Always interesting to see a foreign perspective on where you live, because it's all normal to you ( to me as a Dutch person). Thank you so much for providing English subtitles.❤
Hi there! Really happy to hear you had a great time in the Netherlands! To answer a couple of your questions: 1. *The three crosses on the flags* Unfortunately, there is no conclusive historical evidence to back up any of the ongoing theories as to where the three crosses come from but the most popular one is that they represent Saint Andreas crosses (to ward off evil or symbolize justice) and this is why they were placed on the coat of arms of the city of Amsterdam. 2. *The mysterious machine* The lady at the machine was telling you about the plastic and can tax that has recently been placed on plastic bottles and drinking cans. When you purchase a soft drink such as Coca Cola in a plastic bottle, you pay a tax of €0,15 on the small bottles and €0,25 on the big bottles. When you return these plastic bottles of drinking cans to these specific machines in the stores, you will receive this tax money back (so think of it as a deposit on the plastic bottles and cans). They did this to incentivize consumers to return the plastic bottles and cans instead of littering them. Much to our chagrin, however, as we Dutch people do love to get our money back whenever we can 😂, not all plastic bottles and cans are accepted by those machines depending on the store they were purchased. So in this specific case, the lady was attempting to return a plastic bottle to get her money back but the machine refused, most likely because the plastic bottle in question was not purchased at the store she was trying to return it to. 3. *Income* I wish our median income was €60.000 a year but unfortunately, that is not the case 😭. The median income of an average Dutch family in 2023 was €35.000 before tax (source: our national bureau of statistics which in Dutch is het Centraal Bureau van Statistieken or shortened to CBS). Speaking of coming back to the Netherlands again, here are some personal recommendations from a local 😏: 1. If you ever plan on visiting the famed Keukenhof, make sure you go in the last weeks of April and the first weeks of May as this is the time most of the flowers will be blooming. 2. Plan day trips to Leiden, Utrecht and Delft, I promise you, you will not regret it. Leiden is a lovely small city with beautiful architecture, gardens (highly recommend the botanical garden) and museums. Delft is quite similar and known for its Delft's blue. Utrecht is a bit larger and very central in the Netherlands and has the same gorgeous traditional Dutch architecture and lots of fun activities. 3. For a delicious authentic Dutch meal, I would highly recommend visiting a good Pannekoekenhuis (Pancake house) where you can have either mouth-watering savory or sweet pancakes. Or go to one of the famous Frietkramen (chip shops) and get yourself a patatje oorlog (Dutch specialitiy). 4. Thrift shopping is great fun in the Netherlands (with an expert on what places to visit). I would personally recommend going to the Kilo Kilo stores (you buy the clothes/kg) as they also have a large section of men's wear and things that will fit given your height and frame. Let me know if you would like to have more information about the Netherlands and what it's like living here outside of Amsterdam (Amsterdam is a culture in itself)!
Just some small corrections. 2. "Statiegeld" is not really a tax because it is returned when the bottle is returned. Also this is not recent thing. Statiegeld on pet-bottles has been a thing since before the euro was introduced as a currency. The recent laws just introduced it for tin drinking cans as well. It doesn't actually matter (mostly) where you buy the bottle and where you return it. All supermarkets larger than 200 square meters and all manned petrol stations are required to accept all bottles and cans with statiegeld. Smaller stores can decide for themselves whether they provide this service. In this specific case the machine said "Uw fles is te snel ingevoerd, controleer uw fles en probeer het opnieuw", translating to "Your bottle was put in too quickly, check your bottle and try again". The woman probably could've just tried again, but like she said, those machines can be a bit finnicky sometimes and she was just going to try another machine (bottles often get rejected when they're a bit crumpled/dented and you have to un-dent them first for it to scan them correctly). > but it is illegal in the Netherlands to film others without their explicit consent It is always legal to film others in a public area. However you do require consent if you want to publish the filmed material to the public, and the person you're filming is actively filmed/a subject of the video. Someone passing by in the background of a video filmed in public that is not a clear subject of the video does not have this right to decline consent, even if they are identifiable. Of course it is still respectful to blur people in the background, but you legally don't have to.
I want to correct a little something. It is completely legal and fine to film people in public areas, you only need to obscure them if they ask you to do so. This has to do with the "portret right", meaning you can't publish a persons face and likeness in a photo or video, if they don't agree to. But this is in opposition to the "freedom of information right", which says you can legally film and photograph any public area and people in this area. Basically meaning you can just film everyone in the public, but if they ask to be left out. You can't publish it online without obscuring them. But on private property legally seen you do need to ask permission. Sometimes the workers or boss will ask you to not film inside, and that is their legal right. A bit weird, but a well.
@@KiritomensThank you! I learned something new as well. However, one thing that I am still confused about is the fact that I thought it was illegal to publish either a picture or a video with individuals being visible without their explicit permission. So if an individual does not know they were being filmed, you are not allowed to publish it. You have to actively ask the person in question whether or not they are willing to be filmed.

Great to see others who are not from the Netherlands, like myself, im Scottish, enjoy this pretty little country! I have lived here for 13 years now and love the fact there are so many tall people, im 175cm ...a giant in Scotland, here I am just normal lol . Hope you manage to visit again soon :D
YES! She was so friendly and immediately understood why he was checking it out and explained exactly how it worked. What a great representation of the Dutch.
The dutch lady explaining the plastic bottle return did that very well and was very nice to offer to let you film. Regular dutch people are quite tourist friendly....as long as you do not walk on the bike path, haha Work life balance is very good in the Netherlands, you will be able to get good paid vacations and are expected to go home on time. The flexible hours are good for parents, daycare costs almost as much as your salary so a lot of the time a parent might as well stay home as long as the kids are not in school yet and fathers too reduce their work week to be home with the kids. So if you want a nice place to live a more relaxed safe lifestyle the netherlands is pretty good. Though getting housing is an issue for everyone.
As a 180 cm Dutch woman. . Thanks for putting in subtitles ❤I really want to visit Asia but the sizes are so hard I have M/L size in the Netherlands but in Korea or Japan I'm like XXL+ 😂
I'm 194, but I don't even consider myself as extremely tall. Sometimes I have to look up talking to a person and I actually feel small. However I am the tallest among my friends, and a lot of female friends of mine are only 1.50m. Loved the video! Now I wonder how tall I would feel if I were to visit your country!
You might be the biggest person in the area (around you 100m) when you visit Korea! There are also tall man in Korea who is over than 190cm but it is hardly to find them haha
Wow there are a lot of gyms in the netherlands! People are very interested here in sports and gym to make their body better. I dont know where you are in the netherlands in small towns we dont have many visible ones but trust me they are there. We have basic fit everywhere and many people have even at home gym. Its not cause we cycle that we dont do other sports haha.. only older people from generation of my grandparents they dont really go gym
Hi there,Thanks for your experience ! I’m a tall woman 1.87 m and I like to tell you there are special shops for tall people. A lot of regular brands have also “longwear” enjoy your stay!
@@gxrrttt543At 185 you will be tall, but you won't be the tallest women! I think the tallest women I saw would be around 195. I think the average length for females is 175 or so. My daughter will probably grow to around 181 cm.
They tend speak English very well in the Netherlands and wheee I'am from,Denmark.Amongst the best ones in world to do so,hence we speak that well,i.e. most of us,especially the youth and middle-aged ones👍🌈💎
I really hope you enjoyed your time here in the Netherlands! It's always interesting to see from a foreigner's perspective when it's all so normal for us. You're fitting right in here with your height!
The 3 crosses in the Amsterdam flag..... People gives different meaning to it I know 3 of them First the 3 plagues that hits the city (diseases) Second it stands for; Heroic, Determination and Mercifull, But some people say they stand for the 3 canals Prinsen, Heren, Keizersgracht.... To me as a native citizen of Amsterdam its the second one. Hope you enyoyed your stay.😊
I’m 1.88m and I’m the shortest among my 4 siblings who are all over 1.96m except me 😂 mainly because throughout my childhood and teen hood I didn’t eat, sleep a lot and didn’t like exercising but spent too much playing video games from day light to late night instead. Gene isn’t only the biggest thing to being tall but also enough nutritions, sleep and exercise when you’re a kid or teen. Anyway, most people are over 1.80m. Hope you come here again. Greeting from Netherlands 🇳🇱
Nah is genetics. Perhaps you got weaker genes from your mom or something. I know a guy who’s 172cm with perfect diet and his brother who ate junk food is 185cm.
There might not be as many gyms all over, but also out of sight and there are fitness incentives at primary schools. Children are introduced to sports early on and you have to learn to swim in primary school. It usually sticks as a habit. I played soccer on my own and Judo, then was introduced to volleyball through such a program and stuck with it. Graduating to high school at 12 years old, I stopped soccer and Judo, but kept with volleyball because I liked it the most. They get exercise at sports clubs and rarely it doubles as a gym. One of the locations I practice volleyball is a sports center and has equipment. The Judo location also had a gym. We cycle too, but that alone is generally not enough.
The Three X's are not X's, they are an 'Andreas-cross,' It is Christian heraldry. It was inherited from a noble family called 'Persijn' that had it on their family crest, so this part then became the crest of Amsterdam. There is no relation to the American-origin of the modern 'triple X' meanings. Just a case of 'convergent evolution.'
Just saying one thing, in my 24 years of living in the Netherlands I have never eaten, seen or heard somebody talking about eating jam with their stroopwafel😂😂😂 I don't think it will be a nice combination. At least it's not traditional. Very nice video tho!
Just a little note, in the Netherlands you aren't required to blur people you film out in public on the street. (just trying to save you some future work :) )
3:25 I have to disagree here! I studied in South-Korea, and I felt like the gym culture in Korea was way smaller. I had trouble finding stores for protein shakes, creatine and all that stuff ^^. There were a lot of (smaller) gyms in Korea, but the Netherlands has bigger gyms in general. Gym culture has been growing a lot in the last decade, nowadays everyone and their moms go to the gym in the Netherlands.
Everyone who's interested in it. And that's not as many people as you seem to think. It even reminds me of a meme about a local gym that said something among the lines of: "Do you go to Basic Fit, or are you just a sponsor?" It implied that many people will sign up, but end up never going.
It isnt actually known what the x's mean. But it is thought that it refers to the three 'plagues' that have hit Amsterdam: water (floodings), fire (Amsterdam burning down) and the black death.
Just discovered your channel and I love your perspective on my home country❤ When you pay us a visit again, you should go to the Northern city Groningen. It has a beautiful old city center and canals, and is way less focust on tourism. Also people living in the North of the Netherlands are taller then the rest of the country.
@@Molr026 Ja, mijn favoriete winkelstraat in Groningen is de Folkingestraat. Die heeft veel kleine unique winkels. Qua restaurants en cafés heb je veel keuze. Je moet gewoon bij een naar binnen stappen😊
I'm from the Philippines(in the Northern province of Luzon). I often struggled to fit in tricycles & jeepneys(Philippine Transportation). Sometimes, my clothes are custom made, because some clothes don't fit me including sneakers. My neck always hurt when talking down to people, and they often ask me if I play basketball, yet I'm only 178cm(5'10") tall! But I also see some people taller than me, probably about 1 or 2 inches taller, seeing like 1 to 3 people taller than me once a day depending on where you are. People in tourist spots are often have tall people than on the streets. I stand out wherever I go, I get stares sometimes when walking down the street, I often got mistaken as a foreigner or a tourist, even though I'm pure Filipino and local here. I can't imagine a 193cm guy walking in my local town, yet alone my whole country. I already get stares when I walk down the streets, but you'll get stared by every person you walk by, even from a distance. You're gonna make everyone feel like they're pre-school again. I can't imagine myself going to Netherlands, I'll feel like a kid again. :)
With your hight you would blend in easy in the Netherlands, avarage height of the males is 1m84 and the females 1m70. 2,5% of the males is longer than 1m98 and with the females 1m84. I am 1m91, my wife 1m80 and my son of 18 is 1m85. My granddad was 2m05 and my uncle is 1m93 so it's probably in the genes.

Great video! Thanks! Im also Dutch from the Netherlands, very interesting! At timestamp 16:14 in the video, she says that everything except restaurants close around 6-7 PM, but that's not true. Most stores close at 5-6 PM. However, one day a week, stores close later than 6 PM. This is called 'koopavond' (shopping evening), usually on Thursdays in big cities and Fridays in smaller cities or villages. On that day, stores typically close around 9 PM. This applies to clothing stores and similar shops. Supermarkets and grocery stores, on the other hand, are usually open until later, typically until 10 PM, but some stay open until 12 PM. Then there are also evening shops, which are open from noon, until 12 PM midnight. There are also night shops (nachtwinkels), which are open much later, usually until around 2-3 AM, and some even stay open until 5-6 AM. And some places are even open 24/7. Night shops are generally small and only sell basic items. They are often used by people who need alcohol or tobacco. The shops are as well being used a lot by people involved in the nightlife. Though I’m not sure if night shops are still allowed to sell tobacco anymore. Al these night shops and evening shops are typically used by people who forgot to buy something or are in an emergency and really need to buy something they need at that moment. There are not many evening/night shops 24/7 open places in the Netherlands. I live in a pretty big city, but there is only 1 evening shop and one night shop. And for the 24/7 McDonalds drive thru-only restaurant, we have to drive 30 minutes on the highway to another city. :) As for the most common opening hours for horeca and restaurants in the Netherlands: Restaurants: Weekdays: 10 AM - 11 PM, Weekends: 11 AM - 12 AM Fast food: 12 PM - 1 AM, sometimes 24/7 Cafés/Bars: 12 PM - 1 AM, Weekends: 2 AM - 3 AM Clubs/Discotheques: 4 AM - 5 AM, sometimes later Terraces: Usually until 11 PM, sometimes later in nightlife areas.
Dutch is the official native language we speak in the Netherlands. The Netherlands is also the 1. country with the most non-native English speakers. Pretty much everyone in the Netherlands speaks English. And besides English, a lot of people also speak some German, French or other languages as their 3rd language
For me as Dutch person about your length, I choose to go to a army dump store. Here they sell both used as brand new clothes, so for each person there is something. I will usually use army boots, army pants and army shirts. Army pants are a advantage as you have extra pockets plus the material makes it dry a lot faster. Your army pants will dry so fast that you hardly have any discomfort, so that's very good to have. Also you can get them in solid colors without the camo printing on it if this is required. Another big plus is that these pants isolate very good, even the summer variants can be used in winter and still keep you warm just fine. Army boots I use because I walk a lot and usually off road. So good grip is a must have. Also it helps that the boots isolate well for winter but are cool enough for summer. And the shirt is just a common decent looking button shirt which is enough for most weather types. It however gets sweaty quickly in winter haha. Regarding the money for a bottle thing. This you misunderstood a little. When you buy a full bottle or metal can you often pay a little extra, that small bottle she showed you pay 15 cents extra for example. When you go to a machine that she showed, you can put the bottles and metal cans in that have that icon on it. This will give you a ticket that you take to the shop service desk for example and you get the extra amount payed back in cash. You can also go shop for groceries and use it when you pay for your groceries. It will automatically take that amount off. This is done so less trash ends up on the streets pretty much. Amsterdam Flag meaning: "The official city motto is Valor, Resolution, and Mercy. The three X's, saltires (St. Andrew's crosses), are taken to represent these even though the X's are older than the motto. A popular tradition also links the X's to the three threats to the city: Water, Fire and Pestilence." For filming in the Netherlands, the law clearly states everyone is free to record in public area's. Also no need for blurring faces as in public you can't expect privacy in public as there are camera's everywhere in most cities. If not tourist or professional photographer, then CCTV for example. So it can save a lot of trouble When you come back, please let me know and I'd be happy to help you out a bit where possible. Plenty of great locations to visit that will really be interesting for you. Staying in Amsterdam only is such a waste, If you do decide to come please make sure you can try to stay for a longer period of time so you can roam around a bit more. I hope you enjoyed your stay and please be welcome back!
every old city starts as a "city centre" the place everyone wants to live and work in, but its too busy so the city expands, this happened a thousand years ago, seoul did not have this history and thus there is no real city centre

Prinsen, Heren, Keizersgracht....
To me as a native citizen of Amsterdam its the second one.

(just trying to save you some future work :) )
What a lovely and friendly lady at ca 9min lol
3:25 I have to disagree here! I studied in South-Korea, and I felt like the gym culture in Korea was way smaller. I had trouble finding stores for protein shakes, creatine and all that stuff ^^. There were a lot of (smaller) gyms in Korea, but the Netherlands has bigger gyms in general. Gym culture has been growing a lot in the last decade, nowadays everyone and their moms go to the gym in the Netherlands.
Good to know! 😊
Everyone who's interested in it.
And that's not as many people as you seem to think.
It even reminds me of a meme about a local gym that said something among the lines of: "Do you go to Basic Fit, or are you just a sponsor?"
It implied that many people will sign up, but end up never going.
its usually officer workers that have to compensate for a passive lifestyle.
넘 재밌어요😂😂😂
😚
It isnt actually known what the x's mean. But it is thought that it refers to the three 'plagues' that have hit Amsterdam: water (floodings), fire (Amsterdam burning down) and the black death.
Right!

As for the most common opening hours for horeca and restaurants in the Netherlands:
Restaurants: Weekdays: 10 AM - 11 PM, Weekends: 11 AM - 12 AM
Fast food: 12 PM - 1 AM, sometimes 24/7
Cafés/Bars: 12 PM - 1 AM, Weekends: 2 AM - 3 AM
Clubs/Discotheques: 4 AM - 5 AM, sometimes later
Terraces: Usually until 11 PM, sometimes later in nightlife areas.

Amsterdam Flag meaning:
"The official city motto is Valor, Resolution, and Mercy. The three X's, saltires (St. Andrew's crosses), are taken to represent these even though the X's are older than the motto. A popular tradition also links the X's to the three threats to the city: Water, Fire and Pestilence."
For filming in the Netherlands, the law clearly states everyone is free to record in public area's. Also no need for blurring faces as in public you can't expect privacy in public as there are camera's everywhere in most cities. If not tourist or professional photographer, then CCTV for example. So it can save a lot of trouble
When you come back, please let me know and I'd be happy to help you out a bit where possible.
