The anime community have been posting this clip for years to showcase the incredible voice acting ,and Crunchyroll now finally decides to post it for more people to see
Based Saori Hayami really single handedly keeping this show relevant off this one scene. Just an amazing performance and VA all around, one of the first VA's I started being able to pick out without checking credits.
I remember watching this anime and thought it was a pretty good comedy but I was simply left speechless during this scene because it was just so impressive seeing Saori Hayami do this in one take without stopping
Masterclass in voice acting and writing for sure. This was a powerful moment as it showed how Hatoko had always been listening intently, always tried her damnedest to understand, relate, and empathize. She could precisely relay all of the specific terms, mythologies, and references he was constantly portray. She even had some deeper contextual understandings of what they were. What she "didn't understand" wasn't the subject matter that Jurai was spitting out, but instead why he placed such existential value on these things he was in no way related to and much more importantly why he insisted on excluding her as being an outsider who just doesn't "get" it. He always viewed her as an indifferent normie and more than anything was taking her friendship for granted. He didn't understand the ways she was reaching out and he thought so little of his exclusion of her efforts. Easily one of the most impactful and emotionally nuanced exchanges I have seen in any anime. It's really too bad they didn't spend more time exploring these dynamics and kind of just leaned into the typical genre tropes for the rest of the season. Feels like so much lost potential with this show. Haha Could've been one of the greats! Always gonna upvote when this scene gets posted.
I was thinking of watching the anime after watching this clip to see if there will be further development of these two. I guess it wouldn't be worth it with what you said. :(
@@missingno9 Haven't watched it since release but I remember being fine with how they resolved it. A lot of people weren't though. Avoiding elaboration for spoilers, but while the show is overall pretty mid this and its resolution I remember being pretty happy with.
@@jy61The resolution feels very half baked, imo. He just sorta goes "you're sorta right but don't worry about it, it's not that serious" and she is suddenly okay with it would have been much more interesting if they had let her presence be the one that tethers him back to reality, brings him down from his daydreams so that he can explain why he thinks the way he does
I was going through a similar phase when this anime came out, when I first saw this scene I had to turn off my computer, sit down, and do a reality check because it really felt like I was being lectured. I guess that's one of the many reasons why this is the best scene in the show and in my opinion, one of the best VA performances in all of anime.
A way I saw it when self reflecting from this show, was that everyone has different interests. Not many people can fully relate on why their interests affect them the way they do, but there are similarities. She explored the subjects not out of her own interests, but to understand the guy better. He enjoys the mindset and hardship that makes a hero, the battles and journey a hero goes through to fully be legendary. He loves the tropes that create iconic stories. She likes him. Everyone can be broken down into simpler explanations on who they are and what they like, it gets complicated when experience and personal interests combine.
@@andrewmiller3478 She likes him and wants him to improve, because he is stuck in this permanent ''i'm pathethic, powerless and i can't even control my own powers, they devour me'' mindset, which filtered to his real life. You could say she wanted to understand the stuff he liked to know what he found cool about being a loser who can't do anything properly and won't even try to improve, blaming his lack of progress on something else. I say the author did an amazing job at pointing out all of those things with her speech. Adding this is a parody of the chuunibyo syndrome to her speech, it feels like a commentary on how people need to separate their enjoyment of fiction and real life relationship and behavior. Heck, she even tells him to speak with his own words, meaning she knows he's just putting up an act and hiding behind a mask (which is the most normal thing in japanese society) instead of facing reality. Which also serves as a way of telling him (albeit in a very harsh manner) that she wants to be closer with him and is tired of him putting barriers between them.
This is one of the best self aware moments in anime. Jurai uses all the chunibyou stuff he has accumulated to make himself feel more important than he actually is and to cope with massive insecurities he has about himself. In the same vein he takes all the people in his life who genuinely care of him for granted. He doesn't feel that Hakoto will ever abandon him or turn her back on him so he treats her however he sees fit. Her outburst is one of the only times he actually has to examine himself and develop his character - something he desperately needs. It's a great take on how so many people are in real life. They are so desperate to feel important or special that they are willing to overlook the people who truly care for them in order to achieve that which they think they are lacking. They look down on ordinary people as if it's a bad thing but it's all to cover for the fact that they can't fit in with such people. This scene gets glossed over all the time because a lot of people who watch it feel it hits too close to home and I can understand why that happens. I love this scene for challengi g that though. Anything that allows you to confront the uncomfortable parts of yourself is positive for personal growth.
I can understand others comments on this being good voice acting but I think actually looking at the scene and understanding it as you have is much better. I was struggling to try to put words to my thoughts in explaining this until I came across your comment which nailed everything super well. Thank you random internet stranger!
Couldn't have been said any better. The first time I saw this clip I didn't finish I couldn't finish it, now 7 years later, life has pruned everything out of me. And I do really get where she's coming from. It is actually sad. Strength to everyone who's fighting any sorta insecurities and difficulties in life that's making them act out that way. And if gets too tough, turn to Jesus. That's how I made it through.
Finally an analysis on the scene itself. Too many people talking about the voice actress doing this in one take like anyone who watches the series would know that just by watching
To be honest. When I saw this scene way back when it first released in 2014, something changed in me. I was quite the shut in and was fascinated by the same stuff as Jurai. I never had much friends or close family. When I saw this, I realized maybe how other people felt around me. That’s why I stopped doing research and started to delve way deeper into things I am interested to explain people properly. I wanted to be understood and wanted to people to understand what I say. Now almost 10 years later I’m on my best way to become a teacher and go into elaborate and detailed explanations for about everything people ask. To make myself understood. And in hinsight it’s all because of that scene…
I know this is a really old comment but for real, I think a good place to start is asking yourself if when you talk to people you are asking them to do more work to understand you then you are doing to communicate. If you knowThe person you are talking to doesn't understand the theory of relativity, then don't just reference it and then keep going. Do the work to change what you are saying into an analogy that will explain what you are talking about. Try to understand what about the things you say could potentially confuse or frustrate people and address them yourself without making them have to ask for clarification. Otherwise it comes off as though you don't actually care whether or not they understand you you just want to hear yourself talk. Even if that's not the case eventually that's how people start to feel at least from my experience when I was younger. I'm a much better communicator ever since I started thinking about how my words would make other people feel.@@alejandrorivas4585
@@alejandrorivas4585I know this is 5 months old, but what I was taught was to assume everyone you talk to knows literally nothing about what you’re talking about (unless you know they’re also knowledgeable on the topic). You should also try and make parallels between the subject you’re talking about, and their personal interests or experience, which also shows the person you’re talking to that you value them and their input. If you explain things to people in a complex way that isn’t easy to understand and without parallels, a lot of people take it as arrogance or you just wanting to show off your knowledge, similar to someone who speaks exclusively with “big words” to people they just met.
To this day this is one of the greatest anime voice acting moments! You can hear the passion, the crackling of the emotion the character is going through. You could even close your eyes and imagine the expression someone would make pouring these lines out as if experiencing this kind of pain, it’s beautiful work.
I haven't seen this anime but that the girl remembers all this shows how much she cares about him and how much she tried to understand him. Huge respect 🙌
And how much of a loser he is for not only being too stupid to figure that out, but to be so self absorbed to dismiss her interests in those things so easily
Dude I never seen this anime but I felt her emotions so much that I got goosebumps and tears up Like she got a god tier voice and her acting is incredible
I feel sorry for Hatoko getting upset of Jurai just not talking & annoying her. This scene has excellent emotional drama that this is my personal favourite.
I’m honestly speechless by this amazing performance. You can feel the hurt, sadness, anger, and confusion from her voice mixed with hard facts makes this scene powerful. But there’s one question about this, why does it have to be in this show? It’s pretty sad that this scene is the only thing memorable about it. At the very least, I’ll give this show some credit for making this scene possible. Saori Hayami, you’re a legend.
In this scene..Saori Hayami became one of my favorite seiyu/voice actress in anime. The sadness and rage in her voice in this scene reflects how much passion she displayed that left me speechless 😮. MY RESPECT TO HER 😎👍
This scene been living in my head rent free ever since I watched this show many years ago. Fun fact about this scene: Hayami Saori only did this scene in A SINGLE TAKE. She tried to do it again in a Q&A cause someone asked if she could, she tried but couldn't even get close to how she performed it the 1st time.
It really feels she was either fully in the zone, or had a experience where she could at the time, relate to those feelings. It really is a powerful scene, and to find out the anime is a comedy is crazy
@@ow_su I mean just look at the view count on this scene compared to how irrelevant this series otherwise is. This one vocal performance literally elevates the entire show all by itself.
I mean if you tell me there's an even better voice acting performance i see this as an absolute wind cause that'd mean there is something even greater than this scene But i've never seen anything top it off. Even some of the 'turning crazy' or 'evil laugh' or other rage moments (like Gon's rage, Kira laugh, Eren crazy etc) i haven't seen any reach quite the same impact. In a way these above described scenarios are in a way 'easily emotional' like an easy cheat code for it. This scene benefits immensely from being very long, whilst being consistent on the intensity all the way through. The possibility of such a scene existing is quite rare in itself. And it doesn't even really need context yo hit you full powers even up to tears. Whereas many other scenes would. There's also the legendary aspect of it being done in a single take. It's legendary and for great reasons
Haven't seen this show in a long time and this scene brings chill through out my body. It even made my heart stop and I started to cry. Nonetheless this was a good show. Wish there was another season
Or better yet comics or convoluted game series like Final Fantasy. I read comics and play video games, but I still want to give this response when people start quoting golden age or silver age.

This scene left me speechless. I legit had to just sit here for a sec after it ended, and Ive never even heard of this show. I can only imagine just how impactful this scene must be with the context of an entire show backing it up. Huge props to the people behind this.
I remember seeing this clip on instagram a few years back. I had never seen the show before, but I sat and watched the entire clip. I must have been in my freshman year. The way she portrayed these emotions so beautifully left me speechless for a few minutes. I have been a Hayami Saori simp ever since then. I love you Meltryllis.
This scene still gives me chills every time I watch it. Such an _amazing_ performance by Saori Hayami. I cannot praise it more. So good! What's sad is that nothing comes of it, story wise. Not much development of anything. At least in the anime.
This. This scene came out of nowhere and I cried, not out of sadness, but out of feeling the emotion she was unleashing. I watched the episodes as they released and it was a fun watch, there were some sad moments but overall it was something that was a casual watch, until this moment. This one scene is something that has always stuck with me because of how out of left field it comes. We see this cheerful character breaking down without buildup or foreshadowing, it just happens and even then the actress makes it feel so natural.
2023 and this is still one of the best voice acting performances in any show(not just anime) period. Even if the show itself is average at best. This VA should be proud of her work. Update: 2024 still gives me chills and one of the best VA performances in anime.
This is why Hayami Saori is my favorite voice actor ever. She might use the same tone for many characters but in terms of actual voice acting she is above all the rest. The way she conveys her character's emotions so effortlessly even if its in 2d. But even if we talk about range she can go from Himawari(Boruto), Shouko(A silent voice), Shinobu(Demon slayer), and Yumeko(Kakegurui).
Definitely one of the best voice acting I have heard yet. Really happy that Crunchyroll finally decided to upload this scene with English sub, I remember trying to search for this scene a year or two ago (it somehow wasn’t on yt anymore) because I remembered this incredible scene and wanted re-experience it.😊

What gets me the most, is this person he is supposed to care for, is standing there pouring her heart out. She trying to relate to and understand him, but durring her entire breakdown he just stands there dumbfounded, cant even be bothered to put down his phone let alone hug her. 😢
He stands there dumbfounded trying to process what she's saying and is almost certainly socially awkward around people that aren't into the same things he is, also if she's been around him long enough to have memorized all those terms and things and still hasn't grasped what he finds so enticing about it all then he's probably right saying she wouldn't understand if he tried to explain it. This scene always hit me as two people with widely differing interests trying to be friends and simply not getting along as one of them had interests that fit in with the other kids and was treated favorably by other people while he has long given up trying to fit in with people that he doesn't.
@@trawll8659 It sounds like she tried, but he probably has more info available to him that she doesn't even with Google. If she's been around you this long and has remembered ALL of this and clearly cares about you this much.... just stop gatekeeping her. She has earned the rights to enter the gate, she isn't a tourist, she's a person genuinely interested in what you're talking about or at the very least interested in YOU and wants to know you better..... but can't because you keep putting up the gate when she gets close. I'm normally for gatekeeping tourists with ulterior motives out, but her only ulterior motive seems to be to know the protag better because she loves him.
The only time I've seen Soari Hayami voicing a character like that and I was amazed since I first saw that scene in the anime. Usually she does other roles but this is one of the best if not the best tantrum I've ever seen in anime.
So glad to finally have an official link of this scene that's not at risk of being taken down. While the anime may not have been one that I personally connected with, this is one of my favourite anime scenes and one of my favourite examples of voice acting ever.
I still remember watching this when it was airing. No way it was 8 years ago... Anyways, the build up to this scene and this scene was just amazing. And now that I'm older, I can totally understand what she really means. How the main character just being a chuuny, spilling out all this nonsense just because it sounds cool, without actually knowing more than the little he reads on the first wikipedia page. He didn't deserve her.
@Firelord Eliteast67 no he doesn't that's the whole point, just because you read the wikipedia page about schrodinger's cat does not mean you understand quantum physics
I mean, the real problem comes when you try to explain why you find something cool. It's perfectly fine to like things just because you think they're cool even if you don't really understand them. But if someone asks you "why is it cool" and you can't explain it, it becomes hard to connect. That's not a problem when 2 chuunis talk since they both will find it cool, but a normal person won't get it. And if said normal person keeps wanting to understand, it becomes painful.
literally didn't watch a single episode of this show but found this scene clipped somewhere and it blew my mind. i knew Saori Hayami was amazing, probably already was my favorite seiyuu, but this right here is mind blowing. i have no clue on what is going on or the context behind this and it still managed to grab me in a way i forgot what was going on around me. masterclass in voice acting
The whole scene did a 180, it was hard to keep up. Absolute chills the whole way through that shows just how amazing of a friend she has been for trying her best to keep up, but alas, couldn't take it any longer. How many years did she bottle it up? How many book recommendations did she get that she never understood? How much research did she do? These are the qualities of a friend... but a best friend would have spoken up from the beginning.
Hmmm idk if I totally agree, I feel like it's not about whether the person is a best friend or what a best friend would have done as opposed to a normal friend (honestly a lot of the qualities you referenced go far beyond the scope of friend) What this has to do with is one best friend doing next to nothing to understand the other best friend. The female character did her best to get through to her friend but he was hard headed and she was not, her not being able to break through that exterior when it was so constantly forced into her face does not invalidate her position as a best friend imo. Heck, in the same vain you could say that a best friend would actually attempt to involve their so called best friend into their world in a way that was more palatable or at least try to make her feel comfortable with not being into it
Going back to this, it's one of the best examples of Hayami Saori's brilliance, she will always be known for her dreamy soft voice (which is understandable) yet her display of emotions is among the greatest ever, see fight scenes where she expresses anger and frustration, for example Atalanta Alter in Fate/Apocrypha and Fate/Grand Order, the amount of pain she displayed was out of this world, she overshadowed some of the industry greats in these shows
I only watched clips of this anime so I never really understood what was going on but it really took me a whole year to realize she confronted bro for having middle school syndrome 💀💀 All jokes aside, you can feel the depth in that one-take scene where Saori Hayami just pours in so much emotion and yet articulates her words so well at the same. Really brings in a refreshing level of respect for VA's out there and just how powerful their voices are.
From what I remember, she is confronting him because she likes him and she is trying to get to know the things he likes but him being your typical anime protagonist (dense), he doesn't realize it so he doesn't really take the time to teach\explain all the nonsense he like to do. Like you see in the clip, but this time she snapped
I am very impressed by this actress. She made an incredible speech, using Japanese, English and even northern terms flawlessly. What she said this guy is indecisive, wishy-washy, lazy and just uses big words to pretend being smart and cool. I appreciate the fun of being a chunni but it sounds like this guy cannot sperate reality from his own BS world.
I first saw this clip on Tumblr, because it went viral for the voice actress' amazing performance. But unfortunately I never saved the name of the anime. I randomly got an ad for Crunchyroll for this today and instantly recognised it via the thumbnail. I've liked it to save it, so when I'm ready, I can finally watch it.
Seriously, Saori Hayami blew this scene out of the park with that performance, and with one take... Like it's so goddamn powerful, I can feel every bit of emotion and shock and frustration out of it. Just perfect execution.
He just stood there...not even a hint of saddness, compassion or even anger just a confused smug on his face not understading anything his supposed childhood friend feels.. and the worst offender isnhow they both pretend this never happened the day after.
@@Vert_GreenHeartEven if she tries to understand, she can't. All the things her friend does is filled with emotions, she's asking to logically explain emotions, and that's just impossible to do
@@patatayt1919 I think it goes beyond literally asking what he meant. They're both partially at fault, him for not realising the feelings of his precious friend and her for not realising how dense he is, also she fell for a stupid chuuni so I guess she gets what she deserves.
Vi este anime cuando estaba en emisión, está escena me dejo bocabierto, desde ese momento esta actriz de voz se volvió una de mis favoritas, dios, actúa demasiado bien.
You can really feel how, on one hand, this is just the character talking about another character in the show, and on the other hand, the writer is absolutely seething as they line all the Light Novelists up against the wall to put them down.
I watched all that anime and I really liked that scene because of the girl's concern for the protagonist... I even cried to see how she broke down and the anime has a lot of potential for a second season.
I come back to watch this every once in a while. I know this sounds nerdy, but it's actually a pretty powerful scene. It comes from out of nowhere and hits like a damn truck when you least expect it, like 7 episodes into the show. You can tell that the writer and the actress really felt strongly about this subject.
I saw this scene the day it aired, and it left me aghast. Really one of the moments in anime that left me crying real tears because of the raw emotion.
I remember this scene, and I also remember that nothing happened afterwards regarding it. It seems that things went back to normal and this wasn’t addressed whatsoever. I was like really, they should’ve at least talk it out rather than just ignoring it completely.
this is one of the only points in this series I'm critical of. THIS was absolutely stunning. She laid her emotions entirely bare, after he was continually dismissive of her all day. when the get her back, She receives a bland apology in comparison to the rest of the show. he did her dirty in this episode.
what gets me is that she so desperately wants to understand him and the worlds he speaks of, but it's as if he's been using it as a way from gatekeeping her from becoming closer to him :(
He hasn't. Here she is basically asking to be explained that she fundamentally cannot understand. Everything he says is based on feeling, yet she finds all of it illogical. She is asking a logical explanation for emotions, and that's impossible.
I passed on reading the light novel of this because I just wasn't interested in another series that was more comedy than action. But after seeing this I think I'm gonna read it after all, if only to get the proper context for what seemed like an explosion of emotion so sudden and expected that my buddy had a full on, "Miss this is a Wendy's" expression for almost 3 minutes.
I feel like this was written for anime fans and how we gatekeep our favorite genres, literally everything she was saying was relevant and now I feel bad. Excellent writing, exceptional VA, extravagant FEEL. Anime always breaks the 4th wall in the best ways when it needs to that many attempts just end up feeling campy and this is why we love anime and mostly I'm just typing this for the algorithm keep it up crunchyroll and Japan, we're glad we got you on our side.

Avoiding elaboration for spoilers, but while the show is overall pretty mid this and its resolution I remember being pretty happy with.

would have been much more interesting if they had let her presence be the one that tethers him back to reality, brings him down from his daydreams so that he can explain why he thinks the way he does
Lets be real, it was never gonna be "one of the greats." Even if it didn't lean back into those tropes.
But it certainly could've been much better
Placing existential value on things he is in no way related to? Sounds like faith and religion.

@ZetaNeonFox you have to be harsh in this kind of subject or the point won't get through
This is one of the best self aware moments in anime.
What was the aftermath of this scene?
Real talk, how did you do it? I feel i wanna make a similar change
Same here
I know this is a really old comment but for real, I think a good place to start is asking yourself if when you talk to people you are asking them to do more work to understand you then you are doing to communicate.
@@darrenross5869 Its still preciated hugs

You forgeted Yotsugi (monogatari) Ha-chan (Mahotsukai Precure) and Yukino (Oregairu). All of those are perfect works...

Well, at least I'll remember this anime as the one with the scene with the best voice acting i've ever heard and keep it in my memory this way.
What gets me the most, is this person he is supposed to care for, is standing there pouring her heart out. She trying to relate to and understand him, but durring her entire breakdown he just stands there dumbfounded, cant even be bothered to put down his phone let alone hug her. 😢
Never seen the show, but if it's set in Japan then that would be socially unacceptable.

@Firelord Eliteast67 "I'm something of a quantum physicist myself!" 🥴

If there was ever an Oscar for best voice performance... I found a heavy contender. That was amazing.
Hmmm idk if I totally agree, I feel like it's not about whether the person is a best friend or what a best friend would have done as opposed to a normal friend (honestly a lot of the qualities you referenced go far beyond the scope of friend)
What this has to do with is one best friend doing next to nothing to understand the other best friend. The female character did her best to get through to her friend but he was hard headed and she was not, her not being able to break through that exterior when it was so constantly forced into her face does not invalidate her position as a best friend imo.
Heck, in the same vain you could say that a best friend would actually attempt to involve their so called best friend into their world in a way that was more palatable or at least try to make her feel comfortable with not being into it
I find it so funny that she's having a mental breakdown and the dude's just sitting there like *"😦"*

Going back to this, it's one of the best examples of Hayami Saori's brilliance, she will always be known for her dreamy soft voice (which is understandable) yet her display of emotions is among the greatest ever, see fight scenes where she expresses anger and frustration, for example Atalanta Alter in Fate/Apocrypha and Fate/Grand Order, the amount of pain she displayed was out of this world, she overshadowed some of the industry greats in these shows
I only watched clips of this anime so I never really understood what was going on but it really took me a whole year to realize she confronted bro for having middle school syndrome 💀💀
All jokes aside, you can feel the depth in that one-take scene where Saori Hayami just pours in so much emotion and yet articulates her words so well at the same.

He just stood there...not even a hint of saddness, compassion or even anger just a confused smug on his face not understading anything his supposed childhood friend feels.. and the worst offender isnhow they both pretend this never happened the day after.

He hasn't. Here she is basically asking to be explained that she fundamentally cannot understand. Everything he says is based on feeling, yet she finds all of it illogical. She is asking a logical explanation for emotions, and that's impossible.
I come back to this scene from time to time because it’s so impressive.
How was it?
This feels like a critique on the whole eccentric mc, "promised girl" bs and "Canon vs fandom" argument all at once. Nicely done
I haven’t watched this anime but GOD DAMN THAT ACTING, it almost makes me want to watch it just for this scene
Why thank you Gigguk for showing me this truly amazing performance
You can tell those are Years of pent frustration seeing the light

She poured her Heart and Soul into that
Meanwhile he's just like 😮
"What you have to understand is that the concept of a character using things larger than the individual itself as a symbol when the author has a passing knowledge of the subject matter make the whole affair feel shallow just for the blatant fabrication of an image of power. I find it rather sad that generations of creators aren't willing to speak from their hearts out of insecurity. Showcasing the vulnerability of your true self isn't weakness, it is the strenght of being human with no shame whatsoever"
