  • There are several differences between African cultural practices and practicing Islam according to the sunnah. You'll notice this shortly after arriving to Gambia; however, there are general things I'd say most Muslim Americans appreciate about Gambia. In this video, I share my favorite things about Gambia from a Muslim American perspective.

Ukhti, you have touched a nerve for a lot of folks but it is what it is. The west (America in particular) is not conducive for Muslim family life. I will make a bold statement and say MOST Muslim countries are going to be better (including Gambia of course) than life in America. Many people won’t accept that but I have seen it, you have seen it and many others have and will so it. May Allah bless your family.

You are wrong. Look no problem migrating from America. It is the right thing to do BUT fatal error to condition that on ISLAM. Trust me you are for a shock that way.
GO TO GAMBIA AD AFRICAN BUT NOT AS A MUSLIM .
HOW CAN YOU OVERLOOK THE OBVIOUS?
MANY ON THE CONTINENT ARE TRYING DO AWAY WITH THIS YOKE..ISLAM AND CHRISTIANITY

@@anstaranstar you have the right to do away with whatever you want. Islam has been in West Africa since the 10th century and it’s not going anywhere. It will continue to grow with or without you.

Am not Muslim but the town that I am relocating is known as the Muslim center of the country. I have lives on and off that town to the point I know the prayers because like you said the call to prayers can be heard. I love being in the community. So much respect and love and invitation to celebrate with them during Idd as we invite them to celebrate with us any religious holidays we have . Check out Mombasa Kenya am sure your heart will smile.
Sis you don’t have to explain your choice in living in Gambia . You went without expectations, you took it as a different country with its own challenges and blessings. You are the few people that assimilate with a culture and take it for what it is. May your settling keep giving you more of what you desire.

BarakAllahu feek Sister for your Dawah to Allah(swt).
A Dawah for Muslims to make Hijrah(emigrate) from the Land of DISBELIEF to a Land of Islam.
This is a virtuous undertaking in Islam, as it can be the means by which someone goes to Heaven, by the Grace and Mercy of Allah(swt).
As Allah(swt) says in the Quran Chapter, The Women, Verse 97:
Indeed, those whom the angels take [in death] while wronging themselves - [the angels] will say, "In what [condition] were you?" They will say, "We were oppressed in the land." They [the angels] will say, "Was not the earth of Allāh spacious [enough] for you to emigrate therein?" For those, their refuge is Hell - and evil it is as a destination.
    Sahih International
So even if the Gambia was the most destitute place on earth, the fact that it is a Muslim country, a Land of Islam, it is worthy emigrating to it as the above mentioned Verse in the Quran is indicating.
The non-muslims amongst your viewers might think that you are "Romanticising" a comfortable life in the Gambia, but no, you are "Romanticising " something greater than that; something only a TRUE BELIEVER will appreciate.

Salaam my dear Sister and the family
Well said! There aren’t enough Afro Americans Muslims migrating to Muslim African States. And this is by design. The dynamics of non MuslimAfro Americans vs Muslim Afro Americans in the Gambia is telling. There seems to be strong adaptation problems with the former more so than the latter. You said it right: Afro American Muslims. Living in The Gambia are finding it easier due to the shared Islamic culture and adherence to the Qur’an and the Sunnah. Whereby non Muslim Afro Americans are finding it harder to adapt, because of the 400 year cultural gap. They don’t share the Islamic culture with the Gambian brothers and sisters.
I am originally from Compton, California and have lived in Morocco for two decades now. I discussed this phenomenon with our sisters and brothers who weren’t Muslim living in Morocco. They found they were less accepted. But the Muslim Afro Americans got readily accepted, in most cases married Moroccan sisters very fast. But non Muslim brothers and sisters cannot marry with Muslims due to Sharia Allah prohibitions. This is a severe disadvantage!
In the Gambia and Coast West Africa in general, non Muslim Afro Americans are called Toubab more readily than a devout Afro American Muslim. Because the former is more akin to the Toubab in dress, mannerisms, speech and attitude. He adheres to the religion of the Toubab as well.
Lastly, Afro Americans arriving in the Gambia and elsewhere are quite ignorant of West African history in general and The Gambia in particular. This is a shameful epithet and stinging indictment of the lack of preparation of our brothers and sisters arriving on the continent. Wa Salaam Sheikh Yahya

      Walaykumsalam sis,
Alhamdulilah, that's great he made it! May Allah make the visit easy and beneficial, Ameen. My favorite part of Gambia is Gunjur, although I don't live near there. It's in the countryside. We live in the city...
If you're looking for more of a convenient lifestyle with many stores nearby, then I would suggest Fajara or Bijilo areas (if renting). Senegambia would be good for this also, but that's a tourist area and rent will definitely be higher. Not sure if you're looking to purchase or rent here. Are you able to email me a few details of what you're looking for, so I can give my best recommendations for parts of town? Do you have children that would be coming too? If so, what ages? Email me sis: summersinafrica@hotmail.com

It depends on the location and facilities available in that particular area. A Good two bed room apartment may cost you between 7-10k Dalasis ($110-160) per month in places like Brusubi, Salagi, Kerr Serign, Bijilo. There are other cheaper places of less than the estimate I gave.

I hope I am not overstepping any bounds, but from the little I have gathered, I have detected that Western teens have difficulty assimilating with local Gambian teens. A lack of assimilation is a common theme I've seen played out for expats, particularly those who migrated from the West to The Gambia. Are there any cultural, language, or social barriers these Western teens face among their Gambian peers? Could it be a lack of relatability? Just curious.
    Thanks for sharing. 🇺🇸

I would like to give advice on this topic from my view as a Youth Coach from the Netherlands. It is very important to keep in mind that teenagers are struggling with forming their own identity and groups. So this age has it’s challenges but also a lot of opportunities, because they are more free minded than adults.
It really helps when adults organize gatherings for the youths based on what they want. Co creating nice activities and gatherings for them where they can help with ideas and organization. Giving them ownership by including them in the proces, so the adults can do the rest. It gives the youth a feeling of been taking seriously by adults and feeling safe in a new environment with new people.
Gatherings with food, sports and creativity are almost always a succes. Such as BBQ, picknick, soccer games, painting together, make up and girly things for the girls etc, outdoor cinema.
When you want 2 new groups from the same age to get to know eachother this could really help. Also respecting the cultural boundaries. For example: in Islam we don’t encourage free mixing between two genders. So there should be activities for only boys and only girls. The cultural differences between Western teenagers and African teenagers can be big, but there are definitely similarities and by organizing get togethers with them and for them they can really get in contact with each other in a easy way 😊
      Hope this helps!
