How sad. I loved every book by Mark Twain. My brother died of a seizure at age 27. His was somewhat controlled with medication & he had many good years. Two days before he died he went snorkeling & diving & we think he may have gone too deep. ❤❤❤RIP Pete
My heart goes out to you….I know how it feels to lose a brother at such a young age. (My brother was 23 years old when he died.) May he rest in peace. Be Blessed!
How very sad. I lost my 25 year old daughter from e seizure from brain injury 6 months before that. She never had them before. The brain is so intricate and tricky.
The head injury could of acted like an 'on' switch, she may never of had any seizures if she hadnt suffered from the head injury, or she could of anyway. Its almost impossible to tell the cause of seizures because Twain stopped having them indicating he had an 'off' switch. Epilepsy is a horrible thing to live with.
@@lucasroche8639 My brother's very good friend tried to stop a fight in the hall at Highschool. Some misery slammed him and when he hit the floor he kicked his head a few times.Yes, he became Epileptic and there was predisposition to it in his family. Very, very intelligent, he studied at University and moved away to a great job and hopefully a great life ! Sadly while I knew him, he was very secretive about his illness. The stigma attached to it is brutal and very much exists to this day ! Sad !
A collateral ancestor of mine, a steelworker, disappeared in the 1890s and was found miles away a couple of days later, with leg burns, confused. It resulted in a diagnosis of epilepsy (Other records that most branches of that family had someone with epilepsy.) The epilepsy was blamed in “masturbation and alcohol.” It was seen as a moral disease, even though some of his cousins had died of seizures in infancy. Because he had been born over 300 years away, a place he had not been since infancy, he was sent there to a mental hospital, effectively a prison. His mother managed to see him three more times before he died, aged 46.
@@professorgraemeyorston Of course, alcohol can trigger a seizure, but that really wasn’t what they meant. He was a working class guy, so drinking alcohol was another moral failing. Dickens was correct, that well off people grudge the poor every last possible pleasure.
Very sad, I have a type of epilepsy that causes me to pass out unexpentantly without warning sadły both my brothers suffered also, much more seriously, it was inherited from my fathers mother.
My friend had lifelong epilepsy which was well controlled by medication. She was also an expert swimmer and was on a synchronized swim team well into her 70s. She had to avoid alcohol as it was a seizure trigger.
I have seizures every month or so but I don’t have epilepsy so I can watch MSA without convulsing on the ground but I can’t exactly be around flashing lights and stuff like that
I think it was the oldest daughter, Suzy, who died from a brain tumor when she was 25 - and his son died when he was a baby, but the middle daughter, Clara, lived as far as the 1960s, but I don’t like her, all that time, keeping one of his books, “ Letters From the Earth”, from being published.
They were set up in the 19th century as private mental hospitals didn't want to admit "incurables" as they lowered their cure rates and made them seem less effective!
Many people with epilepsy don't realize how dangerous the chances of drowning is for them. I also knew a young woman with epilepsy, who drowned in her bathtub. She had been warned against it by both family and friends, especially since she lived alone. I even suggested to her to get a trained dog, since I had seen one on TV that saved it's human by opening the drain and keeping his head above water. She told me she'd think about it, but the news of her death came a few weeks later. 😭
He wrote a historical novel about the life of St. Joan of Arc. He began writing this book after the death of one of his daughters, who died from meningitis. I remember reading something that he saw his daughter in his daughter. I think the cover of the book is from one of Twain's drawings of the saint. It took him 12 years to write the book.
I source I read goes back to the 90's. I read though that Twain was fascinated with Joan of Arc, and later at the death of Susy, he found comfort in projecting Susy into Joan of Arc. The book can be found by Ignatius Press in the USA. He suffered greatly when Susy died. Then he began to write Joan of Arc. At the time I was doing research on Connecticut Yankee, and was reading a book of letters to his publisher and I found a source Hippolyte Taine from which he took his whole description of royal England and France. Good luck and God bless.
Sad, there always has been a stigma about epilepsy.. My first cousin had epilepsy. With grand mall fits...She would attack her cousins and such. When she was in her twenties, she was sent to a state hospital. She was released. She died from bad deadly seizure.
Samurl Clemens was my 5x-Gteat Uncle. My son has uncontrolled epilepsy but I have never heard of this info. Please contact me as to where you found this info, so that I can dig a little deeper. Thank you.
Just did the home tour where she died. I don’t think she died in her room. I think she spent her days in her grandmothers room as her room was no wider then a single bed in a hallway.
I did not know that there were epilepsy colonies like there were leprosy colonies. What a pity that in that error people were ostracized and imprisoned instead of treated because no one knew..
Epileptic people are going off meds by sticking to a keto diet. The doc's didn't know then to suggest cutting out starches and sugars. Who'd have thought. Poor woman.
I think people still fear it, because they don't know to do if someone has a fit, but I don't think there is the blame attached to it that there once was.
By that time Twain had suffered immeasurable losses.of family. The heart can only take so much !
It was the final straw for him.
Twain outlived all his children
Heartbreaking.
@@professorgraemeyorstonClara VERY much outlived him.
God rest their Souls
How much bad luck can one family endure...😢
They certainly had more than their fare share.
Never take your children's good health for granted. There is so much they don't suffer from. God bless all the children. ❤

Beautiful daughters
They were indeed.

Yet another tragedy in a long line for Twain.

It is still a tough illness now, it was even worse in the 19th century with no real treatments and lots of stigma.

What a sad story. Thanks for sharing this info I did not know
😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
Thanks for listening
His daughter looks just like, even as a child.
He was a great guy, so important in our literary history, but he had too many personal losses. His last writings were pretty dark.
They were, and one can perhaps understand why with so many losses.
So incredibly sad.
And so avoidable.
So sad✨

Thanks for sharing - moral judgments were made on people with mental illness and epilepsy and yes, masturbation was seen as one of the main causes!

I’m so sorry; that must be so difficult! (((Hugs)))
This must be common. My friend passed the same way at the age of 26. 😢
It is well known risk of epilepsy which is why showers are generally recommended.
The doctors should tell everyone with epilepsy never take a bath. Or swim alone. I knew a girl who drown in the bath tub.
We do.
My friend had lifelong epilepsy which was well controlled by medication. She was also an expert swimmer and was on a synchronized swim team well into her 70s. She had to avoid alcohol as it was a seizure trigger.
Twain predicted and came true he was going to leave this world when the next comet came the same time it came when he was born and same w desth.
MOVIE. MOVIE. MOVIE. This would be such an interesting story.
There was certainly enough interesting things going on in Twain's latter years to make a movie.

Yes, his seizures were confined to childhood.

The ketogenic diet is an interesting development in epilepsy but it still needs a lot more research.
First i have heard of this...
Epilepsy sucks
I have questions
How do you have seizures as a child and not as an adult, wgen you have epilepsy? I don't think they had that.
Many people with childhood epilepsy cease to have seizures in adulthood.
😮😢🎉🙏🕊️😘
Christmas evec1999? 😒

There still is tremendous social stigma about anyone having epilepsy.
I think people still fear it, because they don't know to do if someone has a fit, but I don't think there is the blame attached to it that there once was.
that's no genetic problem, it could be there was a lack of oxygen during the birth.
It could be, but why are you so certain it's not genetic.
Seizures can be treated and or significantly reduced with the proper diet. Namely low carb diet.
Ignorants
