Mason Williams and Tommy Emmanuel - Classical Gas

- Mason Williams, the composer of Classical Gas himself and Tommy Emmanuel the greatest guy on acoustic strings!!!!!! LEGENDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I do not own the rights to any part of these videos....
The difference between a man who has a real feel for the music and wants to express it ... And another who wants to show off the virtuosity of his playing abilities.
No people play like this today. Simply wonderful!!!!!!!
I think what a lot of people are missing here is that Tommy's version is meant to be a showpiece. He has hundreds of other songs that show soul, feeling, what have you.
His intention for this piece was to make it louder and faster.
Don't get me wrong, I prefer Mason's version over Tommy's but give Tommy some credit for his arrangement too.
Marvelous. One of the loveliest songs ever
I love and respect both. If you ever see Tommy Emanuel do it in person, I don’t think he ever does it the same twice, he throws different songs in, changes up the order, it’s amazing how fast he thinks guitar.
That IS the peak of guitar playing I doubt even in 200 years anyone could be that good , he a time machine figuratively and literally, he can play anything , ANYTHING!! I'd like to hear him play "Diary of a Madman" that would be scary.
half a century later is still raises goose bumps.
Simply....amazing!!
Love Tommy Emmanuel's version of classical gas. But I grew up listening to the original version by Mason and I always thought how beautiful the Song is The prize goes to the composer of this song. For creating it yes sometimes Interpretation are better than the Original version. People say that about Jimi Hendrix little versus Stevie ray's little wing come on Stevie ray never wrote the song yes he did a marvelous job on it but again the prize goes to Jimi Hendrix the composer everybody forgets about the composer.
When this came out in '68 or so, I fell in love immediately, no question. Still love it.When I heard Gabriella Quevedo's version, I decided to learn it. It is her version of Tommy Emanuel's version. And then I heard the amazing Sungha Yung's version and it was just in between, not too wild like Emanuel's but just right. I'm staying with Gabrielle's version. It took many months to learn but worth it.
wow why are you not famous INCREDIBLE display of guitar
Mason and Tommy together present a beautiful rendition of 'Classical Gas'....and I love it!!
Tommy's interpretation was great...He does have to play the parts of a multi piece ORCHESTRA WITH JUST HIS GUITAR! Mason gets all the props though for writing it.
Unbelievably good!
@MUSICLOVEROK I will agree about Mason, I have everything he ever put to LP or CD.... He did so much with TV as you stated... I am kinda miffed that he did not write MORE Music.. Mason is the reason I picked up a guitar, and as was his my first was a Stella...I even talked with Glen Campbell on Fox News about Mason.. There's room on my guitar for Mason, but Tommy's will hopefully be on it Thurday night when I see him... Cheers to Mason
Best Radio Bumper music ever!
haters hate. he is brilliant. Clapton even played this song.
Clapton may have played it. In his living room, on a party or something like that. He never recorded it though. So there's no way of telling until a witness testifies that he did :)
hijothema
Exactly. The version often attributed to Clapton is actually Mason Williams. The power of the Internet. Someone mistakenly, or intentionally, attributes a performance to the wrong musician, and millions of people take it as "gospel".
Olen Soifer
I found this on the Wiki about the possible cause of that mix-up: 'There is a common misconception that "Classical Gas" was composed and originally performed by Eric Clapton.[4] Clapton has never recorded a cover of the song. This misconception may possibly be attributed to the fact that Clapton was musical director of, and played much of the guitar music for, the feature film The Story of Us. The version of the song on the film's soundtrack is actually Williams's own solo-guitar re-recording of it, from his 1970 album Handmade.'

got me pumped
class trunp class.need i say more
Greaatttt
The great Mason Williams was a comedy writer.
I used to have a book of his poetry, which is hilarious.
"See them moose goosers, ain't they obtuse, some use a shower shoe, some use a boot"
Much fun bathroom time reading that little book. : )
I think Tommy enjoyed that more than anyone
I would NEVER buy a used guitar from Tommy!
i like both performances... for different reasons. Mason's version is a perfect composition. I remember watching it for the first time on the Smothers Brothers Show. It combined classical guitar with orchestra into a modern masterpiece. Tommy's version is s pyrotechnical spectacular version. It shows his virtuoso technique and talent. If I had to listen to one or the other every day, I'd take Mason's version because i like the mood. But there's no doubt that Tommy has done variations that make me watch and listen with awe!
WOW!!
There's instrumental with Mason and show-boating with Emmanuel
If you were a guitar player, you would appreciate the enormous difficulty involved in playing the song that way.
@@ekraszewski - I'm a guitarist (now retired). Appreciating the level of difficulty of a piece has nothing to with liking the piece itself. I'd give my left testicle to have half of TE's chops, but his arrangement of Williams's classic is much too fast and gives me the impression that he's boasting, "Look how fast I can play this piece" at the expense of the original's musicality just because he can. Just sayin'.
John D. Avery I respect your opinion. But I still disagree about him showBoating. I think Robert Ward’s comment below ours pretty much sums up how I feel about this version. As far as that is concerned, I like them both. As a guitar player myself,I am working on an arrangement that utilizes what I like best about MW and TE.
@@ekraszewski - You've got your work cut out for you. MW penned a classic instrumental and TE is a phenomenal guitarist. I sincerely wish you the best of luck and hope to hear it on UA-cam some day. All the best to you.
John D. Avery LOL. Everybody needs goals, right? Thanks for the encouragement.
uhm does tommy emmanuel only cover songs or also write some on his own..?
furthermore, this is not a strict cover. he plays it his own style, a lot of differences from the original.
Mason wrote this for a
full accompaniment with
orchestra ♪🎶
So what if you did not like the way he played it, still the best living guitar player on the planet. Just jealous wanna be players would critizize so negatively
+John McCarthy Paco Pena is still alive and tastes are subjective, Emmanuel isn't even in my top 10(he's great) but his style doens't have enough finesse for some of the pieces that he plays (classical gas inccluded, hes too heavy/hard on the strumming). That being said to each his own.
Absolutely Pena is a vituoso and of the best in classical music learned from sheet music. Tommy can sit and instantly play and add to anyones gig at anytime anywhere. Taking nothing away from great classical guitarists but I think that it is the versatility that makes him the best. Of course you are right about to each his own.
+John McCarthy Yep, Tommy plays with joy and energy, and his percussive and cheeky style is a great idea if you want to entertain a live audience as a solo acoustic player who doesn't sing. Tommy is 100% authentic.
@MyNameWasntAvailabl3 He has loads of songs of his own. Go look for his latest album, Haba Na Haba, with songs like Locomotivation, Ruby's Eyes, The Trails, The Fingerlakes and much more
I think Tommy is a great guitarist but I do agree with most commenters on here, his rendition of this classic is almost a bit sacrilegious, Classical Gas should be a journey and not a race. I feel the same about Tommy's Beatles medley, just to a lesser degree.
Continued: Masons being classical while Tommys is more entertainment orientated. To say Williams Vs Emmanuel is unfair to both performers. Each is a master of their own style so they are equal in my opinion.
imagine the guy on stage with guitar next to tommy be like.
You can take a classic guitar song and jazz it up or folk it up. I'll let you be the judge.
Nice take on it Tommy....but I agree, to busy....chill out :)
Sorry, I like the original better. Must be a generational thing. I was in high school when this came out in 1968.
I prefer the original too, but I'm a huge fan of Tommy's. Maybe it's because I heard the original first, but ironically, this is the first song I ever saw on youtube of Tommy Emmanuel.
I hope you are not forgetting that the original had an orchestral backing, while TE has to be the full entertainment.
The original is good and TE is good, but if you go to a BBQ and someone wants to play classical gas, who is better prepared?
Mason Williams would need to transport in the orchestra, TE would provide a complete show.
Sorry, but that's wrong, you don't need an orchestra backing you to play this song and sound great, have you listened to Williams pure acoustic version?
ua-cam.com/video/JeHgNqbdBKs/v-deo.html
Tommy plays it too fast
Loses the beauty of it
Maybe you wish no new rendition? Of course, you swallow revisionist history? Both musicians are incredible, and, are without peer. Maybe we should never try to attain any better? Modern indoctrination
tommy, overcooked
not taking anything away from Emmanuel, I prefer the orginal
Tommy Emmanuel's only hater l
V
I kind of hated Tommy's version
Tommy was a big fan of another guitarist (HBM) and with his group did this disco version:
ua-cam.com/video/caAjAFPRoUk/v-deo.html
Maybe this is just my Autism speaking, but the second one is far too harsh and spiky and painful even against my skin. The one played by Mason Williams is round and enveloping like a lover's arm 'round your shoulder.
Flesh coloured trousers? Not a great idea. From some angles in the long shots it looks like he's not wearing any :)
"Boomers" have Class.
You are just an idiot
Tommy doesn't just play guitar, he plays with it. Infinitely Beyond genius .
Mason's version is the original. You can't replace it. However, Tommy adds his own life, rhythm, character to it!! Both fantastic!
Mason wrote it, Tommy simply perfected it.
Mason Williams wrote one of the most beautiful melodies ever written, in Classical Gas. Tommy Emmanuel's interpretation is incredible.
Misleading title...I thought I would get to see them both playing together. Bollocks.
this is what Tommy does - he plays around and entertains the crowd - a virtuoso, sure, but he plays to say "wow, look at me", not to promote a great song. Give me the continuity of Mason's original any time. The orchestra gives it gravity while the guitar always returns to lead. I loved it at 15 and still do nearly 50 years later
100% agree he plays to give something to the crowd. 100% disagree that it’s a selfish “look at me.” He is incredibly humble, kind and wants to use his music as gift.
Mason created a fantastic song, and plays it fantastic. Tommy is just being like Ray Charles. “Just write a good song. I’ll make it mine.”
And not easy its flamenco? I think rgdsColin Scotland
Jesus can that man ol boy play, I hope he s well
Tommy’s brother Phil was even better I reckon. I saw him at the Beach Hotel in Byron Bay years ago. Your attention was going to happen.
Thank you for bringing up Phil, a master, loved him. 💕
I've had the good fortune to meet both of these talented gentlemen and I assure you they would be quick to complement the amazing talent of the other. Neither would engage in brainless trashing like many of the people in these comments.
Forget the arguments......we should be so honoured to witness the absolute mastery of two legends......🙏
Mason Williams every time.
Tommy is playing so hard the damn strings are ready to snap off. He's phenomenal. His performance is possible because of Mason. How blessed can we all be to hear music that stands up over the test of time
Your correct mate he played the heart out an Echo!
Jesus I couldn't do that just a man at work!!
Don't see the arguments here, BOTH versions exceptional in their own right, Mason's clearly as not only is it extremely well played BUT he is the original composer!
Tommy's while much more 'Flash' and full of technique is equally as good it just depends on personal tastes, for myself as a player whilst I can play the original I'd LOVE to be able to play Tommy's version.
Mason Williams is an iconoclastic creative genius, whose synthesis of classical technique with modern pop orchestration and musical idiom inspired the superhuman Emmanuel to arrange and perform it far beyond its original limits. Each accomplishment is laudable in its own right, as is Williams' epic poem referenced above.
Oh my goud.
When Tommy Emmanuel gets a hold of a piece of music he turns it every way but loose. Yes every song he plays is not static but dynamic. A genius and magician all-in-one. I would love to see him play in North Carolina sometime. One of the very best I have heard.
Still a great instrumental song!! 54 years later! Let's see anyone today match this!!
there is absolutely no question that Tommy could replicate the original version of this song. But why would he? Why would we want to listen to it again as it was originally performed? You can go dig out Mason's version for that. He's created something new and interesting for people to listen to. I would hate to live in a musical world where the only way we can be appreciated is if we duplicate the original performances. Tommy Emmanuel is a guitar players guitar player and one of the best guitar composers of our time.
While I enjoy and admire Tommy's rendition of this, nobody has to "dig out" Mason's original from anywhere. It's still getting fairly regular airplay on radio stations all over the planet, half a century later.
because some songs are so perfect that any other version will sound inferior. This piece for example is technical master piece but its inferior to the simplicity of of the original.
Yup
Thommy is not replicating. He is interpreting. Listen! Timing, expression , acoustic tempor all Thommy.
@@bsfighter4721 You do realize you are in severe agreement with the original post, and are apparently attempting to argue with it, right? And it's Tommy, not Thommy, I'm pretty sure. Just sayin'.
Glen Campbell did a awesome version of this as well
I have seen both performances live. Mason said “when you have a hit, you gotto play it” and it was great. In a guitar camp, Tommy played it for us. Tommy played it because he loves Mason’s song, and he said that he played his version for Mason and Mason loved it. A master piece, with a great performance by his composer and a great performance by somebody who made a great arrangement. Both great, as simple as that!
I like musicians that let the music speak for itself rather than dazzle you with virtuosity. Music is not a competitive sport though many are viewing it like that these days for some reason. I think many guitarists that do instrumental covers of popular music add TOO MUCH! If it's a good piece of music, it needs only the melody and the chords (harmonization) with maybe a little "flavoring" and spicing up etc. Many times, less is more.
I've owned cars in the past that didn't go as fast as those fingers!! Absolutely sensational. Thank you.
As much as Mason's version being the original! I would love to hear him do it as Tommy has!
In all honestly I would love to hear them play this awesome tune together!!
Pardon my French but that was fucking awesome!
Is that French for shit????
Wi wi
You don’t have to cuss.
Nice job on an oldie but goodie! I remember watching the Glen Campbell show as a kid when it was first played on TV.
I'll eventually get banned for saying this (said it way more than once): He plays the bridge in the wrong key. In the original it's the horn section which bumps up to C# and then climbs back down to C. Tommy is an amazing player and I won't presume to be in his league but I think it falls short a little with that.
Still, awesome player and, by and large, a great interpretation of the piece.
Tommy's interpretation is to Mason Williams' what Jimi Hendrix Star Spangled Banner was to the original. It's an interpretation, and it's acceptable as such, but I don't care for it at all. I agree with TyryptchUK from 2 years ago. I'll stick with the various versions that Mason has out here. Cheers.
two different legends and two great styles-love both version-prefer the original
steve fogarty i prefer tommy's
I always like to hear the original composer play his/her song.
I love that tune since I first heard it in the sixties. It is beautiful and I still could listen to it ten times in a row. I also admire the incredible talent of Tommy Emmanuel. He is today's greatest guitarist but this interpretation is for show more than for music. It is not really music to listen to but music to watch!
I was 15 when this song came out and heard it on AM radio. Having been raised on country and western, I had never heard anything like it before. I still remember it being absolutely amazing. Have loved it even since.
Mason has a whole orchestra behind him. I had a copy of Mason's LP featuring this when it first came out, and still do. Of course, Tommy is creating the whole orchestral effect on his own. They are both wonderful - comparisons can be odious.
This video is a 'classical repeat' of the US American National Anthem being butchered by so many so-called, 'new-age performers". What is wrong with the original pop-hit Mason Williams so lovingly composed? Pardon my opinion, but for all time there will only be one pure," Classical Gas".
***** National anthem? You're full of Gas!!
Some folks on YT don,t seem to understand the concept of a musician doing their own arrangement of a song.Tommy could have played the original note for note if he wanted to but that,s already been done, remember Hendrix didn,t write Watchtower.
You said it man!!
As someone else who loves music said there are 83 small villiages missing their IDIOTS
I am not sure what you mean by that. This village raised one of them in OKC. I love Tommy Emmanuel no matter what he plays. You may need a music degree to really appreciate modern day Bachs on the guitar.
Both true legends, but no one equals Tommy, ever!
nothing will beat the original
This is the original!
@@darlalong1957 i know it is lots of guitarists have copied this song but for me mason is the man
@@ste123456754 I absolutely agree!
Even as a kid this music touched my heart and grabbed my soul. Only in the past year or so, have I listened to it, and not experienced that deep feeling of profound longing. At 56, I'm thankful to now feel utter joy without the longing, my desire to understand the mysteries this breathtaking music made me feel.
Not everyone will understand what I'm talking about, however, more than a few will.
Thanks for sharing this soul speaking music. It's magic vibrations flow throughout the infinite. Blessings, favor and love to all who understand. 💞
me to brother I'm also 56
i cant chose who is better cause for mason williams at his time it was flawless and amzing its such a beautiful piece but for emmanule the guy is crazy at what he does too so in my books there both equal winners
You can easily see how, way back in human history, certain individuals could come along once and awhile, who could be considered "possessed" by magical powers or "spirits", if you will. Tommy's like a modern day version of that; he's literally exploding with talent, with his performances are never at a loss for positive energy.
Cat Keys I’m sorry, my friend, no magic there. Just pure human talent and dedication to their craft
@@paulpower9959 Of course. This is the present, and we understand the existence of things like human prodigies such as Emmanuel. But, like I said, if this was, say 300 yrs ago, when people couldn't watch TV or have the internet so that they could see that there are people like Tommy in existence, and that they, although rare, (sometimes VERY rare, as in the case of Emmanuel) are not entirely unique (and they didn't "sell their soul to the devil" or anything silly like that).
Love the way he throws laura Brannigan's "Gloria" on as an intro! incredible
where is that Enmanuel lives? I want to send him a guitar that don't make that much noise and clear notes.
My acoustic guitar has Tommy's signature on it from when I met him at a music festival in California haha. He's such a nice guy. So much feeling watching him play a tiny little show in front of me and like 7 other people too haha.
To tryptchUK...what the hell are you smoking? This is great. Are you a professional musician, composer, arranger or conductor?
Damn this is so so very good music. Amazing. Genius this guy. Think Glen Canpbell is a genius too, only he didn't compose this. I love them crazy good guitarists, Mason Williams, Glen Campbell and Mark Knopfler. Okay jimmy hendrix too. Another style.
Of course there's no denying that Tommy is dextrous and animated, but that's not music to me, it doesn't move me. He always comes across a show-off, like that annoying kid at school: "I've got more toys than you", "look how fast I am", "my shoes are better than your shoes" et al. Somehow I just don't feel any emotion in his playing, his need to continually reprove himself and his ego get in the way every time for me. I find it odd that a man of his age and talent is still unable to express any mature emotions. I knew someone like that once, his playing bored me to tears. Well, each to their own, he just doesn't do it for me at all. Mason Williams 1, Tommy 0. Hahahah..
Sorry, but as much as I can appreciate the technical difficulty of what Emmanuel is doing, it just doesn't sound great frankly, too muffled, muddled and all over the place.
SORRY , I'll pass on this .....misses the rhythm completely . Can't touch Mason !!!!!!!
I love Tommy Emmanuel and see him in concert every year. But in the case of Classical Gas, I like the original Mason Williams version better.
Randy Finch I bought Mason's single and loved it too. I like Tommys also. Shouldn't compare.
do u think everyone should play all songs alike it called having fun and being diverse in playing if u don't like tommy go to some other site but don't criticize.i think most of his concert sell out so I don't think it matters , do your concerts sell out .
Is this the only song Mason knows. He is like chubby checker, going around doing the same old song year after decade.
*N O W D O C L A S S I C A L G A S*
Mason Williams performance, while utilising the accompaniment of a small orchestra, is the standard by which all others are measured. Tommy Emmanuels version is a more complex rendition of the piece without any accompaniment whilst leaving parts out and adding others in. They are in a completely different style Mason Williams performance while utilising the accompaniment of a small orchestra is the standard by which all others are measured,
Mason has the saddest guitar face ever
maybe his mother used to pull his hair when he was little boy, no sorry I'm being impertinent lol
my versions bollox compared 2 these DUDES but check it out anyways loooooooooooooooool!!!!!
There..right there is a life time investment in something special ..we are so lucky 🙏🙏🏿🦄
Ah, I see! It’s an explanation of the difference between marijuana and cocaine.
No doubt Tommy can play but like a woman who wears way too much makeup this too is overdone.
I luv tommy but this version lacks sublety of piece just a little over the top ...Sorry
Total agreement.
yeah... that was ridiculously idiotic, i mean.. so awesome but i mean common... the guy was beating the microphone...
Oh that second rendition..........now your just showing off. LOL.
Nada que ver, es una mierda esa interpretación de Tommy Emmanuel.
