If I was a dev of this game (or any game), I'd def watch TactiCat's playthrough and take notes. Of things that need change/improvement. I hope they do.
i keep all mine off...becouse the region give me same material more then what i always need whit train.. only things i notice balance a bit strange but i miss last 3 research of last cyrcle still... i use mine only few years in early game before have road/train in region but at that point is pointless..saddly becouse is fun to watch, i need try use them more nice video, railroad u can build the train if u complete rail whit outside map and efficenzy of region go like 100 plus
oil production is much to low and on my normal playtrough on the second map i have on map only 100.000 coal and couldn't fit it with gas generators because very low oil production
I believe the railroad system can be used with the facilities that have two entrances like the smith and lumbermill

I don't know about you, but that conveyor belt system is very annoying to install
