When 'family' was said, the image of a man and his wife and children were shown. That is what was meant. 'Peasant' is anyone not directly under royal line. Mary was a lay person. Thus, peasant. I do not recall her being somewhere high up in society. She even had her child in a barn. However, while she was little on Earth, she became Queen of the Universe, and is mother of God himself. God chooses the littlest to be the greatest. By 'solitary life', it is shown at the end, that it is actually meant as 'single'. It's a cooler way of saying 'one individual/single life made this impact'. If you pay attention to the visuals as well as the narration, this stuff makes a lot more sense.
