      Actually,
James Doohan (the originally Scotty) beat Shatner to space.
Doohan's ashes to my knowledge have been flown on AT LEAST 2 spaceflights.
Shatner was only the first living Trek cast member AND oldest-living astronaut... but he didn't make it into orbit! LOL
Doohan's ash remains went into orbit on the Shuttle, ashes spent some time on the ISS (possibly), and they might have shot some of his ashes to the Moon, too, Alice!

Well, 15:10 competition wasn't required to get to that level. It's ok though since there were alot of new computer technologies and gadgets that were developed since the early 1960's. This is also required for more efficient systems. You don't need to send up a computer weighing a ton when a few laptops nowadays works great.

I don't think the G-force ever got above 3G's. The engines do throttle to reduce the G-force.
They controlled G-acceleration on the Shuttle. It never went about 3G's on the ascent mode which is why they had astronauts in their 60's and 70's flying on the Shuttle. I think the previous age record was 77 and that might have been John Glenn.

I'm waiting for the technical analysis of this flight. While it's true that it appears that no injuries occurred, this wasn't exactly a successful mission.
The capsule never attained sustained apogee. It went up, paused for a second or two, and then came down - fast. No one inside the capsule unbuckled their seat belt and were able to truly experience weightlessness. So from a "space tourism" perspective - I'd be asking for my money back.
And the jolt on landing - from the telemetry, the capsule was traveling at about 15 mph when it "landed".
Frontal air bags are generally designed to deploy in "moderate to severe" frontal or near-frontal crashes, which are defined as crashes that are equivalent to hitting a solid, fixed barrier at 8 to 14 mph or higher. (This would be equivalent to striking a parked car of similar size at about 16 to 28 mph or higher.) Hopefully, Mr. Shatner's neck and spine are uninjured.

Reed James, " No-one unbuckled their seat belt " ?
Yes they did : we saw them floating around,
3 having fun, but Bill went back to the window,
taking in the enormity of what was happening .
Let's all try to learn from what he said about it,
      on return.

This was an awesome, somewhat historic event. But somehow the CBS News coverage was basically horrible at best. Just had a bunch of people covering the event that were more interested in hearing themselves talk. First they almost chatted over the entire countdown and then were talking so much they missed the separation in flight. One of them even mentioned that he almost stepped all over the final countdown that he didnt want to do thay for the separation, well too late. That event took place 20 seconds prior to his comment. Maybe this is ehy CBS was not provided credentials to have a camera crew on the ground at the landing site.

CBS dropped the ball on this one. The footage looked great but, the CBS people didn't shut up until only 3 seconds before liftoff. Also interviewing some "expert' and having him in a larger window on screen bigger that the rocket tracking camera. I don't think anyone cares about what he looks like. Just play his audio while showing the launch. The CBS commentators didn't have a clue of what was going on. Asking when separation was going to happen when it was clear to everyone watching that it had already occurred. They came off sounding like a bunch of nit wits.

I was a huge fan of the original Star Trek, but COME ON! Capt. Kirk is a FICTIONAL CHARACTER. William Shatner is an actor. If his 10 minute ride in an automated capsule makes him an astronaut, then I am an airline pilot because I took a flight. I am also a ship captain because I took a Cruise. This is nothing but a cheap publicity stunt. Could we please admit that? Having said that, I hope Shatner enjoyed his ride.
