I have the same picture on my wall - it's by the British artist Banksy. The song was written for the end of the Gary Oldman Dracula, which if you saw it you'll know gets right away from the romantic Christopher Lee style vampire and is pretty disgusting. I doubt whether Annie Lennox had been briefed on this or saw the film, as this is a different Interview with the Vampire style story, the vampire's endless quest for the loved one and that love continuing down the centuries. It's stunning when Annie Lennox sings it,, but this is stunning in a different way. This was recorded a few years back when Austin had had some problems with his throat - you can hear a slight blip in tone once or twice, and the transitions between chest and head voice are not quite as seamless as usual. But that only helps to bring out the heartbreak of the song. Austin makes a lovely vampire, condemned to live on but still tied to what humanity remains in him. This after all is what makes the vampire a tragic figure, that it is in some ways still human and mortal, but without the consolation of aging and forgetting. Thank you for reacting to this, one of my favourite Austin covers, and one that doesn't get much attention, probably because it's not on his channel.
The Rose was one of the things I tried to learn to play on guitar - I was not good at it but it's a gorgeous song. Do you know the Hound and the Fox version?
