The Town walls of Clonmel would have been somewhat higher during the Cromwellian siege. The arches were designed according to the custom of the times, to facilitate the garrison's defence. A defender, armed with a pike or other implement of war, would be stationed there, ready to impale any attacker who came over. That was Cromwell's last foray in his Irish campaign as, like all other "little tin gods," his star was on the descent. In his abscence, the political landscape in England began to shift, and Parliament recalled him to London. Sound familiar?! By the way, the tower is the only octagonal one in Ireland.

Another great walk on a beautiful day. Some really amazing headstones. The arches were interesting. But those red doors on the church were beautiful. It’s said it represents the blood of Christ and those who pass through are protected from evil. Looking forward to the next and Irish eyes vids. ❤️🇺🇸

Hey Sue, a new viewer here. Thanks for showing those beautiful old Irish graveyards with such exquisite carvings and style, a truly lost art. It’s amazing to think our ancestors thought so much of their departed. I know they do today, but it’s not quite the same in my eyes. The attention to detail and artistic flair are truly outstanding! Hat’s off to you and Irish eyes for allowing us to come along with you both to these sometimes hidden jewels and a remembrance before time erases them forever! Can't say that I've seen an iron surround on a headstone before but, at the back of my mind, I do have a faint memory of perhaps seeing one or two in Clonmel's municipal cemetery, St. Patrick's. Iron railings around graves are quite common, though, and largely date from the 19th century. That reverence and awe for iron goes back to the end of the bronze age when iron was discovered and unleashed a new age of progress for mankind which hasn't stopped since. Unfortunately, the new power of iron hasn't always been used in the best interest of our species. Apart from that, up to and during Victorian times, it was believed that iron had great spiritual powers, and could even control the power of the dead in their graves. Iron railing around graves were not to cordon off the site of an interment or for a show of wealth, but to make sure that the dead stayed in their graves. It was quite common for Victorian coffins of the wealthy to have bands of ornamental iron attached to the lid and body of a coffin. And they weren't there for style!

The small buildings on the walls were for guards my guess would be where they could rest between the walking around the walls while they were guarding it.You will find in most of the old Church yards the oldest headstones are usually at the front.and on the sides of the church.I also believe that the ones with the crossed carved into them.Plain with no words or fancy will probably be the oldest ones in the church yard .Cannot give a date but I have never seen them before..But I am shown images of soldiers not modern poss Cromwell or before Simple stones.A lot of soldiers were just soldiers no wives just fought for the cause in those days.So no remembrance just a cross.Hope this helps .Some never got a headstone if killed in skirmishes just buried where they fell.Poor lads ..Fabulous churchyard Sue ,very interesting.I love the oldest ones the best.So much character.Love n Light 🥰

Thanks for this walkabout Sue. Amazing, as always, but the old wall and church tower had me mesmerised. Seeing the Co. Mayo on one of the stones made me snicker a wee bit!! When I married into the Mayo family, I was told they had good, strong Irish bloodlines. After a while I got into genealogy to help our son with a school project. Then I got serious and worked on our tree for over a decade, and had to tell the Mayos' they had no Irish ancestry whatsoever! Gawd, it went down like a ton of lead balloons. Deb.

So, the joker card is equal to The Fool card in a tarot deck. In tarot magic which is a form of "witchcraft" a Joker or Fool card nailed to a tree (particularly in a cemetery and usually to the wood of a Rowan (ash) tree or an Oak) is typically done to either bring about bad will upon "a fool" who did you wrong or to "pin" a troublesome spirit back into it's grave or a grave. I'm a bit perplexed by seeing this in Ireland as this type of folk magic is most often seen but not limited to the American south or the Appalachian mountains. I am aware that Appalachian people are often Irish or Scottish genetically speaking but I would guess there is an "American witch" running around Tipperary.

There is a link to an image of the stone but both that link and the contact link for the site are no longer working . The stone is described as "famous" on another site and I'd hoped it might be shown . . . Ah well , never mind.

As far as i know, Irish Roman Catholics did not own their own cemeteries and they had to be buried in Church of Ireland/Anglican graveyards among Protestants, until the Catholic Emancipation allowed them to have their own burial grounds🤔I think it was the 'Emancipation' which led to the establishment of Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin with the efforts of Daniel O'Connell✝
