  • American mezzosoprano Joyce Di Donato (as Dejanira) sings "Where shall I fly?" from Händel's Hercules, HWV 60.
    Aix-en-Provence, 2004.
Les Arts Florissants, conductor: William Christie.
    WHERE SHALL I FLY?
    (Dejanira, Recitativo accompagnato)
"Where shall I fly? Where hide this guilty head?
Oh fatal error of misguided love!
Oh cruel Nessus, how art thou revenged!
Wretched I am! By me Alcides dies!
These impious hands have sent my injured lord
    untimely to the shades!
    Let me be mad!
Chain me, ye furies, to your iron beds.
And lash my guilty ghosts with whips of scorpions!
See! See! They come! Alecto with her snakes,
    Megaera fell, and black Tisiphone!
    See the dreadful sisters rise.
Their baneful presence taints the skies!
See the snaky whips they bear!
What yellings rend my tortured ear!"

This video is proof that Handel certainly can be more than just park-and-bark stuff that fills a requirement on undergraduate voice recitals. DiDonato is a fabulous technician and she is always fiercely committed to the music and the drama. Fabulous stuff!!

@@mihordeadana2368 The most ridiculous thing I have read. Handel was the greatest composer of dramatic operas and oratorios of his time. Only he created the kind of dramatic recitatives "accompanied" that we are listening to. It is not an aria, but a recitative. Did you know? I don't think so, since you are ignorant. Nobody surpasses him. Think before you write stup1d things.

Exactly, Idaspe. The singing here is rougher than is usual for her, but it fits perfectly with the scene. She wanted to do more than just 'produrre delle note.' A lot of mezzos could do that.

Sono d'accordo con te. Cantare senza rendere il personaggio nella stessa pelle non è cantare veramente, ma produrre delle note. Questa interpretazione è magnifica, con le sue precisioni E le sue imprecisioni. Siamo humani... :o)

@xoxpenguinxox You'll need some backstory for this: When Dejanira and Hercules had just got together, a centaur called Nessus offered to help them cross a river, then tried to make off with Dejanira. Hercules shot him with a poisoned arrow, and the dying Nessus gave his blood-and-venom-soaked shirt to D., saying it had magic powers to stop H. from going after other women. Which it did, only not in the way she was hoping for. Here, D. realises her trying to keep her husband actually killed him.

Only Händel created this kind of dramatic recitatives during his time. Nobody beats him. Yes, it is a recitative "accompaniato", not an aria.

what you're missing by only seeing this aria is the flawless vocalism she displays throughout the rest of the oratorio. not that this is flawed. granted, she takes it far, but not unconvincingly. we need more exciting singing. eleanor steber-perfect vocalism it ain't, but terrifying it is.

  • @StandingRoom

Is Hyllus even supposed to be onstage for this scene, per the score/libretto? Not that I mind - the way he silently, desperately tries to help, or at least not make things any worse, is amazing. Toby Spence does "well-meaning but awkward" really well.

The production is ugly, but what a presence, what an intense vocalism, what a credible characterization by DiDonato! She knows how to sing Händel with near excellent technique and style and still be dramatic in the extroverted way people like nowadays. This is one of the best furious Mad Scene interpretations I've ever seen. Really terrifying, in the best sense of that word!
