What Is a Surfacing Bit and Why You Need It for your CNC Router

- If you are wondering what a surfacing bit is and why you need one, this video tutorial will explain it. it is a wide bit designed for your CNC router to surface your spoilboard or flatten slabs.
Surfacing bits are a necessity to have because a spoilboard, or wasteboard, must be flattened before you start making CNC router projects. The standard surfacing bit for CNC routers is the 1-inch surfacing bit. These work great but can take a bit of time. The IDC Woodcraft 1-1/2 inch surfacing bit will cut the surfacing time by at least half simply due to the wider body.
There are no other 1-1/2 surfacing bits designed for benchtop CNc routers such ast the Longmill MK2 or Shapeoko, Millwright and others.

I can't til I use mine. Its going to make some quick work of my spoilboard!! 👍
Donna said "hello Garrett" as I was watching this. 😄 She's liking these videos. 😉
Joe, glad you liked this one brother. And Hello Donna!! Glad to hear she likes the videos too!
I just got that bit and it leaves a finish like silk, top quality stuff.
Andy, glad you liked that one brother.
Keep doing what you are doing. From the bits to the helpful videos, you are a great support for me and many others trying to put their CNC to work.
David, will do brother! I am so happy to hear my videos have helped you.
Thanks for a great video on a cool bit! I really appreciate what you’re doing to support the CNC community!
206, glad you liked this one brother!
Great info as always!
Chris, glad to hear it brother!
Will purchase one soon. The HOG is another great bit.
Nwnimbleman, right on brother. I am excited to get that bit out to you.
Bravo!
JR, glad you liked this one brother.
One day I’ll get to put my Longmill 2 together.
Randito, keep working hard brother!
Can you make a video about using the hog? How to set it up in Vectric and then following up with a finishing bit. Suggest making a deep candy dish.
I do believe he does have a video on the HOG bit. That bit is amazing.
Graham, I have been working on a dish video brother! It should be a good one.
Hello, congratulations for the great work!
I'm a beginner at cnc und I would like to know if you were so kind to make a video about a rotary toolpath, especially about how or which postprocessor to choose for my cnc 3 axis machine? Thanks
Luiz, that is a tough one brother! I would reach out to your machine manufacturer on the best one to choose.
@@IDCWoodcraft thank you so much for the answer!
Hello, What is the difference between using your 1-1/2" four flute surfacing bit and your 1" four flute surfacing bit? Just 1/2" wider cut? Using on a 1f with a Makita router.
Michael, that is it brother! Just the wider cut to add stability and make jobs so much faster!
I surfaced a piece of warped mahogany with my Longmill using the Makita router. I used a 1 inch 3 tooth surfacing bit. The bit seemed to burn the wood. I had the feed rate at 300 and my router turned all the way up. Am I supposed to run slower to avoid burning?
The router is turning way too fast. Being the dial to 2
@@IDCWoodcraft thanks
What surfacing bit would you recommend for a foxalien with a makita palm router on it?
Hi Jesus. If it has a 1/8 shank, this one

If it has a 1/4 shank, this one

@@IDCWoodcraft thank you so much for your help!
How do you hold the piece you are cutting securely to the base?
Doug, there's a few different ways you can do this. You can use a vacuum table, hold down clamps, or CA glue and painters tape method. It really depends on personal preference!
Would the StepCraft MM1000 spindle be able to handle this bit?
Dave, absolutely brother! It shouldn't have a problem!
@@IDCWoodcraft awesome thank you! Ordering now.

PollyWilson, sorry brother not too sure I understand.
@IDCWoodcraft sorry.. apparently a pop-up came on and requested a zip code of where I was watching from and I thought it was from your sight.
