- American mezzosoprano Joyce Di Donato (as Dejanira) sings "Where shall I fly?" from Händel's Hercules, HWV 60.
Aix-en-Provence, 2004.
Les Arts Florissants, conductor: William Christie.
WHERE SHALL I FLY?
(Dejanira, Recitativo accompagnato)
"Where shall I fly? Where hide this guilty head?
Oh fatal error of misguided love!
Oh cruel Nessus, how art thou revenged!
Wretched I am! By me Alcides dies!
These impious hands have sent my injured lord
untimely to the shades!
Let me be mad!
Chain me, ye furies, to your iron beds.
And lash my guilty ghosts with whips of scorpions!
See! See! They come! Alecto with her snakes,
Megaera fell, and black Tisiphone!
See the dreadful sisters rise.
Their baneful presence taints the skies!
See the snaky whips they bear!
What yellings rend my tortured ear!"
This is how I feel every day.
This video is proof that Handel certainly can be more than just park-and-bark stuff that fills a requirement on undergraduate voice recitals. DiDonato is a fabulous technician and she is always fiercely committed to the music and the drama. Fabulous stuff!!
@@mihordeadana2368 eh? Mediocre composer?
@@mihordeadana2368 The most ridiculous thing I have read. Handel was the greatest composer of dramatic operas and oratorios of his time. Only he created the kind of dramatic recitatives "accompanied" that we are listening to. It is not an aria, but a recitative. Did you know? I don't think so, since you are ignorant. Nobody surpasses him. Think before you write stup1d things.
@@mihordeadana2368 You don't know anything about singing or baroque opera or Handel. You don't know anything, so think about the nonsense you write.
Mediocre?😳
@@mihordeadana2368 Haendel est un des plus grands compositeurs. Dire le contraire est une ineptie.
Love the dramatic interpretation. I bet Joyce had so much fun doing this scene!
this is utterly, indescribably amazing....
Her vocal and emotional range is INSANE. DiDonato is so fierce in this video.
wuaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
joyci di donato es una de las mejores interpretes que e visto, ella realmente me traspasa su angustia en esta aria, ella se transforma totalmente para hacerla asi real , se me erizan los pelos con esto , gracias joyci y gracias haendel por hacer tan buena musica.
She crazy!! Seriously, a brilliant portrayal and excellent singing!! Brava!
Exactly, Idaspe. The singing here is rougher than is usual for her, but it fits perfectly with the scene. She wanted to do more than just 'produrre delle note.' A lot of mezzos could do that.
Hercules - one of the most underrated work of Händel at all ... not only fer this most thriling mad scene !
i heard it for the first time in my life when I came back home from disco at 3am. I got euphoria. for many years couldnt find who the composer was.
I'm listening her over and over, I love her, Haendel would be proud of her
suis handelien suis fous de haendel ♪♪♪♪ le rois du barok ☼
Same here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love her face and eyes at 1:09 when she shouts "Let me be mad!" This is pure madness.
Meraviglia. Brava, Joyce ❤️
Brilliant! Wonderful actress. Great voice.
Magnifique actrice et magnifique personnalisation ! Merci pour cette video.
Epoustouflant et magnifique ! Merci pour l'ajout !
Espectacular !!!!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Didonato: One cannot but crazely being in love with her!!! What a singer! What an actress! Just incredible for a girl coming from Kansas.
Brilliant performance!!!
FANTASTICO
cudowna interpretacja muzyki Haendla. Beautifull !
I keep listening to this on repeat, the strength of the rhythmic placement at 1:05 is amazing. She uses the music to move to her next position and then is just so in time it is crazy ! « Chain me ye furries to your iron beds »
Non-human performance. Fantastic!
GOD!!!!!!!!!
trop fort j'adore!
God... she always gives me goosebumps. Even if I'm not sure about some of the things she's doing vocally. Wow, just wow. This woman...
Who cares. The voice is our own tool!!! If we have the resources to play with it, let's do this!!
It also exists throat singing and a ton of other techniques. Why not be plural :D
Luisana Rivas haha I think your getting moved by Handel . Do do di Donato is a bit all over the place plus her tone is very bleaty and boyish it’s not phenomenal singing at all .
Triumphant and powerful!!

One word: WOW!
Perfect acting! I loved this! It is obvious that the voice quality will not be the same after all those movements and screams, but it is always pretty good! BRAVA!
impressionante ..... può un cantante osare tanto??? :-))
@xoxpenguinxox You'll need some backstory for this: When Dejanira and Hercules had just got together, a centaur called Nessus offered to help them cross a river, then tried to make off with Dejanira. Hercules shot him with a poisoned arrow, and the dying Nessus gave his blood-and-venom-soaked shirt to D., saying it had magic powers to stop H. from going after other women. Which it did, only not in the way she was hoping for. Here, D. realises her trying to keep her husband actually killed him.
Only Händel created this kind of dramatic recitatives during his time. Nobody beats him. Yes, it is a recitative "accompaniato", not an aria.
I think this: did you FEEL something? Then was good. Did you just hear some beauty music? Then was just that (and that's not enough for barroque music!!!). :o)
Available on DVD and Blu-ray !
BelAirClassiques didn’t believe you first because this was quite old performance. but after searching on Amazon, Voilà !
thank you for a notice !
That's the British tenor Toby Spence. He's playing the role of Hyllus, the son of Dejanira and Hercules.
GOD! I' m scared! xD
This is actually from Paris! Palais Garnier!
WONDERFUL performance...... heart breaking
She would make a great Salome
what you're missing by only seeing this aria is the flawless vocalism she displays throughout the rest of the oratorio. not that this is flawed. granted, she takes it far, but not unconvincingly. we need more exciting singing. eleanor steber-perfect vocalism it ain't, but terrifying it is.
Is Hyllus even supposed to be onstage for this scene, per the score/libretto? Not that I mind - the way he silently, desperately tries to help, or at least not make things any worse, is amazing. Toby Spence does "well-meaning but awkward" really well.
I love you Joyce, but prima la voce
jajajaja..Boring? jajajajaja. I agree with you. Shiving ;)
My last names donato too:P tehheee
Does anyone know the name of the younger man with her on stage?
LaBartoliLover Toby Spence
Wow, such a great performance of dear Joyce. She's really a queen of baroque - but this production ?! It's ,well, it's a bit strange...

Girl from The Ring (movie) at 249
she is CRAZY!! ;P
The production is ugly, but what a presence, what an intense vocalism, what a credible characterization by DiDonato! She knows how to sing Händel with near excellent technique and style and still be dramatic in the extroverted way people like nowadays. This is one of the best furious Mad Scene interpretations I've ever seen. Really terrifying, in the best sense of that word!
Magnificent production ! One of the best Hercule I have ever seen !
You can so tell it's French inspired.. haha all that black. and minimalism and whatnot.
[i don't really know what i'm talking about ;-)]
Belle performance.... un peu hystérique... et belle interprétation
Ses basses sont un peu aigres...
That isn't true, and furthermore is completely irrelevant.
I don't like this expressionistic approach
