2:50-2:58 When I first saw that play here on YT nearly a decade ago, THAT'S when I knew this was the guy the Dodgers needed to sign on the international FA market! Amazing baseball talent, damn shame his MLB career didn't live up to the hype (most of that due to his inability to improve his understanding of the game as well as maintain a consistent work ethic). Still remember that first week he had in the bigs with the Dodgers, thought I was looking at Mike Trout's Cuban equal for a hot moment there...

PeekaPeep I was alerted to him by friends in Cienfuegos, just missed seeing him play in Cuba but did see Abreu & Moncada with the Elefantes. I’m hoping Puig is still young enough to find a landing spot (does somebody still sign him this year vs making a trade?) otherwise he could pivot to Japan, if that happens a return to the Cuban National Series isn’t ridiculous.

PeekaPeep it’s also funny how worlds connect as the pitcher Norberto Gonzalez is a good friend now whose Casa I stay at in Cienfuegos when I visit.

@@CubaDugout Good stuff right there, buddy! Yeah, I think MLB is heavily conspiring to keep Puig out of the league for good and using COVID-19 hysteria as a cheap excuse in doing so. They never did warm up to his ultra-colorful personality and that's really too bad. Last time I heard, the Braves signed him to a low-risk deal but due to that Corona bug he apparently contracted that deal's been put on hold indefinitely. Pray he lands a job somewhere in the pros, dude's still in his baseball prime for cryin' out loud!

@@PeekaPeep I think somebody is going to get him on a sweetheart deal for 2021 as long as the business side doesn’t effect his attitude coming in and he realizes this a huge showcase year that team could have found gold. I think the best fit might be the Astros, who with their infield core still have a shot but have to add some pieces or risk wasting their window, plus they are challenging the White Sox for being Cuba’s best team.

Say what you want about his ability in the bigs, this kid is easily one of the most fun players to watch and wow is he a freak athlete

I often forget myself that he is only 29, I think the Braves signing him today is a low risk high reward move, especially since Nick Markakis announced he is sitting out 2020.

Cuba Baseball: Phil In The Blanks I’m not the biggest Cuban baseball follower although I do follow them in the bigs, but would you say puig was a special athlete among Cuban players or are there more just like him coming up? It seems like with him, moncada and Robert we keep seeing Cuban players have scary amounts of tools that other systems just never produce

alfie horn I phrase it that Cuba is producing better athletes but not necessarily better ball players. Where at one point players were coming over w a full resume of facing Top world and almost pro competition now the best players get out very young. This can represent an opportunity if the youngsters get into a good program w better training & nutrition. Unfortunately I don’t think there is an obvious stud prospect currently in the National Series. However, Colas will be in high demand, Yoelqui Cespedes as well and there are a lot of talented youngsters in the minors, I just don’t think any has a ceiling near Moncada or Robert but in fairness few prospects from any country have as high a ceiling as those two.

@@Alf763 I never really replied to your actual question...Puig was an outlier in ability, I would say the only comp during his time in Cuba for pure athleticism may have been Yoenis Céspedes both obviously have their warts in keeping them focused on fundamental baseball. I think it is irrefutable that Jose Abreu has been the best player to come over during this run, and make no mistake in physical stature he is an outlier as well but his balanced personality and approach at the plate has been his greatest strength...if say a Luis Robert can find that balance between his obvious tools and being a bit more polished less raw as a baseball player I think we will see a superstar.
