Bobby Brown - Mystical Magic (1990) - The Album We NEVER Got

  • Bobby Brown, the unexpected breakout star and face of the New Jack Swing era in music was riding high on the success of his second studio album, Don't Be Cruel. The Don't Be Cruel campaign spanned 1988 to 1991, in the midst of that time came the emergence of new artists including fellow New Edition members Ralph Tresvant, Johnny Gill and Bell Biv Devoe. Mystical Magic was the original follow-up album to Don't Be Cruel that would never be released. Tap Into My Heart is the one track from the album that was heard live on two separate occasions. This video essay details the history leading up to it's creation from Bobby Brown's initial departue from New Edition, King of Stage and Don't Be Cruel. I also speculate as to why Mystical Magic was ultimately shelved and briefly discuss Bobby Brown's 1992 album: Bobby.

I am a diehard fan of Bobby Brown I don't care what nobody say he had high energy he was a precise dancer and yes he can sing he had a unique voice and it wasn't no Luther vandross type of voice or nothing like that it was more of a smooth voice that he was just talented dominating that era New Jack swing is the shit that need to bring it back 😎

Nobody wants to believe Bobby didn't mess Whitney up, she was already on that's stuff per facts. If he hadn't stopped to tour with her and pushed himself, he would've been even bigger. They loved each other but wasn't meant. And Whitney wasn't an innocent princess, and neither did she personally try to push that, that was Clive and her large evil eyed mama.

You have to remember that Bobby was still on the “Don’t be cruel” tour. Louil Silas most likely felt that it wouldn’t make any sense to release “mystical magic” while he was still touring for “DBC.” “From the outside” and “tap into my heart” most likely were produced by either Teddy Riley or Timmy Gatling (both Teddy and Timmy wrote “I’ll be good to you” for “DBC” by the way).
Wish Bobby would release it now.

Respect for what you're doing with these docs bro. I've watched Ralph, Bobby, and Tender Love so far. I knew most of the info but did not know about New Edition almost getting the Tender Love track. These brothers are true icons and will never truly get respect for all of their work and talent. This one hit home for me because young people today don't understand how talented and groundbreaking Bobby was. People respected his live show and performances but would crap on his vocal. As a person who has heard a live Bobby Brown vocal, he holds up better than many of these young raw vocals I hear today. Not trashing today's artist, Bobby didn't get the credit he should have for his singing alone.

Yeah, but DBC sold 6 million+. 'Bobby,' though a "hit" by industry standards, it was a sharp decline. I don't know how good (or not good) this in-between album was...but when you're a rising star with the world in your palms, you don't go 4 years between releases. He basically let the music scene transition away from him, as opposed to transitioning WITH it, which is what can kill a career. DBC was released in 1988, and the promotional cycle went through to the end of '89. So he should have dropped a new album in 1990, while the world still saw him as top shelf. By 1992, his popularity wasn't as red hot as it had been.

I was 10 when Don’t Be Cruel came out and to this day, remains one of my favorite albums. When ‘On Our Own’ came out, Bobby was so on top of the world. A string of 6 top 5 hits, the best selling album of 1989 (at the time) and a unique talent that was all his own. When Bobby came out in ‘92, I was a little disappointed by it. They completely over thought it.
That "Tap Into My Heart" track, particularly since it has been previewed on tour would have been a great lead off track coming out of the Don't Be Cruel era. It would have vibed & held it's own in the 1990/1991 soundscape. The machine around Bob at the time would have given it an edge over it's competition in the marketplace to boot.
Considering that about half of the resulting "Bobby" album was in this vein they should have trusted where this sound was leading them. If anything the delay is what cost them. Not releasing in the 90/91 time frame is what ultimately made the "Bobby" album fall flat and sound dated to many in the context of it's ultimate release, a full two years after BBD's initial release (wayyyy to long IMHO).
But take that album and drop it say Jan/Feb, 1991 /w "Tap Into My Heart" or "Get Away" as the lead single and Bobby Brown would have simply picked up more steam & kept barreling down the track.
    Definitely a missed opportunity.

@@misterDjayMDJ it's obviously not Don't Be Cruel. It's clearly not Bobby. It's not even the Masterpiece.
But it's worth a listen. I enjoy the tracks from it. Weirdly, I enjoy them more in a Bobby mix playlist, or an NE playlist. I haven't listened to Forever as a stand alone project probably since 97 lol.
I'll even say it like this. It's worth a listen just to hear it in the context that Bob has described it. As High music. Anytime I hear any tracks from that project, I pay closer attention to the lyrical content as well as the beats....DOA did his thing still. But the tracks aren't bad. They're.....ok. average Bobby tracks.

I didn’t agree with him saying that Micheal and Prince were trying to be something that they aren’t but I think what Bobby meant was that the younger generation probably weren’t interested in Michael or Prince as much at the time and that’s not to say that the two weren’t extremely popular because they were but the younger generations probably related to Bobby at the time more than Michael and Prince.
