Mike's bass coming in on Nutshell gives me serious goosebumps but then when Layne walks on stage, sits down and immediately starts to sing, that just kills me. I'll cry right through it
That bass sounds sooo fkn good!!
That version of Nutshell still brings out tears in my eyes.
I know...it’s a killer song...
Absolute masterpiece ❤️
YES!!!! It is better than the studio version on the second track "Jar Of Flies."
Pro tip: you can watch series on Flixzone. Me and my gf have been using them for watching loads of movies during the lockdown.
@Joseph Amir yup, have been watching on Flixzone for months myself :)
Alice in chains one of the best bands of all time
The best version of “ Got me wrong”.
Scotty Olson really shined on that one
Fuk yes!!!
I actually prefer these acoustic unplugged versions of almost all of these songs. This was a monumental performance and it showcased Layne’s voice perfectly. One if my all time favorites 💜
Laynes talking voice sounds so soft and delicate…it’s nothing like I thought it would be!! Wow that’s intriguing!
Considering the state poor Layne was, he did an amazing job.
You can see Jerry nod his head while looking over at Layne during nutshell , he’s probably thinking “Layne is all kinds of messed up, but he’s still fucking got it!”
I hate how ppl say poor layne as if he didn't choose to put himself in this state. Anyone else that would do this that wasn't famous would just be labled as a fucking junkie loser. If layne was still alive today no one would be talking about him being a legend and that sucks. Sucks that you have to die like this to reach legendary rock star status.
@@ssherrierable agree with every word.
@@ssherrierable it was his own fault but I'd like to judge him less harshly. Whether it's drugs, sex, McDonald's, toxic stress at work - how many of us do things that are bad for our health every day?
Layne died alone. He's suffered enough.
Its because he was Layne Staley. Even at his worst he was a vocal god. And a lyrical genius too
Damn that Layne’s Voice .
I can’t express how much I love this man .
Down in hole was amazing and very memorable Layne did a awesome job on that song.
It's crazy cause Jerry wrote that song but you can see Layne is feeling it.
My favorite live performed song of all time..
GREATEST BAND EVER.MISS AND LOVE YA LAYNE..RIP..
Hands down
So much pain and emotion in laynes voice, very touching
I was introduced to AIC through the unplugged dvd while at a friends house. For whatever reason, I got chills watching Layne walk on to the stage and perform nutshell. I was an instant fan . It’s just unfortunate I never got to see Layne perform.
I can never get enough of hearing the crowd's response to Layne's entrance it is very chilling
April 10, my birthday. Love it, subjectively the greatest unplugged ever. And possibly one of the best “unplugged” live performances ever.
It has been twenty-five years now but when I listen to it occasionally it still feels like the first time again for me. 'RIP Layne Thomas Staley you were my favorite singer~~~
I wish they would have done "Don't Follow" during this show. That said, it was a legendary showing.
One of the greatest live performances of all time.
Down in a hole was very memorable layne did vey awesome job on it
This and queen live aid are my top 2 all time favorite live performances. This was legendary.
My goodness, imagine if they had included "we die young"
I can hear it right now
Greatest live album of all time!
An incredible, wonderful, classic Unplugged, with the songs in an acoustic version that are wonderful, I love AIC Unplugged. Layne's voice is spectacular, that's when you realize the quality of a singer, his voice was beautiful live and recorded.
You can tell that Jerry protected Layne. Especially when Layne sang the second verse of Sludge Factory before the first verse.. It does upset me that Angry Chair was not on the original recording. Brother (first track on SAP) is also a favorite. I noticed this video is 2 days before Layne's birthday (August twenty second). Your videos are excellent and have passionate detail (I am a subscriber due to that). Nutshell I connect to mainly of the two lyrics "No one to cry to / No place to call home."
That’s funny I was thinking the total opposite... if you look at his face right after it happens he looks like he’s annoyed and I felt like he only said that to appease the audience
I think it’s the best live performance OF ALL TIME!
Sludge Factory is done insanely good on Unplugged what a singer Layne was 1 of a kind.
I love laynes voice so much!!!
Still hurts thinking about Layne but thankful for his performance.
3:35
You can hear James's "YEAAAHWWWWW!!" Yell after one of the songs lol
Is that confirmed to be him?
God forbid the day I feel nothing listening to this band. Can’t imagine such a time...🖤
Best unplugged album ever recorded and yes better than Nirvanas, which is awesome but nothing can ever touch AiC unplugged.
Layne Staley is my idol. I fuckin love Layne. He made me feel not alone. Some many of the songs I can relate to i feel like he's singing about me and my problems
I relate to every word you wrote 🖤
When I bought the DVD I must have watched it a million times alice in chains unplugged 1 of the best ever became my favorite band of all time Layne smashed it on sludge factory after the miscue rip Layne 1 of the greatest singers ever
heavy addicted to this unplugged performance! aic 4 ever
Yesss the best unplugged ever
I like your style of delivery. Not just reading of of Wikipedia or something, you train about your personal experience and memories of this performance
Imagine if they would’ve opened with Rotten Apple…..💙
God bless, whoever's thought to do this unplugged of Alice in Chains. One of the greatest ever
One of the greatest unplugged albums EVER!! I have loved AiC since the 90s. They were, and are, an intricate part of my music vernacular and can never be compared to any of the other grunge bands! Great video!
I have my AIC t-shirt on right now!!!
That will always be one of my favorite albums. Just takes me back to that time in my life.
Unplugged has the best version of Nutshell, Down in a Hole, Sludge Factory, Frogs and Got me wrong.
“Sound of silence often soothes”
“Shapes and colors shift with mood”
The Unplugged show in 1996 is so heartbreaking to watch because he was deep in his heroin addiction (and yes, I know he was on other drugs). His liver was damaged and he knew it. He was just high enough to do the show so he didn't get dope sick. He was such a ghost of himself during Unplugged. (Of course, Jerry had food poisoning) All Jerry saw when he looked over at Layne was his best friend was going to die soon. That show was filmed in April, 1996, premiered in May 1996. They did four shows with KISS in June-July 1996, after which Layne overdosed and became a recluse. It was a 6 year long slow suicide after that.
As for having to cancel the tour with Metallica, James Hetfield is a jackass. JERRY was the one who was friends with the guys in Metallica. Layne wasn't. Layne tolerated the Metallica guys being in the front row of the Unplugged show for Jerry's sake. There's no love lost between Layne and Metallica since AIC had to cancel the 1994 tour with Metallica and James Hetfield made fun of Layne's addiction because AIC couldn't do extended tours due to Layne's addiction. When Hetfield went through his own stint in rehab for being an alcoholic, he had the audacity to ask for "understanding" while he went through his rehab. Yet, he didn't give that same "understanding" to Layne when Layne was going through it. During the 2nd or 3rd KISS show in 1996 Layne took a shot at Metallica for wearing mascara and eyeliner, etc etc which they were at the time. Metallica says their Death Magnetic album started out as a tribute to Layne and SHINE was about Layne, but they did that for Jerry not because they all of a sudden started to like Layne after he died. "Oh, but Lars named his kid Layne." If he did it was a guilty conscience that got the better of him for how Metallica treated Layne.
tamibrandt 😢
I don't see Layne is that bad of shape here. He was battling addiction and lost weight. He still looked healthy and alive. He still had his keen witt about him for sure
Heroin was not his biggest problem.
The Jokerz Gallery the unplugged gig and Kiss tour shows are painful but amazing to watch 😞
Couldn't agree more about how heartbreaking it is to watch! And I'll add how selfish it is that I hate that I don't get to hear that amazingly unique and beautifully haunting voice live anymore. I'll also admit that You're first paragraph is 100% accurate - because you obviously also watched the interview of Jerry with Lars. May want to consider not writing things as your own when everybody watching this probably watched that too...
As for the 2nd paragraph... First, don't write as if you know how any of these people really feel (unless you also watched another interview I somehow missed and are writing about that as your own too?). Second, your massive conclusion jumping and own lack of understanding is significant... I'll admit my thoughts on this are assumptions - so probably more credible already. But I'll guess James regrets the mocking of Layne as much as anything he's ever regretted saying on stage. And as for "Understanding", since James was more than likely battling at least the beginnings of addiction at that time, it very much could have been said out of fear and to make himself feel better for an instant - so may want to consider being understanding to both at different stages of their unfortunate addictions. Otherwise it's pure ignorance to only blame one for making poor choices... And my next comment is also an assumption - but I wouldn't think for a second that James would show up just for Jerry without already having apologized and patched things up with Layne - either directly or through management. He definitely wasn't one who seemed to let go of grudges easily back then - and has never seemed one to "pretend" - so if there in person, I'm guessing it was also out of respect and admiration for a fellow front man who had vocal gifts and talent that James was in awe of just like the rest of us.. Lastly, to say that Metallica were ever intending to write a tribute album or even a song about Layne just for Jerry is laughable. Do you think James would write one word, line, lyric, song, or entire album that didn't actually mean, believe, and feel? I'll give you a hint - fuck no!
Dude... YOU ROCK! Very well put together video, & tasteful..no bs. Thank you.🤗✌️
Beautiful boy layne Staley
I remember being younger and more entitled, wondering why they left out any tracks from Facelift. “I can’t remember”, “Love Hate Love”, and “Bleed the freak” were a few of my favorites. But then I got the album and to this day, it’s my most listened to album from AIC or most bands for that matter.
Layne!!!!!layne!!!!!!godlike😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄tremendous performance,so heartfelt....masterpiece👑👑👑👑👑👑👑👑
Cheers bro. Your videos are great. Keep them coming. I’m still obsessed with the grunge scene after all these years! Love to hear new nuggets of info previously unknown to me. 👌👍
It was a great great show💗💗💗💗🙏
That isn’t Layne’s voice singing “Sludge Factory” 0:31
Alice in Chains unplugged was totally amazing, I get very emotional when I watch it, I've watched it several times. I LOVE ALICE IN CHAINS ♥️😇🤘
Beautifully done man thanks for this
It was a fantastic show!
Love hate love would have been bone chilling !! Damn
There should have been those Facelift songs, but we still got an excellent performance.
Thank you dudeman so respectful you no add at the end what happened after the show to layne. Appreciate ur respect to my angel layne 👍👍😎
Great video
Happy birthday Layne .
My second favorite Unplugged behind Nirvana. No, beside.
Same here, I give the nod to Alice In Chains cause they used all original material. That being said Kurt singing Leadbelly was amazing
Nirvana were great. Nowhere near the talent level as Alice tho. Alice created a crippling and bleak mood that nobody could come close to.
@@adamturner1563 Just different, I hate when people make totem poles. It doesn't make sense. Kurt actually gave Layne a ride home once, they're just people. Not race horses.
Truth is the truth.
@@adamturner1563 Based on a true story
Awesome video my friend.
What version of Sludge Factory was that at the beginning of this video? Sounded like an acoustic demo or something...sounded so raw.
Cool info thanks !!
Has anyone seen Breaking Benjamin and Gavin Rossdale covering 'Would?' Hard to do but I think they nailed it.
🤷
Might give that a miss!
Lol well the snobbery and judgement before listening to it is an attitude that is really off-putting. Enjoy following the crowd and being scared to put forward your honest opinion after listening to it 👋 No matter what music genre you're supposedly into.
@@lucya8916 I know right. Enjoying and acknowledging a good cover doesn't take away from the greatness of the original.
@@pwnshhhop51 Exactly 👍👍👍
MTV. Don't be dumbasses. Please don't remove ANYTHING from these precious performances, and re-do everything on DIGITAL to prevent recording degradation! EDIT: the last songs were pretty much a "goodbye" to everyone, including Layne and the band itself.
Much props to both bands but Alice in chains will always be 1 million times better than Metallica in my humble opinion
Yessss!!! 🖤🖤🖤
I saw Metallica live though….man was that a great time. Caught a pick and Lars’ Gatorade bottle 😂
Awesome for my morning cafe !!! Thanks dudeman always enjoy ur stuff!!✌
What up Amy don't I see you on ASF channel too?
@@grungegods yup u sure do....
@@amyconway9923 that's what's up maybe someone else likes grunge as much as me lol
@@grungegods es possible!!!😅
He's not in chains now. I am a nutshell. I love frogs and Heaven is with us.
Layne Staley is THE G.O.A.T
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Has anyone ever told you that you sound like Lars Ulrich !?
I was kinda thinking the same thing 😆
@@sher8185 Right!? It's uncanny!
Dude I was thinking the exact same thing I even looked at the video description to make sure it wasn’t lars that made this video, even though I knew better.
Yes!!!!!i was thinking the same!!!!uncanny😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
What is the version of nutshell that was played in the first 20-30 seconds of the video?
They should've had Starr sit in for this. It would've been awesome. And thank you for not bringing up Layne's supposed drug use. It's gotten to be way too scripted. But, I guess they had to do damage control after Mike Starr exposed what actually happened on Celebrity Rehab.
Best unplugged song:
Where did you sleep last night - Nirvana
Best unplugged unplugged
Alice in chains - Alice in chains
2nd that
Now we’re getting opinionated...don’t get me wrong I love nirvana but Black-Pearl Jam was incredible
@Aytch and Gigi I agree with you, is not a matter of division by negative comparisons, but in the opposite, I think like you, we should appreciate the legacy and musical gift to us from Cobain and Staley. ❤✌

Cantrell didn't want to be outdone so he gave himself food poisoning Mental note don't eat hot dog meat before recording a (to be) nationaly syndicated program😄
I need help, im sorry...
Hey! Please contact me about being on my podcast!
Very honest of Cantrell to admit the band was at the end here ... I've always felt the same... it feels like they are going through the motions in this performance... nowhere near as epic as Jar of Flies ... where they'd just come off an epic world tour and were hungry and at their peak ...
Should have ended with over now.....no?
Layne knew he had to really put out on his performance after seeing Cobains incredible performance!
Thats ridiculous.
@@ashleymcmeakin8590 Your right. I meant to say Kurt Cobain's incredible performance!!
Layne goofing some lyrics is nothing , try being a ozzy fan the man couldn’t lyrics if he was reading them . Paranoid from 1983 us festival . Watch it and you’ll have a good smile . Ozzy though still railing from losing randy still went out there and did his thing , or listen to any mr Crowley from 1980-1981, different order of words a lot .
He didn't sing the wrong lyrics he was off time, and out of key.
Your Facts are bogus
@@cravenmoorehead5636 🤣 After 20 years in the music industry, as an artist, and executive, bogus or not that is real life facts. Wasteoid 😂
I swear....as soon as a band cuts their Hair...its all downhill....they start sounding like shit....str8up
If you think AIC is better than Nirvana your a NutSHeLL🤪!!! Sells, awards, influence, Impact Nirvana wins hands down!!!!!!
Got way more great songs than Nirvana n I love Nirvana
Seems to me you’re forgetting ones love of music is subjective... also if you really put that much stock in music awards and record sales I’m not sure the world needs your opinion, just sayin
@@one_must_keep_a_pencil What? that's what influence, impact ,recorded sells, awards all represent is peoples opinions . You get them because people like your music . They couldn't have had any of that if nobody listened. Peoples love of music made Nirvana the biggest band in the world at one time. LOL
@@bgb946 the point I was trying to make was there are far too many amazing musicians who never had the privilege of constant radio air play or magazine covers because some suit deemed it so or maybe it was the asshole D.J. who Wouldn’t play their record... get it?
@@one_must_keep_a_pencil Are your trying to say AIC had this happen. Because that's who we are talking about , that statement isn't true at all. Also Kurt was the worst to the media and magazine companies. Your augment is off things you think happen. Nobody is saying AIC bad its just my opinion and the fact Nirvana is still on the radio more shows that there music influenced more people. I also think Soundgarden was better than AIC ... GET It!!! LOL Yeah everyone was trying to stop AIC from having a career. What fantasy do you live in to think that happened.
