens, little elbows in traffic or a shoulder on running player, dislodging. He gets away with a lot
The officiating today is based on catering LeBron's playstyle, or lack of skill to be accurate. No double dribbles are called, no step violations, offensive fouls are called, but plenty of free throws are award to the offensive players for no reason. Giannis is possibly even more dirty than LeBron, and has caused countless injuries to opposing players on purpose, but has received next to no repercussions. Harden says Giannis has no skill, and Harden's right. Giannis and LeBron exploit today's corrupt officiating to the max, and wouldn't get away with it in any other era.
@@kenlen8029 Giannis and LeBron aren't skilled players. They aren't good players. They should be playing in the paint. Julius Randle can't do shit in the perimeter without elbowing the defender. Same with Paul George, who's another 6'9 player who would be an inside player in any other era. Playing physical doesn't equate the offensive player being allowed to shove an elbow to the defender's face, and the defender getting called a foul on. Physical play is something completely different. That's the point.
Brilliant offense? Bruh please stop. No need to dance around critiquing him, give his ass the full spectrum. He’s an abysmally shitty defender and a slightly above average offensive player (though most nights he’s between trash and mediocre).

Dique “duality.” Bruv there’s no duality in this situation; he’s shitty on defense (10 years n counting, some years being arguably the worst defender in the entire league) and he’s shitty on offense. There’s no duality in that.
@@silewis9396 I didn’t say that others were not responsible for their lack of effort, including LeBron. But if you asked this to AD himself, he would also say that his decision making towards the end caused them the game.
@drayvn3508 He's obviously not alone. LeBron is a ballhog on offense, and bad on defense. There is no duality to LeBron anymore. Saying duality in a nasal voice doesn't change that.
I know a lot of people say that LeBron is a terrible defender. There are times when I agree. He really doesn’t play defense, but it’s funny because he’s actually the greatest chase down shot blocker in history keyword I said chase down shot blocker. I know, it’s frustrating. I’m surprised he can even tell a Hawk to a Laker in this game.
His defense gets a lot better during the playoffs
@@VeryRestarted 1000%.

I want to see him against Jokic in the playoffs again.

AD should care more about regular season games than he does.
such a W attitude to have hahahahhahahha all those millions and he doesn’t care 😂
Their opponents probably care more too. That's why they'll continue to be fighting to be a play-in team 😂
Understandable but he needs to exert a little more if he wants the team to succeed
LeBron needed 2 weeks off in the regular season when he was 30y old, he's just not built to be great.
"He's telling them to switch" yet he doesn't, which leads to the basket.
How this performance compare to other aging superstar? I know this is grade C for young lebron. but at this age, how we grade it.
He's worse than Kareem and Stockton at 40, and a bit better than the other 40 year olds that have played regularly. He's currently playing like about the third best ever 39-40 year old, fourth if you put 39 year old Jordan over him too.

personally i genuinely think they would be. as great as lebron is he’s getting old and is just too ball-dominant at his age. like yes he will have good performances but when things arent going well for him, he still holds the ball most of the time. not to mention the defence! its an odd situation for sure though
Taking less money is not it. Don't ever do that 😂. But he was going to take less if they can get him another star. Which they couldn't so he didn't.
Their defensive communication just sucks and highlights how little they practice together. It seems like every few interviews postgame someone brings up how they didn't get a 'chance' to. I'm like how is that happening and how is it allowed. It was happening with Darvin Ham too. There's something very wrong with the Lakers.
Plus he is not on a team friendly deal, this is what makes him hard asf to build around

ts is hilarious we're not accounting for the fact the lebron and AD this game literally qccount for the majority of the lakers points, i believe they dropped around 80 combined and buddy is talking about a few defensive lapses
Trust me. LeBron’s defense is extremely detrimental. If he tried to fill the role Vando plays, the team would be so much better. Cut, screen, run in transition, shoot the open 3 and play defense. That’s all I want from him.
A few lapses? A few? Lol. What's the point of scoring 20 or 30 if you immediately give all of those points back on defense. Huh?
@TheAwesomeAsian300 I agree yeah but this night is an outlier him and AD literally account for over 70% of the lakers points whether it's points or assists and its just not fair to expect him to be staying in front of everyone in a random night in November or December, whenever the fuck this game was
it sucks that AD literally threw that away with 30 sec left...
Also Gabe leaving Tray open with like 4 seconds ... WTF
Imagine this being your GOAT
The Pistons need to find players like Santi Aldama
I don’t think he’s offense is that brilliant. I think he hurts his team by dominating the ball and not allowing his teammates consistency with touches. I think this version of him is more hurt than help
He should be setting screens way more. Let DLo and Reaves handle the ball. Lebron should try to be like Draymond, connecting.
This is the most I have not seen the LeBron played this year by choice. I just don’t even look for his highlights anymore. I don’t know what it is
This wouldn’t be an issue if AD was an MVO candidate and the lakers actsully had a a roster with athletes and playmakers on the team.
4:03 you never help from strong side corner, no team coaches players to do that anymore
That is true but it's not absolute. The weak side was already trailing to the elbow. You'd rather give up a wide open layup?
Offensive brilliance is stat padding.
