      @@neinsager3236 Haha i'm in the same boat. Went skiing for the first time last season after watching a few videos and got humbled (I didn't account for the part where you are literally sliding down a mountain XD). But I've done a lot of research since then so hopefully you and i both will be carving like pros this season

    A good instructional video should demonstrate the wrong action and the result it leads to, then demonstrate the correct action and result. Not just a list of several mistakes and then interspersed with carving videos that look pretty but don't have much to do with the problem in question.

    Carving is easy when you are at a level where you can just point the skis down the hill and ski straight :)

    I find instructions of ski instructors not that useful since they always hide most important information for skier that wants to improve (not on purpose but they forget to mention since it is second nature to them). I've been teaching my wife to ski and always told her that skiing is like jumping from one leg to another but with a lag. After 5 days she started carving and now after 3 years she's almost good as me. She said to me that my way of explaining was important for her since instructor gave her explanations that she could not comprehend correctly. I hope this will help someone. Kind regards.

    The failure to describe “Upper and lower separation” in carving mean I give you a D-. I did note that you DO upper and lower separate. So why not mention it?

    It takes way more than putting a ski on edge to make it and you turn. Also, you don't TEACH someone how to ski by saying the word Pressure! Pressure that you Feel during a turn is a natural byproduct of gravity combined with a braking action. Stand up! Jump Up! When you land you will feel pressure! Will saying, "Create Pressure" teach you how to Jump Up? Pressure is created by balancing on one ski and allowing it to make a turn. You are falling down the hill, but the turning ski is decelerating that movement.
    No matter what ski you are on, your weight distribution along the length of the ski determines the radius of the turn. More weight of the tip, the tip bends more. Weight on the tail, the tips won't bend enough.
    1:18 What is demonstrated here is one of the worst things to show skiers, right after Snowplow Turns. He is demonstrating the ridiculous move of "Tipping." When he Just Tips his knees over, his weight transfers to the inside ski. Is that where you are supposed to be in a turn? Stand up. bend your knees to the Right. Which foot is your weight on? Skiing is EZY but it requires the ability to Think! You don't make your legs Look Like they are in a turn by focusing on your legs. You position your upper body back into the fall line and get off your downhill foot and balance on your uphill foot. Your body will continue traveling down the slope while your skis are still traversing it which changes your length angle which rolls your skis over, so they make the next turn.
    To make a hard carved turn where your leg angle is very steep, think of this. You are standing next to a Barstool to your right, and you want to rest a Cheek on the edge of it. Take your weight off your right foot, lift your right cheek and set it on the edge of the stool. By taking your weight off your right foot, you are balanced on your left foot. By lifting your right cheek, you are forcing your upper body to stay vertical. By moving your cheek to the right and setting it on the edge of the Barstool, you are creating the leg angle that rolls your skis over. You think about a turn from your Eyes down, not from your feet up. The end result is what happens to your skis. If you want to be a ski racer or at least Look Like one, that's what you do. Not "Tip" your knees.
    Do Not, under any circumstances, Just roll your ankles over by bending your knees sideways. My work is done here. I can't watch any more.

      I like the barstool example. I heard so many times "roll you knees and ankles".... While just rolling knees does not work for me, I've seen people that can do it on slow speeds, short turns and it does look like they are just rolling their knees.

    • @JB91710
      @JB91710 2 роки тому +1

      @@handleby The skis are designed to change direction instantly when they are put on the slightest edge. by just moving your knees to the side you are putting your weight mostly on the inside ski instead of the outside ski. Stand up and try it. With your weight on both or the wrong foot, the skis can't bend enough to make a tight radius turn which is what you want to control your speed. ""roll you knees and ankles"." is like rotating the steering wheel in your car with your elbows instead of your hands. The car will turn but it won't be safe or pretty.

      Good tips, JB. I have been skiing 54 seasons, comfortable running double-blacks across the US / Canadian west or east, and I never heard the barstool analogy. There’s always room to learn a new metaphor in ski technique.
