  • This is Part 1 of 3 videos providing a quick tour of the MOMSR/Reel2ReelTexas.com vintage sound recording collection belonging to Chris and Martin Theophilus. While not open to the public, it is hoped this collection will become part of a permanent museum in Austin, Texas. The Museum of Magnetic Sound Recording was founded in 1999 and has a mission of establishing a sound recording technology museum that reflects how audio recording has influenced music, broadcasting, film, video and science. Please go to momsr.org to learn more about the Museum. r2rtx.org/node/4
NOTE: This is only a brief overview/tour of the collection. We do not go into any detail, however wish to show the breadth of the vintage recording devices currently in the collection. The collection primarily reflects recording devices that have been available in the US, however, we continue to add international units and intend to expand that area.
Please take a look at Parts 2 & 3 of this series from Reel2ReelTexas.com

That RCA mic...the GOLD standard. Anyone in announcing who stepped up to that knew they were in the presence of greatness...even if uttering..."this is the National Broadcasting Company."

WOW! Quite a wonderful collection! I still have a TEAC X-7R, TEAC 2300-SX, Docorder & AKAI_1800 and an old SONY. This was the best sound that ever was! Thank you for putting this together for us to enjoy!

Most folks don't feel the need to own several different turntables, why is it that we R2R fanatics need to own numerous machines? I have thirteen (13) of them, and know that I will buy another if the price is right... *L* I ordered a small video camera yesterday, so hopefully I can attempt a video similar to this one, to share my collection with you good people.

Enjoyable collection! I happen to have an AKAI X330-D, which is very rare (kind of a prosumer machine from the sixties, relay controlled, 10” reels), and a Teac 35-2B with built in dbx, also not too common. Happy too see more of them are still alive!

This was a trip down memory lane. I am familiar with all of the tape decks in your museum having sold SMPTE Time Code generators/readers and synchronous control devices to the major recording studios in the us. At that time Studer was clearly manufacturing the best devices. Machines like the A-800 were built like Sherman tanks and with the bias and EQ calibrated to the tape of choice, a wide track, 30 IPS recording on the Studers and Revox machines were second to none sometimes not needing noise reduction via Dolby A, DBX, or Burwen. But many studios could not afford Studer and used MCI or Ampex 24 track machines.

Great collection. So glad that someone is doing this. I'm an electrical engineer and long-time (since 1958) R2R recording enthusiast, having owned many consumer units over the years including some models in your collection. Last and greatest of my R2Rs is an amazing sounding Tandberg TD20A. Garrett in Michigan

Very nice collection. Reel to reels were such nice pieces of equipment, now made obsolete, for the most part. I just acquired a couple from a colleague of mine that retired and moved away. I need to go through them and make sure they work well. One is an Akai GX-365D, and the other is a Teac A-7010. I also have a Teac AN-180 Dolby unit.

Reel to Reel is not obsolete believe it or not. Its still in a lot of studios today and the demand for it has skyrocketed in studios

The non-profit entity dissolved: In December 2017, after five years of working to create a permanent public non-profit museum, the Board decided we'd had given it our best effort and the non-profit was dissolved. Some of the significantly valuable vintage devices that had been donated to the Museum were purchased by the Theophilus permanent collection owners. Other donated items were sold to interested parties and the remaining funds donated to the non-profit "Swan Songs." The non-profit museum ceased to exist on December 31, 2017

Love the collection. The persistent lazy Susan wipe is distracting. Also, it’s a video about audio recording. Can we get a microphone that costs more than 20 dollars?

I just found a Pioneer RT 909 set out on the curb tonight (9/18/18). Cosmetically pristine but the pinch roller tires have turned to viscous grease. I was elated to see one in your collection. What years was this model produced? Thanks!

What no classic Tandberg? I used to be a service for Teac my personal deck is Tandberg TD-20A SE tweaked to a knat’s eyebrow. I also had the same Ampex 350-2 setup you have, but someone stole it. It had the flying cases and two AKG C-4 Condenser Mike’s. (Trying hard not to wish hell fire on that person). I did like the sound of the Revox B-77, I was service for those too. In fact I was service for everything there but the Crowns and Vikings. I had a pair of Altec Valencia’s and later built a pair of modified Klipschorns. Used a Revox A-77 mark 2 to record members of the San Diego Symphony with two Electrovoice Ribbon mikes. Ahh at 74 now, those were heady days. I also used to refurbish preowned studio equipment and boards. Scullys were nice. Handled tape like the Tandberg.

I have 5 Tandberg reel to reels. TD20A is a great machine. With a simple mod I made my low speed 1/4 track TD20A beat my Revox A77 2 track high speed. I own 21 reel to reel tape decks right now. Love to restore them.

I have a Tandberg 64X which I recently restored. I used it for thousands of hours in the late 60s and early 70s. It cost me a month's pay in 1968 when I bought it.

I have a Tandberg 9100X. Not on the level of a TD20 but it sounds fantastic to my ears. Was surprised to watch a video on YT a couple days ago in which the narrator claims the 9100 sounds every bit as good as a Revox.

    Hi,
I'm looking for a particular 10.5" reel-to-reel. I can't remember the make or model but it had a distinguishing feature. The reels would mount to arms which swung either "stored", 7" or to the 10" position. The pulleys on the arms were driven by steel wrapped belts &, of course, the adapters for 10" could be removed for 7".
Any idea the make and model?
    Take care everyone!
