    First broadcast: 26 Mar 2014.
    Episode 11/12 To mark 250 years since William Hogarth's death, ceramics expert and self-confessed Hogarth fanatic Lars Tharp is determined to solve a mystery that has consumed his personal and professional life - the case of Hogarth's lost pug.
    In this unique shaggy dog story, Tharp explains Hogarth's obsession with this most characterful of breeds and the pivotal role it played in his life and his work. A canine odyssey that only examines one of his most iconic works of art, but leads us into a world of satire, salaciousness and secrets. From harlots and rakes to the shadowy machinations of the freemasons, Tharp's ultimate goal is to lead an appeal to the nation to help him recover a rare piece of long-lost Hogarth memorabilia - a precious terracotta sculpture of his beloved pet pug.

    I live near Chiswick, London, where Hogarth lived. There is a statue of him and his pug in his memory

    I have a whole set of these prints from 1832. The books themselves have come apart but the prints are in excellent condition.

    “The Pugs Progress”. From breathing to breathing problems....due to popular tastes. So sad.

      It's fascinating how much better Hogarth's pug looked than our own.Longer legs, more defined muzzle. We ruined a healthy dog for vanity breeding.

    I wish they left pugs like that, as with older Persian cats, before deforming their snouts. Poor things with breathing problems now, Awful.

    A = 1, B = 2....Z = 26 THE PUG = 20 +8 + 5 + 16 + 21 + 7 = 77 HOGARTH = 8 + 15 + 7 + 1 + 18 + 20 + 8 = 77. Now you know why he was attracted to a pug!
