I think what fundamentally makes Re: Rise so much better despite doing very similar things is that where Build Divers consistently asks 'what if the real world had consequences in an MMO?' which is... confusing, cart-before-horse nonsense, Re: Rise asks the much more compelling reversal of that question, which is 'what if an MMO started having unforeseen consequences in reality?' Re: Rise is exciting the same way reading about Eve: Online nullsec wars where people lose real money is; you're seeing how something that seems harmless on a surface level can have far-reaching, unsettling knock-on consequences. Build Divers, meanwhile, is about as interesting as reading patch notes in a Gundam-themed web browser, and as a result it feels like far less than the sum of its parts.

I'm not sure how I feel about it after all this time. I kind of don't want this series to turn into a fantasy series all its own but it kind of did. The power that allows for GP Duel and by extension GBN to exist is fantasical. Reiji already confirmed that there aliens from other planets and for god knows what reasons these planets are connected through earth via the existence of Gunpla.
By the time Divers gets a new series assumming they don't forget about Re:Rise or the Build Fight series entirely its gonna be really odd. Its just gonna be an off the wall fantasy series but instead of human colonizing space it'll be the mystery of other alien species and the origins of the El-Divers etc. etc.

@@Monty2289 I think you misunderstand: "Gundam build Divers" and "Gundam build Fighters" are set in two entirely different universes so the events happening in each series don't influence the events happening in the other.

A big thing I think all the Build series can do well, even if they don't always, is to give suit designs that didn't get much of a shot in their origin series for either budget or direction reasons a good action scene.
As bad as the original Divers is, I think it has the best example of that in bringing in the Devil Gundam for an early episode. The Devil Gundam is amazing, but a kung-fu show never knew what to do with it, it just existed as a dramatic backdrop for the most part. It may not have been in Divers for long, but at least Divers gave the Devil Gundam a fight where it actually... you know, fought.

  • @thepronoob4039

The original Gundam Build Fighters is great because it's not Gundam. It has little to no stakes and mostly has a fun tournament style of story telling. It is literally people playing a game. It's a breath of fresh air that Gundam fans at the time and even now can enjoy.
And in the same vein as the original Build Fighters, Re Rise is great because it's not a Build series. There's no fun loving genki protagonist like before. And as the story slowly unravels itself it becomes clear as day that there's A LOT of stakes. It hits long time fans of Gundam and the Build series alike unexpectedly. The story tackles some pretty heavy shit, PTSD of losing a loved one, how destructive war is and how it tears families and homes apart both figuretively and very literally at the end of it's first cour, what it means to have emotions and the namesake of the anime, the choice and chance to stand back up after falling into the deepest depths, to Re-Rise.
As some one who did not watch Divers prior to Re Rise, I honestly think that you do not need to watch Divers to watch it's sequel, like any good Gundam anime there's enough exposition dumps for you to get it. And for those who left with a bitter taste in your mouth after Divers, Re Rise is a phenominal sequel that not only tells its own complex and wonderful story but also recontexualized quite a lot of Divers and kinda gave it a point to even exist.
7.5/10, not as great as the original Builders but still one of the best Gundam animes in my humble opinion.

Build Divers only has 1 episode "worth watching" and it's the fight with Astray No Name. Re: Rise is worth watching and enjoyable. It was my experience when showing it to a friend that you can "oh, that's the main character from the prequel... he doesn't matter" your way through references to Divers and it won't ruin anything. Though around episode 22 or 23 of Re: Rise we agreed it would be better if the show followed the SPOILERS ... ... main villain "Darth Vader" stand-in from his journey, saw him get turned, then watched the series proper cast save him. My friend didn't think that character got enough time to get invested in... also thought he was way cooler. But I guess "Star Wars but Gunpla" might have an older target audience then Sunrise wants.

I always say: "The worst thing a piece of media can be is mediocre."
A really good show is, well, really good, and a really bad show can make for a fun watch with friends or a "what not to do" lesson. Mediocre and bland? You can't do anything with that except waste time.

Build Divers is sort of weird, Riku and his force are basically Background characters given MC privileges, their character designs and personalities are bland to the point where you'd think they're all the same, and my only reason for liking it is the designs of the gunpla, and even then there's only a few i like. Sarah Made no sense, Her species barely does, SHE does not. If EL-Divers were an anomaly, then why was she the only potent one to be a real threat to GBN? That would mean, by that logic, before the build decals were crafted, Every EL-Diver should've destroyed the game then and there. There's a lot about Build Divers 1st i can complain about, but i'd be here until tomorrow (Like i ever get off my PC). Re:Rise on the other hand, is genuinely fun to watch, Keeping in mind, it's still a show for kids, but follows more closely to how gundam stories work, while still being plenty goofy, it makes sense. Hiroto is fun to watch, granted, he acts a little boring at times, but given his background, it's forgivable. May is also fun, and she makes more sense as an EL-Diver who's trying to figure out what her world is and how people live in it. Kazami might be an idiot, but his growth was okay, he at least isn't as self-centered as before. Par's growth is, well, on par with Kazami, but he has made more of an improvement breaking past his barrier. And the Gunpla designs are all pretty good again, but i like more of them in Re:Rise than in Build Divers 1st, and the story in Re:Rise wasn't an enormous emotional roller coaster, but i still liked it more than the first show's "plot".

Re:Rise is worth buldozing through Build Divers. Just set the Build Divers episodes on English Dub and play them in the background while you do something else (like building Gunpla, for example). stuff like the AI Life forms (El-Divers as they are called in the show) or other things of import you'd need to know about from Season 1, are for the most part explained, and better in Re:Rise. non of which takes long due to how completely fucking empty S1 is.

Re:Rise was such a strange concept for a Gundam series that I'm honestly surprised it got made, but it made that work for it, it had me tuning in each week to see where they were going with it because I wanted to see where the weird plot was going. As for the original Build Divers, "basic" is the perfect word for it. The final arc was the only notable part of it and then only because it was so bad. "Let's kill this new form of life so I can continue playing muh videogame" was probably the worst moment of writing in the entire franchise to date that I've seen and I've watched Seed Destiny in its entirety.

I'd like to give a friendly reminder that GUNDAM BUILD SERIES IS GOING TO TURN 10 ON OCTOBER 7TH! MARK YOUR CALENDARS, FOLKS! 😆😆😆
Gundam Build Divers might be Build Series' weakest entry, but I'd argue that both Divers and Re:Rise's stories complete each other. Divers presented the concept of GBN and how people would react to the existence of El Divers, despite the story itself having varying degrees of success.
If anything else, Riku Mikami served as a small part of a larger whole that is the world of GBN, as well as one of the main driving forces that completes Hiroto Kuga's character later in Re:Rise. In other words, Build Divers is less about Riku and more about GBN (plot-driven story) whereas Re:Rise is about the individuals of said GBN (character-driven story)
With Build Series having its 10th Anniversary soon, I wish there would be a new crossover project that involves ALL of the protagonists and have them further explore Reiji's origins and the El Divers. Heck, having cameos from Gundam Breaker, Gunpla Builders, and Plamo Kyoshiro would be neat as a celebration of Gunplas.
If it were up to me, I wish there would be an Extreme Gundam variant in Build Series so that it'd goad Bandai into making and reissuing more Extreme Gundam kits since its also my favorite Gundam. 😆😂

  • @Monty2289
    @Monty2289 2 роки тому

Yeah they did jump the shark with GBN and Divers. So much to the degree where they enter the realm of fantasy equivalent to an actual fictional gundam universe. There really is no way there exists a game like GBN where you can eat food in it and that game is 100% committed to gunpla. Or that the game creates so much junk data it can create ELs. ELs mind you that can have their consciousness uploaded and reflected on to a doll. Re:Rise doesn't even scratch the surface of this. Just that a reacurring character are her handlers. But this has so many implication. Japan or any other government wouldn't let these things just hang about and play GBN.

I didn't know you got to this one yet! Stupid unsubbing... Anyway, I concur a lot with some of the objective points and problems with Build Divers. That said, of all Gundam entries that could've been my first, it wound up being Build Divers. Blame it on timing, honestly. I was giving 40k the very last heave ho it would ever get and was looking elsewhere for hobbies before finding Gunpla. Soon deciding to give the anime a shot, I wasn't picky. Any Gundam anime would do, and Build Divers was simply one of the most accessible entries at the time. Perhaps some of my own thoughts on high-tier competitive gaming affected my perception of Build Divers for the positive, and I'll admit that, particularly with Kouichi. The burnt-out retired old(ish) loner who used to be really good before his passion ran out? I feel ya', dude.
Honestly, I _do_ think Divers hits that G Gundam sort of vibe, though certainly not as cleanly. Where I think Build Divers picks up the slack is the earnestness, which it has in spades. As _DUMB_ as some of the lines are (I enjoy riffing on them too, especially "NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS, NO ONE WILL EVER DENY THAT WE ALL LOVE GUNPLAAAAAAAAA!"), the English dub actually plays it straight, which is what Build Divers desperately needed to work. Be honest, how many times have you unironically done the entire "THIS HAND OF MINE IS BURNING RED! ITS LOUD ROAR TELLS ME TO GRASP VICTORY!" speech? Same idea. They could've given it a Ghost Stories quasi-abridged spit shine, but they didn't. The English team respected it, as little as it may have deserved. Build Fighters is definitely the better entry. In a weird way, Build Divers made me empathize with the long-suffering Yugioh GX fandom. Like Divers to Fighters, GX also wasn't _that_ bad (maybe a little low-stakes, immature and sophomoric, but not _bad_ per se), but the original Yugioh was just such a hard act to follow.
Speaking of things that are better than Build Divers, ReRise. Oh God, ReRise. Let me put it this way: ReRise makes me feel as good as Seed makes me feel bad. There are very few pieces of media I latch onto like ReRise. The first Avengers movie. Into the Spider-Verse. Beast Wars. Avatar: the Last Airbender. Digimon Tamers. I have no problem inducting ReRise into that extremely exclusive pantheon of genuine quality writing. It's that good, and _definitely_ make it worth sticking it out through the more banal Build Divers. During cough-cough era, I was there for ReRise's initial run as it aired, and it was a blast. If I _had_ to pick on it for something, I'd say it pulled the "side character says something innocuous that gives MC an epiphany" trick a few too many times, and I had to _work_ to find that one, and it might just be a me thing where I'm too old for the intended effect. Plus, that type of scene was how we got the "gonna' save the world with your gunpla?" speech, a scene I wouldn't trade for anything.
I don't know about you, but thematically, ReRise is the perfect Gundam for me. Gundam's peace-at-all-costs-even-when-hilariously-irrational message has always been hit or miss for me (notably irrevocably tainting the otherwise outstanding _Iron Blooded Orphans_ series, but that's for next time...), but ReRise demonstrated a real fight-or-die mentality with its combat. None of that give-peace-a-chance crap here. Tell the bad guy to "give peace a chance" for once. (And they try, to their credit.) Even at the end, Alus was still understood. Despite all the deaths ol' Walter Peck caused, you could understand why, given the information he had access to, he would go about his plan of purging Eldora. And yet, though understanding was had between all parties by the end, that _didn't_ mean Alus didn't have to pay for what he did. ReRise has one of the healthiest approaches to combat since G Gundam. Destruction can be necessary to protect yourself from those seeking to annihilate you, and yet it is also something that must be meted out with care and wisdom. Failing in _either_ direction can result in devastation and sorrow that you'll have to live with. The allure of cutting and running and letting others die because you're afraid to stand up for them is powerful. It's difficult, even frightening, to choose to fight for real, especially if you have a long life ahead of you, and doubly so if you've barely survived a similar scenario. The lives you took, or even _almost_ took, can haunt you long after the war ends, even if you won. And even if you do come out the other side, you don't quite know for sure if you did the right thing in the immediate aftermath. And yet, you must still move on. No fight will wait for you to be ready for it. It will happen whether you're there to stop it or not. All of those ideas and more are present in one form or another, especially in ReRise's latter half. What Gundam typically says about war and its brutality is all true, but sometimes you must fight regardless because the consequences of _not_ fighting can sometimes be worse. "War is a terrible thing, but the _most_ terrible thing is the one who considers nothing worth fighting for, whom must forever be kept safe by the sacrifice of those better than themselves." But for once, the cast of a Gundam series _isn't_ castigated for choosing to fight... unless you count their punishment being saddled with that sadly butt-ugly megazord of a final suit. Awesome AF moment for both plot and characters. Terrible janky kit that barely holds together. It's like the exact opposite of the MG Freedom 2.0.
Probably one of my favorite aspects of ReRise was, of all characters, Kazami. He starts out as this obnoxious blowhard that annoys everybody on both sides of the fourth wall, but it was initially in the service of trying (and failing) to be this big cool guy hero. But where Kazami worked is that trying to be a hero shows a deep, if unrefined, nobility to the character, something I noticed VERY early in his arc and hoped would be built upon. ReRise had no problem running Kazami into the ground when he was being a toolbag, but it was all in service of allowing him to shed his weaknesses, insecurities and _especially_ misconceptions about what being a hero is really about. It was such a dramatic change for the character that I'm not even gonna' get on his case for the whole implied furry thing. He did good. After all the grief I've given to the handling Flay Allster (who also does many very bad things that annoyed the viewers... in fact both wound up conforming to s3xist stereotypes, with Flay being a toxic manipulative th0t and Kazami being a braying arrogant chickenhawk), Kazami basically got the kind of arc I wished Flay had. While Flay was routinely denied any opportunity for self-reflection and growth to a baffling and frankly un-Gundam degree, Kazami got the kind of tough love that turned him into the kind of hero he himself would look up to. Kazami was a coming of age story that saw an out-of-depth dooofus refined into gleaming steel. Flay was leading a lamb to slaughter and claiming it's justified because the lamb was racist... against her slaughterers.

Build Divers was misunderstood by fans and misused potential by creators on same time.
    Pros:
MC: yeah, I bet you heard hundreds time over and over again, "MC was so boring", "friendship power" or "childish" but Build Divers surprised me presenting first (and only) beatable MC of Buildverse. He's not untouchouble and you can follow his advancement in progress.
Break Decal arc: first and only emphatizable story arc of entire Buildverse. Antagonist is truly cynical who hates new version and deeply loved old version in same time.
    Cons:
Furry characters : Its not my cup of tea, sorry.
SD Fans: I've been on this fandom since 20+ years and SD kits were only Bandai cared. Sorry.

Build divers suffers from the fact that its entire cast is a victim of accute idiotytis... quite tragic. The idea that the Administrations first reaction to the discovery of the first ever recorded, true and genuine AI (that is also capable of human emotion), is to erase it because a mmo is at stake... mind you an MMO that they could just restart on a new server infrastructure while making boatloads of cash of the scientific discovery of the century.. is absolutely idiotic. (just as idiotic as the decision not to simply ban the accounts of the build divers crew so they cant attempt to save their AI friend but aparantly no one who wrote this show actually knows what an administrator is capable of)
Also the entire show waffles on for allmost 90% of its entire runtime with meaningless filler that has absolutely nothing to do with anything.. only for in the last 3 episodes to remember that its suposed to have an actual plotline and cramming it all into said last 3 episodes.
Build divers overall is at the absolute bottom of the build fighter style anime series by far.

I disagree that Divers is necessary to understand ReRise. As you said, the story of Divers is generic, to the point where given a basic familiarity with common tropes and a vague premise of the show, you can extrapolate all necessary context to understand what you need to forReRise. I only ever watched fractions of Divers before postponing it to probably one of the last shows to tackle in my ever-shrinking Gundam backlog, and ReRise is easily one of my favorites in the franchise
