I seem to recall he attacked the USSR to use that as a point in his favour when negotiating with the British. Unfortunately for him, the British preferred Stalin over Hitler, so that didn't go so well.
He also adored the idea of huge battles with huge casualties (the Schwerpunkt doctrine, IIRC), hardly a strategic mindset.

You’re only forgetting that the Western Allies landed with over 4million men in France alone, in 1940-41-42 the allies fought the Afrika Korps and the Italian army in Africa therefore forcing the Axis powers to send more troops away from what could’ve been the necessary force to actually beat the soviets. Let’s not forget that from 1942 onwards more than 60% of the Luftwaffe was deployed in the Western part of Germany because of constant allied bombing therefore taking off pressure from the Soviets, then let’s not forget the huge amount of war materiel, food, and money the soviets received from the US alone. Then let’s talk about how the Allies prevented the whole Italian army from supporting the Wehrmacht in the east, Operation Husky and after that the Italian campaign, the valiant struggle of the Royal Navy and later on the US Navy to keep the Atlantic ocean open for trade and lend lease to the soviets. Now let’s also talk about how the Imperial Japanese Army could’ve attacked the Soviets from the East and Siberia if… they didnt attack the Western Allies, the battles for Burma, Singapore, Indonesia, and the Pacific region in general, the Kwantung Army in 1944 still outnumbered the Soviet far eastern army despite the Japanese fighting the Chinese and the Allies in the Pacific. Imagine if the Japanese only had to focus on China and then join their Axis partners for the invasion of the USSR which they would’ve gladly done so since the Japanese hated the soviets. The Soviets my dear friend were lucky: 1)They had only one front, and they didnt even have to fight the full might of the Axis since a lot of Wehrmacht troops and Axis allied troops were engaged by the western allies. 2)The western allies helped the soviets with lend lease and money as well as food which was scarce.3)The western allies had to fight both the European Axis forces in Europe and Africa and the Asian axis forces in Asia and the Pacific area, the US actively fought in 3 fronts (Asia, Europe when Overlord happened and Africa during Torch and after that the Italian front) if anything, the US carried the Allies and the Soviets to victory my dear russian bias friend. Dont forget.

In these hard times where wars were waged I think for the simple private, gemeiner, soldat or samurai it was never a question whether to rush into enemy's bayonets. It was an order and order was not to be objected. Those without option were the real heroes to be praised. Thus we dedicate anthems like these not to the self-deluded leaders with doomed ambitions who threw millions of troops but to the pawns: the soldiers, air-fighters, lieutenants, generals that gave their lives not in vain.

He tried to make peace with the British, they turned him down. It was only his insistance on poetics and on 'beating Napoleon' that made him attack Russia without dealing with England.
He trusted the Italians (they used to be a lot better) and he did try to bail them out, he won Greece for them and tried to get Africa but the allies brought simply too much.

Well many countries they fought were fractured, but well... They outlasted Carthage and Egypt, so they musta been doing something right.
And even so no matter how fractured those countries were, you need to really know a thing or two about warfare to keep on winning them.

  • @Namelessthe3rd

I probably should have expanded a bit before posting the previous (GJ me).
A small nation may be able to tenaciously defend itself, but any country can do that (small ones are just normally either better, or already conquered). The general example results in a small country getting utterly swarmed by better equipped, more numerous 'rich' armies, such as the Poland-Germany and (really) Germany vs France bouts in '39.

So in Europe, the Soviets did do most of the work, but in Asia they barely did anything, just piled on in the tag team.

I think the war was touch-and-go already, winter was just enough to slow the Germans and give the Russians a tad of breathing room...
And Hitler may have known a lot about GRAND strategy, ie-managing of an entire armed forces, but I think his micro-strategic and tactical knowledge was slim... He put too much restriction on the otherwise highly versatile Heer.

I wouldn't say they have never been good fighters...
I mean, the ruled over half of Europe at one stage...
And yeah, he made many mistakes against Britain. He probably could have... Really looking at the circumstances should have won the war.

The British were not that useless. Even without the army they had the home army. And while this was not exactly a force to be proud of, the entire Royal Navy was standing guard over the coast.
I feel that whatever the germans could have got through that blockade woulda been mopped up rather fast...
And god knows he cocked up the east something chronic.
Leningrad, 6th Army, Moscow, his timing of Barbarossa.

It's ironic that only the Mongol hordes of Asia, were able to conquer Russia. The ,,Gran de Armê'' and the Wehrmacht couldn't conquer Russia.Only 2 men didn't know that it's cold in Russia when it's winter, once Napoleon and once Hitler.

Indeed, the Italians had made some pretty serious blunders, but I feel that he woulda been at least slightly confident that the Italians could handle Greece... I mean, no offense, but it was Greece...
You had to fail pretty hard to be as big as Italy and not be able to take on Greece. David vs Goliath that was (and poetically, turned out similarly to)

Well acually they didnt at that time thare was no such thing as Russia.
The large Area ( what today we know as European Russia, Ukraine and Belarus) was known as The Land of the Rus.
They conquered the various Kingdoms, Republics and Merchant Republics of the Region also most of these nations where also on the Enemy of my Enemy basis as well they did not get on that well.
The Mongols simply devided the nations and annexed them one by one.

whilst there other gain Albania didnt even have a standing Army.
The Italians have never been good fighters.
I think Italy had its uses prior the war it backed Hitler it Munich and ( eventually) accepted the Anhschluss plus they signned the Anti-Comintern Pact only of only three the other two of course being Japan and Germany.
Hitler made Several mistakes durring the war with the British.
First he stopped his Armies when the BEF was pulling out of Dunkirk he should have pushed on..

we didn't need to fear or worry about germans that much until mid 1943 because japan was a bigger threat at the time, we were basicly fighting japan in the pacific by ourselves (china dosnt count, australia did help a lil but not much) and although we didnt lose as many lives but we did have as many major victories as the Soviet Union but keep this in mind Britian would have been crushed if America didnt go to war and russia halting the germans at moscow that was all thanks to the bad winter.
