You now know what you need to know to understand Mal. Mal is extremely tribal; he looks after his tribe, whatever it takes. He has an _extremely_ over-developed paternal instinct. He lost a lot of people he cared about and who were his responsibility, once. He will not let that happen again. He values Inara, which is why he hates her profession.
I've only just begun watching this video and had to pause. Your comment about "sci-fi not really your thing" but how you've watched Firefly and Star Trek and REALLY enjoyed BOTH, "so there MUST be something in the WATER" gave me the giggles! 😂😂😂
A lot of people miss that Mal HAD to leave Simon...they already tried looking for him, and if they don't find him in time Sheppard definitely dies. There really wasn't a choice there. The stuff about River and Shepard (and a lot of stuff in the show really) is a slow burn. Remember, this show was supposed to be 20+ episodes a season for multiple seasons, so it was always meant to reveal stuff over time.
Yep for me the biggest shame was missing Jaynes 5 season arc from totally selfish mercenary to selfless revolutionary leader in the anti alliance upraising.
You have a very good knowledge of English idioms! The characters in this series use a lot of old slang terms from the 19th century American frontier. 20:00 'Bird-dogging' means 'stalking' or 'following', from the way a hunter's dog retrieves a bird after he shoots it. 29:29 'Blubberous' means 'fat', 'blubber' is an old word for whale fat. 21:24 'Cleaved to you' means married
*Episode 5 - "Safe"* I love the scene when River quickly learned all the local dance steps and within minutes became the center of attention as she was innovating new dance moves. At the end - River steals Jayne's dinner roll off his plate. She intentionally sat next to Jayne. Perhaps she intended "payback" because she knew Jayne had earlier stolen Simon's things. Mal to Jayne about moving cattle: "They move just as easy if you lead them." Jayne to Mal: "I like smackin' 'em." This dialog exchange sums up how they lead a crew as well. It calls back to "The Train Job" when Jayne told Wash "Do you know what the rutten chain of command is? It's the chain I get to beat you with ... " "Daddy will come and take us home" Daddy = Mal, Home = Serenity. *Priorities:* Mal gambled that Simon & River should be safe for a later rescue while he gets Shepherd Book some urgent medical help. We can speculate that Mal's military background taught him guerilla war tactics (like how to hide in the hills). The Hill Folk are good at evading the townsfolk = similar tactics. This factored into why Mal knew there wasn't enough time to search for Simon. Probably also why Mal was able to find Simon & River as quickly as he did. BIG DAMN HEROES! *Episode 6 - "Our Mrs Reynolds"* So many great quotes in Firefly. Isn't that ... Special? Certainly more than I want to try and post here. Knocking 'Saffron' out was a smart idea. She was always plotting for an advantage. Mal couldn't take her to any authorities. Killing her or tying her up to leave behind would be too cruel for Mal to do. It's best to knock her out and take the shuttle back.
Absolutely loving the faces you make when Mal screws up. That is probably the best "I'm so done with him" face ever. Your gonna give yourself a headache rolling your eyes at him lol
Ron Glass (preacher) said he originally was not excited about the series until he read the script and realized that it was a cowboy/frontiersman/outcast story that just happened to take place in space. No goofy prosthetics. If you haven't watched it already you might enjoy "Galaxy Quest". It's been called a love spoof of Star Trek and "Trekkies".
'Our Mrs Reynolds' is the best episode of the whole show. Many great moments in other episodes but this one takes the cake. It's fast paced, extremely well written, funny, great acting, has Christina Hendricks at her peak sexyness ... and then there's Vera. Great reaction Biss, a pleasure to rediscover Firefly through your young eyes !
I like to think Firefly is more approachable for people who aren't fans of traditional science fiction because it's just about people trying to live their lives, rather than traditional science fiction which is "aliens attack with impossible technology, and we retaliate with equally impossible technology."
To be fair "aliens attack with impossible technology, and we retaliate with equally impossible technology." is blockbuster movie sci fi. Most actual sci fi is far more "sciencey and cerebral" 😀👍
Good reactions. the end of episode 6 is hilarious and perfect. Every female I've seen react to it assumed the same perspective as Inara (thinking he was talking about her kissing him), and every guy i've seen react to it is thinking like Mal. Perfect, funny, and cute example of the difference between secses.
Greetings Ms. Biss! 6 Episodes in and you are feeling why we all love this series... they are all such natural, fun, and intriguing characters. And don't worry milady, all will be revealed unto you, in the fullness of time! We're all enjoying your reactions, the shock, surprise, and laughter as you continue this wild ride! P.S.: Blubbery means excessively and disgustingly fat... think of Baron Harkonen in the DUNE Movies! 😅😅😅
You're so expressive and I'm here for it. So glad you're watching this show. Sci-fi fan or not, it's impossible not to fall in love with these characters. So excited!!
Good one, Bisscute! This show is so witty, love it! Glad you're enjoying it too. Oh, blubberous means fat, like whale blubber. Mal thought she was calling him fat, LOL! Thanks for sharing these episodes. 🙂
And well, yes firefly is a sci-fi, but it’s honestly more about the people and the story, the tech and the whole world it’s built in. Only exist to further and build the story. I think that may be why and so many others like it, who don’t normally like sci-fi stuff.
Christina Hendricks (Saffron) is just beautiful in this. Not taking anything away from the other Ladies. But I do love a Red Head. Great to see Biss enjoying Firefly and getting pissed about not knowing about River. Thanks for making me smile. Cheer's Beautiful.x
This is the difference between a reactor and a Great reactor :) Not only is the Biss cute with her looks and thoughts, her video edits are on point. There are certain things in each episode that need to be in video even if it's chopped up to keep the feel for it and we get that here :) I hate when reactors cut out the good bits. :P
I really felt that the way the parents where acting made it seem they knew what was happening to River. Perhaps River was a government run Eugenics experiment. If the series had continued on that would have been a great plot.
Oh man, I hadn't even thought of that with how many times I've seen this! I always assumed they were just blinded by their comfort and trust in the system... but if they were being paid off or something or their kids were the result of some government experiment... man... that's dark. Edit: Apparently my mother had this idea right away and discussed the theory with me years ago, but I'd forgotten XD
It made me think the parents were deeply indoctrinated and it made me wonder what the government told them (if they spun fantasies about their program and galvanized the parents against River's calls for help) or if they were somehow being drugged, and didn't bother to do the same to Simon because only the parents had the legal power to take River out of the school.
@@Br0nto5aurus I think it is more a demonstration of how insidious government control can be. They know how precarious life is. Yes, they have it good and are riding high, but you run afoul of the government and it can be snatched away in an instant. The permanent record (or social credit rating) can be the kiss of death to advancement. People in that situation are afraid to acknowledge anything bad the government does because then they have to chose between their child and their life--much easier to ignore the conflict and explain away (to themselves even!) anything odd from River. In the book Watership Down, there's a warren of rabbits that are cared for and harvested by a hunter and everyone ignores the constant trickle of deaths because it is the price they pay for safety and ease.
I think it's more about alliance/government control. In the earlier scene we see their father being a good dad. In the later scene, it is eluded to that his unwillingness to help further is driven by "social status" and what the government can do to wreck that.
I've always thought both of those were interesting episodes and add a lot to the universe it takes place in, and I like the distinctness of the characters and their different and sometimes competing moralities.
kaylee's the best! ♥ 'yer on my crew' 🙂 'I swear by my pretty floral bonnet, I will end you' - 😃 Saffron - deadly beauty! 'special hell' 😃 Christina Hendrix is gorgeous! 😳
32:48 Translations for the non-English dialogue would more or less negate their intent. The writer's room went with, I believe, Cantonese slang specifically to evade American censors
Translations do exist on teh interwebz, though the last time I tried googling for them they seemed to be hard to find, while when I was looking in 2004-2005 they'd pop right up as top results in searches. A lot of them were simply straight up swearing, but many more were silly/funny things like "you stinking puddle of monkey-piss." I recall reading that their pronunciations were so bad that Chinese speakers said that about half the time they couldn't understand what the intended lines were.
Yes. There are long videos on how bad this odd combination of Mandarin and Cantonese is. I get that it's very difficult to get accents and dialects, but who was on the job of wording? Lol.
The show costed 1.5 million dollars per episode in 2001 (about 5X the price of other new 1 hour shows), and Fox had management changes right when it went into production. The new honcho was throwing his weight around, They aired the 1st episode out of order and pre-empted the 2nd and 3rd episodes for games 1 & 7 of the world series that year. Fox dropped it into the dead-mans time slot of Friday night at 8pm when people went out. So they never gave it a fair chance. Now it has millions of fans world wide, and a legendary cult following.
Bird-Dogging: a descriptive term used to describe the action of a dog, hunting and finding birds hidden in the bush. Bird Dogs do not attack or kill their prey. But are trained to Stop, and Point at the birds. Hence, the breed is known as a, "Pointer." They are non-aggressive, anxious to please, and love to run. Another hunting breed is the "Retriever." Non-aggressive, anxious to please, great with children, and love to swim. Both of these breeds are in the "Working Class" of dogs.
But why does the phrase apply to the bandits? I'd actually always heard it as "prairie dogging this town" which I took to mean they'd been popping up out of nowhere.
Yes "bird-dogging" is a term that originated from hunting, with dogs trained to track/pursue wounded birds. It's generally interpreted as relentless pursuit/harassment.
BIrd dogs dont kill, they are trained to stop / point at prey. Bird dogging the town means they have been sitting around outside the city limits chasing down and robbing wagons of supplies headed for town.
I've always considered this: Mal is fiercely independent, and kind of traumitized/cynical after losing the war. He doesn't want to lose anything/anyone else. He may very well suspect that Inara is interested, but he's not willing to risk that loss. While he may truly disagree with Inara's profession, he probably also condemns it so as to maintain distance between the 2 of them. If he has enough reasons, aside from playing dumb, it will be enough to keep himself from committing to her. In his mind, better not love than risk further loss.
This scene where the crew is surprised by their buyers, then the law shows up, and people are grabbed is the definition of getting "bushwhacked" which was the title of the second episode. I don't know what happened there...lol.
"blubberous" isn't technically a word, but here it refers to whale blubber, and it's describing men who are grossly overweight and probably have bad hygiene as well.
When you've finished with all that is Firefly. And have fallen in love with *Capt Malcolm 'Mal' Reynolds* (Nathan Fillion) You'll have to, _correction_ , You'll want to watch *"CASTLE"* another awesome TV series. Starring *Nathan.*
Bird-dogging is an old rural phrase to mean "harassing." It's still used but very rarely and I'd imagine only in the southern USA. Northerners tend not to have as much character in their speech. And pirate cowboys would be referred to as highwaymen when they do their piracy on land. Blubber is whale fat. Used to be probably the most expensive thing on Earth.
Love watching people see this opening scene meant to remind you that a dress can hide danger, but still immediately fall for a problematic story told by a stranger in a dress.
22.50 and here we got Book, being the one to explain to our boy that COUNTER TO HIS UNDERSTANDING, he is a married man. by planetary law. this will prove quite baffling later...
Bird dogging is an American slang term for someone who follows another. Like a speeding car being followed by someone to match their speed. That is the proper context of the term.
I think you would really like the tv show 'Leverage'. It's a show about master thieves committing crimes on behalf of clients who got screwed by big companies.
I like to think at some point in the future, we could've seen a spin-off where Jayne and Saffron hooked up and went on a crime spree like Bonnie and Clyde. Until Jayne figured out just how out there she really was and had to get rid of her. Also, while I've seen a native Chinese speaker attempt to translate all the swearing and slang they use, they don't speak it very well. Which might have been intentional, considering Mal, Jayne, Zoe, and Wash all likely grew up outside Alliance influence and mostly learned Chinese informally. Like Mal most likely learned it from ranch hands growing up.
One thing to keep in mind is that even if it sounds like jumbled jibberish, most things River say has a meaning somehow. Wish will be apparent especially in the movie.
If you feel like dipping your toes into more Sciffi, you should consider adding THE EXPANSE. It's a phenominal series that will draw you faster than you can yell out Screaming Firehawk! Also, for more fantastical scifi, consider Farscape and Stargate, both the film and the TV shows (start with the film, continue in the series w/ SG-1)
"What is 'blubbrous'?" Well, iit goes back to the word 'blubber' the name for the very thick layers of fat beneath a whale's skin, often enjoyed as food by Inuit peoples living in or around the Arctic Circle. So to call someone blubbrous is to say they are very fat.
1:44 Why yes it *is* a young Zac Efron. I never knew that was him, because I just didn't care. But since you asked I looked it up and it is in fact him.
Don't be surprised about liking Firefly even if you do not like SCI-FI. Firefly is no SCI-FI [specially no SCI], it is a western... on space. Ships and such are just props.
"blubberous" directly means "fat" but the word also implies being drunk and emotional to the point of being a crier. Dirty and unclean of body is also implied.
Hi Biss❤ Didn't the video render properly this time? It shows 1080p@60 like normal but looks more like a 640ish on 3 of my devices. They are usually sharp and smooth.
Personally, I think Simon and River's parents knew what was happening to her. I think if the show had continued, it would have been revealed that they handed her over for a fat payout or political connections.
I think that's a perfectly reasonable interpretation. My personal take, though, is that they are just upper class nobs in a society that emphasizes conformity. I like that they mention the medical "elect." Very Puritan.
Inara: "You're not doing a very good job of hiding your interest" Me: That's because she's an honest and real person. She doesn't manipulate people's feelings. Unlike certain professions.
the great, oh-so-noble Alliance employs people who respond to requests for aid with armed men searching through your ship for things they can arrest you for. that's why not.
"That's why I never kiss them on the mouth" I now remember where I stole that line 😂
Your reaction to 'I knew you let her kiss you' is pretty much the reaction everyone gave to that moment. :)
When River said Daddy was going to come back for them, she meant Mal

Bird-dogging is an old rural phrase to mean "harassing." It's still used but very rarely and I'd imagine only in the southern USA. Northerners tend not to have as much character in their speech. And pirate cowboys would be referred to as highwaymen when they do their piracy on land.
Blubber is whale fat. Used to be probably the most expensive thing on Earth.
I see, thank you
Love watching people see this opening scene meant to remind you that a dress can hide danger, but still immediately fall for a problematic story told by a stranger in a dress.
22.50 and here we got Book, being the one to explain to our boy that COUNTER TO HIS UNDERSTANDING, he is a married man. by planetary law. this will prove quite baffling later...
Hi Biss👋
Can’t wait till you see the movie Serenity. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll have a good time!
#6 is my favorite episode of the series. Although "Trash" is a pretty close 2nd.
I’m beginning to think Biss and Mal are a lot alike😂
Bird dogging is an American slang term for someone who follows another. Like a speeding car being followed by someone to match their speed. That is the proper context of the term.
Thank you Biss and team. 😊😊
Biss IS Mal from the show
:grins: I have noted she seems to snatch dialogue from the near future quite regularly :D
@23:47 Awesome laugh!
That money is everyone's lively-hood. They all depend on it to survive.
"I'm just mad about Saffron..."
LOL I see what you did there...
"Quite rightly...." It has been maybe 30-40 year since I've heard that song, but it was still the first thing that came to mind!@@ernesthakey3396
"What is 'blubbrous'?"
Well, iit goes back to the word 'blubber' the name for the very thick layers of fat beneath a whale's skin, often enjoyed as food by Inuit peoples living in or around the Arctic Circle. So to call someone blubbrous is to say they are very fat.
1:44 Why yes it *is* a young Zac Efron. I never knew that was him, because I just didn't care. But since you asked I looked it up and it is in fact him.
on the first episode, iirc, Mal did the sign of the cross(during the battle), he was still a believer of God. The war changed him.
Your facial expressions... 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Biss: To who?
Inara: To whom?
Don't you hate it when shows correct your grammar?
Good stuff!
Don't be surprised about liking Firefly even if you do not like SCI-FI. Firefly is no SCI-FI [specially no SCI], it is a western... on space. Ships and such are just props.
9:51 'you gonna throw all that away?' yeah, just like you're throwing your daughter away.
"blubberous" directly means "fat" but the word also implies being drunk and emotional to the point of being a crier. Dirty and unclean of body is also implied.
Bandits = pirate cowboys
Hi Biss❤ Didn't the video render properly this time? It shows 1080p@60 like normal but looks more like a 640ish on 3 of my devices. They are usually sharp and smooth.
Summer Glau (River) is a trained ballerina.
oh wow
6:17 Too under him? No, I'd say that Kaylee isn't under Simon nearly enough. XD
Morning, no make-up, pajamas and you have never looked more beautiful.
Inara: "You're not doing a very good job of hiding your interest"
Me: That's because she's an honest and real person. She doesn't manipulate people's feelings. Unlike certain professions.
Bisscute you cute thing ! You have a crush on Mal ! Haha
I’m jealous ❤️
Pirate cowboys = Bandits
Yeah there's some pretty girls there, but I ❤ Vera. She's my kind of gal.
Try Babylon 5 TV series. A 5 year / season long story about humans and their place in the galaxy.
the great, oh-so-noble Alliance employs people who respond to requests for aid with armed men searching through your ship for things they can arrest you for. that's why not.
❤
