Olowokandi was a big project which did not work out. He was basically a guy with a huge body, natural athleticism and little else. He had no real passion for basketball, he was just there physically but mentally he really wasn't engaged, and did not enjoy playing. The way he developed his basketball skills in just about 5 years (17-22) it's kind of unheard of, however. Had he started earlier, or fallen in love with the game... who knows. He was definitely a natural and a fast learner (he basically doubled his numbers every year he played in college!)
facts, in some ways he reminded me of Ryan Hollins with better basketball talent. Great size and natural athleticism, performed well in track and field, but learned basketball too late and never really loved the game enough to be a true professional.
Kandi man just wanted a big payday contact.. once he got that, he went into cruise mode for the rest of good career. Dude told Kareem "don't nobody wanna learn them old moves"..
The only reason he went number one was that old adage in basketball. You can’t teach height. Teams are more willing to take a chance on a 7 foot project than a 6 foot project.
Teams drafted based on need back then, and not the best player available. So you’re correct that the centerpiece in that era was always a dominant 5 to build around.
Man both your Channels are Gems. Your videos bring back so much nostalgia when I was a kid growing up with Hip Hop and Basketball. They were such a big deal to me as a kid.
Olowokandi figured out the best way for him to earn a living was to play basketball, and he just had no passion at all for the game. He figured he would do just enough to get decent minutes. If he gave a damn, he would have stayed in shape, be coachable and work on his skills!!
I know his family in Lagos, Nigeria. He sure has a wealthy background. The first part of his surname, OLOWO means "one who is wealthy" in the Yoruba Language (The Yoruba is a tribe in Nigeria. Hakeem Olajuwon is also from that Nigerian tribe)
You really should add the fact that the Clippers wore a horrific team during that time. It was literally like the death of a draft pick to go to that team.
I remember Olowokandi was compared to David Robinson, the Admiral didn’t play organized ball until his senior yr of highschool too. Michael had the skills, his foot work was great.
From his highlights he had a natural great touch from the low post. He probably would have average 15 to 20 points if he love basketball. I doubt most HOF players could have made the NBA playing basketball at 17 and enter the draft at 22.
In high school I used to go to a lot of parties in the basketball house on the campus of The University of the Pacific in Stockton,Ca. Olowokandi was very laid back, and humble. I think him not growing up playing basketball as a youth and being involved in so many other sports hindered his interest in hoops

You have some anomalies to late bloomer rule who turned out great: Tim Duncan didn't start until 15, Hakeem Olajuwon almost 16, Embiid 15, Mutumbo 17, Rodman was 21 after a growth spurt, Mark Eaton didn't start until 3 years after graduating. Like you said though, Olawakandi just wasn't meant to be great. Good video as always.
Anthony Bennett says "you clearly didn't watch me play" Lol and why would you remember a #1 pick that only played a YEAR AND A HALF in the NBA!! lol....And that was just 2013. Kwame Brown was also worse than Oluwakandi stats wise. He just lasted 14 years vs 9 years. But Kandi's best two years> Kwame's
I did also want to mention in the Ed Cota video that in the late 90s and early 2000s that teams had too much of a hard on for finding their next Shaq, Dirk, KG or Kobe (especially Shaq), that they blew a lot of picks on these "high upside" players, while skilled players fell by the wayside. Olowokandi didn't have the passion, skills, experience or basketball IQ to really warrant this pick. His bad work ethic also compounded it, since he didn't stay in shape.
Personality matters in sports. Which is why you have to read into someone's personality first it can't just be all talent. This guy clearly had no desire no heart no passion didn't care about the game. But the clippers were fooled by looking at his 22 ppg against subpar competition in college.
@Kings Will Soon Rise That's true, but to be fair he was in that job for 22 years and they only made the playoffs twice in that whole time, but I agree Donald Sterling was the shits.
