  • Let’s talk about grand hidden architecture, shady characters, redemption, the true nature of spires, and the possibility of inherited buildings. I’m going to try to keep this as brief as possible, but when I came across this story, and architecture, I felt it was absolutely worth sharing with you.
In today’s video we will be discussing the sprawling lands of Fonthill in Wiltshire, England. Reportedly developed by the Beckford family in the mid to late 1700’s, Fonthill contained massive buildings, including an Old World Style Romanesque Home, known as Fonthill Splendens, a massive defensive wall fortifying Fonthill which stretched for six miles, and finally, the real focus of the video, the over 300 foot tall Fonthill Abbey, also known as Beckford’s Folly.
Let us take a deep dive into this seemingly impossible construction, while briefly discussing what the current narrative has to say. Of note, Fonthill was a private residence and has no affiliation with Royal England or any government official. Fonthill was “sold” and demolished by the mid 1800’s (reset time). Please let me know your thoughts about Fonthill in the comments down below. I look forward to hearing from you!

I live just down the road from Fonthill estate......up until 2009 it was owned by a Mr Neal Rimington who was also a great friend of my grandfather, he lived in what remained of Fonthill Abbey, the main of the Fonthill estate is now owned by Lord margadale, I know him well and have fished the main lake many times........all around Fonthill are many estate houses and farms, follies and baths......it really is an amazing place, steeped in history, if only those walls could talk!

Even more, William Beckford the 2nd wrote VATHEK which is said to be "a masterpiece of bizarre invention and sustained fantasy" and was admired by future authors like Lord Byron. VATHEK, written entirely in French, is possibly the first "vampire" novel or the precursor to them. Read his books/writings to learn more about him. He also wrote under other names as well. He also wrote music in the Portuguese language. His father (same name) has a statue made of him and was a member of Parliament. So, it gets weirder, beyond the houses/buildings.

"Beckford's Gothic novel, Vathek, an Arabian tale, was originally written in French when the author was 21. It is the story of Caliph Vathek, whose eye can kill at a glance, who makes a pact with the Devil, Eblis." - Goodreads

Fabulous story!!! The French have some odd times to Baltimore, Maryland. Some of the Bonaparte Family was buried at the cemetery I worked at.
It's all about the creation of the narrative. Historically, the World Health Initiatives of today go something like this.....
There was once a "Sect" of people on a "Mission" of "World Domination." They sailed to Baltimore and the crusaders built "The Resort" to care for the sea people. Then the Baltimore Hospital won their hearts and minds by caring for the poor. That allowed the Religious Society of Friends to name Johns Hopkins, followed by the Society of Jesus that "Saved" with Rockefeller's SCHOOL of Hygiene and Public health. However, a new order took over for the 21st century controlled by the Zi0nist, Bloomberg SCHOOL of Public Health.
Now, the "Religious Freedom" movement is called "Forced Health Care."
They are rewriting the history AGAIN.... this time using Hollywood Stars and AI Influencers to tell a new tale. Enjoy the ride!!

@@ms.donaldson2533 I was going to say, I doubt that's how it went, because history is so fake, have you heard about when Bonapart (I think) marched on Moscow and some say there was some kind of biological weapon released or even a nuclear bomb/? (nukes don't exist good the alternative history on this) The timeline is so fake that Bonapart was probably only 100 years ago or more recent... or was someone else entirely. It all goes back to Adam and Even and the Serpent in the garden.

Hey Mr Boosters, in the last few days we've watched a handful of your vids now and just want to take this opportunity to say hi, say thank you and wish you a Merry and Happy time whatever your inclination at this time of year. Just this morning watched the Timgad whilst having a bath and have a new rabbit hole to explore. BTW did you ever hear that Pompeii and the so called destruction of it in 79AD is also potentially a tarnished story as the facts don't add up but that there was to hide and be covered up in that town for the narrative of the time to support.
Anyways, have a great one Sir and see you in 2022!!!

What do you mean “there are no records of the tallest buildings in England pre-1860”? There are many lists online that show cathedrals/ abbeys as the tallest buildings in England for centuries:
For example, tallest buildings in the *world* for the year 1350:
    1. Lincoln Cathedral, England (160m),
    2. Old St. Paul’s Cathedral, England (150m),
    3. Pyramid of Giza, Egypt (139m),
    4. St. Nicholas Church, Germany (132m),
    5. Malmesbury Abbey, England (131m).
And, tallest buildings in *England* for the same year [1350]:
    1. Lincoln Cathedral, England (160m),
    2. Old St. Paul’s Cathedral, England (150m),
    3. Malmesbury Abbey, England (131m),
    4. Salisbury Cathedral, England (123m),
    5. Norwich Cathedral, England (96m).
Do you perhaps mean ‘private’ dwelling specifically?

If he claimed he needed more space, and he forced the townspeople and their animals for the construction of his home, and he only had 1 guest in 30 years; then it means only one thing… He was probably a giant, and a bully, that no one cared to be around. He must have known that he wouldn’t stop growing and upon returning home he went to work first on that 6 mile long wall. He probably knew he would be a target by the townspeople, hence that wall, but eventually needed their help anyway. Not getting anyone to pitch in and help, he resorted to becoming a bully after demonstrating by his eating of 11 of the townspeople that he meant business! Yes, the story of its construction would need to be forgotten, and yes my story is probably way off, but everything seems “off” right now. At least my story has him remembering to feed those 11 “examples” that he did away with.

@@ovalroom2 Just the usual ones the doctors all insist we take if we are over 60 years of age. None that are prescribed by Dr. Feelgood. I guess I was just putting myself in the shoes of a supposed giant; trying to figure out what I would have done had I kept growing. I’ve heard it discussed that England had taken care of its giant problem centuries earlier, but who knows. What would you do if you found yourself in a similar situation? I probably would have wanted to stay out of sight behind a wall and keep out of sight. But it’s not easy being that green giant that everyone certainly wanted to do away with. This story that he shared might be the same one we heard about when we were children. “Fe Fy Fo Mum; I smell the blood of an English mon.” Not much has been discussed from their perspective. If you let your mind wander a bit, you might even be able to ponder the possibility that his wife didn’t die during childbirth, but rather was killed, preventing that new child from growing up and becoming a giant too! So yes, it would be a very lonely existence. It would of taken a lot of courage to have walked up to that 30’ front door and walking in as a guest. What I am trying to get across, is the fact that we can’t choose how big and tall we might end up becoming. All we can do though is offer coal, blankets and food to someone that cared to help when help may have have been desperately needed. If you needed a bigger, secure place and didn’t have the building skills; your first few attempts would probably come tumbling down too. He just may have been a kind giant at first; but having been outright judged unfairly, had no other choice but to take what he asked for. Later I am sure he paid back more than enough to try and reconcile himself with his god.

Excellent presentation on one of Britain's largely forgotten but amazing buildings. Had it survived it would have been the greatest example of gothic revival architecture in the UK. A couple of points, Beckford didn't run out of money during construction in fact 500 labourers worked around the clock in shifts to get it completed as quickly as possible. As a result the tower was eventually a stone mix cladding over wooden supports with inadequate foundations. It collapsed for the last time in 1821 where the air blast allegedly blew a servant 50 feet down the corridor. Beckford didn't own it then, being sold to a William Farquhar who was in residence at the time. Cathedrals typically take 100 years plus to build so the fact this was completed in such a short time, even given the labour available, says it all. A truncated fragment is all that is left of the house, plus of course the gatehouse and various follies. A real shame as I would happily pay to have seen it. There are various books on it, a good one being lost treasures of Britain by Roy Strong. Apologies if my dates are slightly out l am out and about at the moment. Anyway excellent presentation on a wonderful building. Best wishes Marco Serafini.

It's in the middle of nowhere. The character given to be the protagonist of the story was mixed race, his father was a slaver. Gothic history England. There's far more to it all, there is 'Roman' history too for the area and of course the history of that which saw the destruction of what we call 'Roman' but I would rather think of as 'Atlantean' times. Wiltshire is not a city, it is a shire, a rural area. There's something more to be told, or maybe not. Weird and dark. I wouldn't be happy to muse on it or share thoughts on what I found when I briefly explored the story of the place. Too dark.

This house existed, and is well documented. sadly demolished after the tower collapsed. William Beckford was no shady... He was gay and lived an exceptional life.
The tower was 280 feet high. The tower was timber framed clad in stone and render. Beckford kept wanting to increase the height of the tower. He disliked his father's house which was damp by the lake. As he got to build the new house, his income was getting less as sugar was less profitable. There was never a spire on top of the tower. He had builders working 24 hours a day, using builders from all the local towns. Suggest reading up the many books on Fonthill if you are intrigued.

Bit more digging find the auction catalogues and estate guides. Timber and plaster/mortar cause he wanted it quick, European Cathedral takes centuries to build, he was impatient. My car is 14 years old and very much out of fashion with the times but that does not mean it is a Roman Chariot!

I’m weary of “artistic interpretations” they look more like actual photos, way to detailed and precise to be drawings

Oh dear another American getting the details wrong. Beckford knew Courtenay for several years before inviting him to Beckford's 21st birthday party - that lasted three days. Oh dear the dates and events are all scrambled.... 12 mile wall to keep the hunt out and for privacy. Beckford;s house was based on Portuguese abbeys, and he wanted an abbey (not a cathedral). He did not live 10 years in Switzerland - it was ten years in Lisbon following the incident with Courtenay in 1788. Tower was 285 feet - just a shade less than the Elizabeth Tower which houses Big Ben. The tower was a timber upper part on stone arcaded base. The growth of dry rot caused it to collapse in 1825. The issue of timber frame was for speed and as a structural reason. The rest of the building was of stone, part using hi father's old house as a quarry. The old house was in a damp location, next to a public road so lacked privacy.
He employed 500 masons, working 24 hours a day. All well explained in various books. It never had a spire!
He did not keep rebuilding his house - just parts of the tower.
His life story is fascinating - Join the Beckford Society for a small subscription and find out new rersearch and enjoy Beckford.

Sounds like pure fiction. I imagine at the time of writing down fake history the powers that be made it up as they went!

he was ostracized by society, but still that one visit were scandalous to say the least... the infamous Emma Lady Hamilton and the war hero Heratio Nelson and William Hamilton... very very famous people, i believe there were movies about them played by Vivian Leigh. (they were in throuple or something, but for whatever reason they are accepted by society although Emma wasn't really because she was a maid)

Beckford was a fruitcake who was so impatient to build Fonthill Abbey that it didn't have proper foundations (if any). The wood, plaster and concrete structures were fundamentally unstable, hence the tower collapsing three times., Beckford's greatest regret was that he wasn't around to see the collapse.

Why the manufactured controversy? Why bother? And using the word “narrative” continuously. I love the architecture and the history, but the undertone of everything is a little paranoid.
