  • Here's a look back at, and a rumination on, 2022 through the comics that have stuck with me. I didn't look up a list of reads or purchases, just made a list of what I first thought of. When you talked about what was going on in your life when you read these comments and ‘escapism’ reading, it reminds me of when my father was dying of cancer and I read Bone. The world of Bone felt like an ‘escape’ for me as I sat by his bed as he slept. I recently reread Bone and it took me back to that…not in a bad way at all, but to a sort of sanctuary I had. It always will remind me of that time but in a positive way, funny as it might sound.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  Рік тому +6

      Thank you for sharing that experience, and my deepest condolences to you on your loss, whenever it may have been. Having lost my father to cancer in 2020 and more recently my aunt, i know a little bit about how that sitting and waiting goes. It's amazing how many ways reading can affect us, and i wonder if the immediate associations we make last us all our lives. All depends on the intensity, perhaps?

    Amazing to see that people are discovering Aimee de Jongh's works outside the Netherlands and even outside Europe! Also, this vid gave me more amazing comics channels on YT so thanks for that too! [Don't worry, you're still my favourite ;) ]

    Thanks for the personal words to begin with.
    I just wanted to say that my approach to books of all kinds is very similar. Of course, everyone has different ways of dealing with stress, grief, loss, etc. and escapism is of course completely okay and can calm you down.
    In such times, however, I tend to work more with works, that deal with something like that. I mean, love, people, sometimes even directly dealing with death.
    Some comic books and novels but also the texts of some philosophers, have comforted me enormously. In times like these, they brought me closer to the diversity of humans, the wonders of our universe, and the beauty of art.
    Nice recommendations. I wish you all the best!

    • @ftloc

      Thanks so much for that, and i agree completely - I've e often enjoyed a complete escape through reading myself. And enjoy it. But it's exactly that connection you speak of, not removal, that seems to resonate most significantly.

    Thanks for sharing your personal journey through 2022 as an open to the video. Comics reading is such a nice journal/chronicler of our lives, can totally relate to the part about reading reflecting off of our lives and situations that we consume that art in. Wish you a happier 2023!

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  Рік тому +1

      Indeed! For the longest time I believed a piece of art should somehow be viewed in a vacuum, looking at only the mechanics of the craft itself.and although that is still #1 and the most important, I've since come to acknowledge the power of the subjective experience, especially after talking to dozens of readers.
      And thank you so much for the warm thoughts, all the very best to you too!

    You make a good point how personal situation affects the reading experience. Timing matters which is why I often re-read comics I didn´t fully enjoy originally. Just have to "forget" them first to find them again from the shelves.
    I´m also happy you mentioned one of the best comics channels on UA-cam - I too follow @OffMyShelves;)
    Days of Sand has been on my list for some time but I always end up choosing something else. Guy Delisle is always good but I don´t own Factory Days yet.

    Days of Sand aligns its timeline not just with the dustbowl and the depression but also the Works Progress Administration, the WPA, a federally finded intiaitive which, among other things, via assignments like the one given to the protagonist of the book elevated a certain school / period of photojournalism and a generation of photographers like Dorothea Lange. The WPA photographers' emphasis on covering poverty brought issues of ethics and relationships between photographers and subjects when the latter are destitute or imperiled (issues that persist with this trade to this day).
