In this clip, Kim Johnson talks about the history of the steel pan, from its inception, to the first panorama.
This was filmed for "Sounds Like Steel" a documentary that takes a detailed look into how bands prepare to compete and win in the national panorama competition.
Would love too see the full 2 hours.. God bless him for the history & thank you
Same here! I feel like I could sit and listen to him all day ❤
This video is a short clip from my interview with Kim Johnson, the next release will be on how steel pans are made with Jimi Phillip.
Please keep the clips coming
Definitely! I’m aiming to get clips out at least once a week now :)
Thank you for sharing!!!
Thanks!
I can't wait for more. I'll be honest, I saw this instrument as a bit of a novelty instrument... I play them at the music store when I pick up guitar strings and look at new guitars. I have came away with a deeper understanding of the culture around this instrument and why it exists in the first place... Why it's so important too.
That's awesome to hear, as the reason I started making this documentary was to promote steel pan culture to an international audience :)
Thank for Education Uncle
Music history is always so beautiful, it actually makes me wanna cry. Also, it's funny knowing me and this man know Spanish even deeper than English, but I'm here getting his knowledge about a Spanish-speaking country through a medium that didn't need to be adapted for me. I happen to love languages too! :>
Glad you enjoyed the video! Surprisingly, unlike most neighbouring countries, Trinidad is actually English speaking 🇹🇹
@@chassheppard Wow, it's interesting how peculiar its history is, I need to watch the full thing asap!
So good thank you for the knowledge sharing. Very well filmed too, you deserve to have many views!
Thank you so much for the kind words, make sure to follow along to see the full documentary when it releases.
this. is sick
Is part 2 available? I thoroughly enjoyed part one of the documentary. I teach steel pans at my school and am trying to introduce more of the pans' history and then focus on learning songs. This was great!
Cool!
Incredible content. Loved every second
Absolutely appreciated my brother. Love the knowledge shared. Will be reading more on this topic.
If you'd like to read more, I can highly recommend Kim Johnston's book; The Illustrated Story of Pan, which is liked in the description.
Subbed!! I need to see this whole documentary! This is incredible
Very interesting, thanks for making and sharing this!
Thanks! You can see the rest of the BTS as well as the teaser on my channel :)
Lennox Pierre was the exception in that he was trained in classical music and made an invaluable contribution to develop the musical skills of pan players.
That’s super interesting to learn, I’ll have to do some research on him :)
Exactly, Gerry.
Great work Chas👍🏿
please post more of this interview
Super interesting
This will be AWESOME!!! How did the man who makes the steel drums get started. Is it handed down from one generation to the next?
When is the competition?
Comment for the algorithm
Add ting nah man!
I hope this documentary doesn't excluded the history significance of the steel pan. The rebellion of the African slaves that were forbidden to use their drums upon arrival to the Caribbean led to the invention of the steelpan through paint pans, aluminum tins, and zinc cans. Drumming was used as a form of communication among the enslaved Africans and was subsequently outlawed by the British colonial government in 1883. It was tool used by slaves efforts towards freedom.
Hi, this is absolutely right, and it’s in the first chapter of the doc, coming out this month 👍
I love Trindad and Tobago, the people, the pan, and culture in a whole. I can't wait to see and spread this documentary.
