I have a feeling it’s for the timbre of sound. They don’t use trumpets but instead they use cornets. I think the reason is why is to get a brighter sound.

The ‘animal’ that is the British Championship Section Brass Band in full flight. Nothing like it in ‘amateur’ music making anywhere.
They are professionals.
But it’s amateur music making. They aren’t paid for what they do with this band. That makes it amateur.
They are paid but don’t make a living from just playing.

British band band set up is always like this. French horns are reserved for orchestras.
