  • Delving into the historically complicated human relationship to divinity, Alan Watts describes the trap of separateness.
This series is brought to you by the Alan Watts Organization and Ram Dass’ Love Serve Remember Foundation. Visit Alanwatts.org for full talks from Alan Watts.
In this episode, Alan Watts explores:
The sensation of our own existence
    Jewish Christian mythology
    Identifying with the tribe
Universal law and the roots of justice
Freud and the energies of the psyche
Man as a product of nature versus the supernatural
The idea that we were all subjects of a divine king you might say was a political model based on the organization of the great city-states of the ancient near east. That image, you see, has absolutely haunted Western man throughout his whole development because he has felt that he is in the universe on probation and sufferance. He doesn't quite belong here." - Alan Watts
    About Alan Watts:
A prolific author and speaker, Alan Watts was one of the first to interpret Eastern wisdom for a Western audience. Born outside London in 1915, he discovered the nearby Buddhist Lodge at a young age. After moving to the United States in 1938, Alan became an Episcopal priest for a time, and then relocated to Millbrook, New York, where he wrote his pivotal book The Wisdom of Insecurity: A Message for an Age of Anxiety. In 1951 he moved to San Francisco where he began teaching Buddhist studies, and in 1956 began his popular radio show, “Way Beyond the West.” By the early sixties, Alan’s radio talks aired nationally and the counterculture movement adopted him as a spiritual spokesperson. He wrote and regularly traveled until his passing in 1973.

What really surprises me is that I only discovered Allan Watts, by accident, two years ago and I had genuinely never heard of him prior.

There are no accidents. There is no such thing as an effect less cause, or a causeless effect. When you are truly ready to learn, a teacher will appear.

Sometimes it's hard to believe he's been dead for 50 years. His work and belief in miracles seems to transcend death.

And yet his teachings should be taught in *ALL* schools and homes growing up.
P.S. There are no accidents. Only synchronicity.

You're so lucky for having a dad like Alan Watts- if all human males had even half of the (divine masculine) that your dad had within him, this world wouldn't look like a human septic tank- I really wish so very much I could have attended at least one of his lectures- but I was born in 1966 in San Jose California- too young.
I, as well as may others are sooooo great full to u, for putting together all of his works, and sharing with the rest of us 😊

Thank you for doing what you did with your fathers work. I was a waitress in the early 80s and I had two women customers who brought me a father’s work on Cassette! I loved his work so much. When UA-cam came along, I found your father again. His work always has resonated with me and shaped the totality of my views today. Peace love and joy♥️💯🙏

Alan Watts, a British-American philosopher, writer, and speaker, often discussed the concept of being in the way of oneself. While I can't provide a specific quote from Alan Watts on this topic, I can offer an interpretation based on his teachings and ideas.
Being in the way of oneself refers to the ways in which individuals hinder their own growth, happiness, and fulfillment by imposing limitations, holding onto negative beliefs or patterns, and resisting the natural flow of life. It suggests that our own thoughts, actions, and perceptions can create obstacles that prevent us from living authentically and experiencing the fullness of life.
According to Watts, individuals often get caught up in self-created barriers such as rigid expectations, attachments to outcomes, fear of failure or judgment, and a constant need to control or manipulate their circumstances. These self-imposed limitations can restrict our potential and prevent us from fully embracing the present moment.
Watts encourages individuals to let go of excessive self-consciousness, self-doubt, and the constant striving for external validation. He emphasizes the importance of surrendering to the inherent interconnectedness and spontaneity of life, allowing ourselves to flow with the rhythm of existence rather than resisting or trying to force outcomes.
By being in the way of oneself, one inhibits personal growth, restricts possibilities, and creates unnecessary suffering. Watts invites individuals to cultivate a deeper understanding of themselves and their own patterns of thinking and behavior. Through self-awareness and self-acceptance, it becomes possible to release self-imposed limitations and align with the natural unfolding of life.
Ultimately, being in the way of oneself is an invitation to let go of self-imposed obstacles, embrace the present moment, and live authentically with a sense of freedom and openness. It encourages individuals to explore their own beliefs, question their conditioned patterns, and discover a more harmonious way of being in the world.

Thank you, Mark, for sharing these wonderful gems of your Dad speaking. This particular talk speaks loudly to me and is in line with my way of thinking concerning the beginnings of religious thought. Makes perfect sense, simply modeled on what happens with humans ruled by a king. I actually feel like why didn't I see that? It's just too simple and I want to complicate it or think that it is complicated? For some reason King Henry VIII comes to my mind, must be the first king I heard much about. He certainly acted like he was God.
This may be my favorite of all Alan's talks I've heard thus far. I've been listening to him approaching five years. I love that this talk speaks directly to the fallacy of religion. I want to believe that more and more people are coming to grips with that truth. Thanks again, Mark.
