One thing Lewis says is something that hung me up for years. No one is "original". We all came out of a slew of players over our years of listening. The higher quality player you listen to the better your concept will be if...you have the passion and talent. Some players can listen to the best and still sound terrible because they don't have it. Not everyone can be a great player. Or even a mediocre one. It is a gift. Recognize that and you are on your way.
Great stuff. A teacher I knew would give students one instrument, a drum, or HH or cowbell, sent them away for 20 min w/ the instruction: find out how many sounds you can make with this. Come back and show me. LOVE that. "It's all just sound and vibration anyway." YES!
hey, thanks for this, it was excellent to hear a great drummer talking about the meaning of being a member of the overall sound, and how to achieve it, by first seeing it...
Brilliant video series! ive been a fan of lewis nash since joe lovano's '52nd street themes', and i believe that MVP stands for most valuable player :)
Not only that, no great originator's MOTIVATION was ever to intentionally BE an innovator. They all were just searching for their own way through the discipline to express themselves. In fact, being original IS a natural state. You can't help but sound like yourself. No effort required. What great musicians do is get enough skill to allow this to come through them and find their way in the music. Copy one, THAT'S plagiarism, copy from many varied sources that's called RESEARCH.
In sports it stands for "Most Valuable Player", in other words Michael Jordan or Kobe or whoever you want to use as an example. It's the person who contributed the most to the team. "Most Valuable Percusionist" is a clever spin on it. =)
Drumming has always been mainly Conceptual and perspectively creative within whats asked of Music or playing them , All else is EGO. get off it . on the good foot..Lewis is a Blessing :.
And don't listen to jazz only. Listen to classical music too. Miles & Evens were listening to Stravinsky & other early 20th century composers when the made the Birth of the Cool recording. That single recording created a whole new approach to jazz. And listen as much as you can. Jazz is ear music not sheet music.
amazing
Same drum set as I have: modern drum shop, NY. Great drums and great drummer.

Great video, Lewis is very intelligent and inspiring. But what does MVP stand for, Most Valuable Person?
MVP stands for Most Valuable Player. It's primarily a sports term.
Does anyone know how I could go about contacting Mr. Nash for some session work? His website doesn't seem to be up and running. Thanks in advance!
Try through The Nash, or via Sakae drums.

What a brilliant jazz mind! Instead of just practicing technique. Be a listener and lift
The group as a unit.
Lewis is one of the great Jazz drummers of our era.
What he is saying is NO EGOS. Zen.... submit you ego to the music
