Thank you for an very informative review. I bought this lens 18 months ago and I am very satisfied with it. Perhaps because it is quite an old design, you ought to DISABLE VR if you are using this lens on a tripod. I did some tests against a standard lens sharpness card to confirm this. The lens is substantially sharper at all apertures with VR turned OFF. In fact, on my good quality geared head, using the lens with VR created a noticeably shimmy after the shutter was engaged. I would agree with your comments about performance at f40. I was surprised at how sharp images of flowers were taken at f40. I believe the minimum aperture is f57 at the closest focussing ranges but with the lens hood attached, I couldn't get close enough to the subject to test that setting! It was very helpful to see the focus stacking demonstrated. My ambition is to upgrade to a D850 at some point so this demo sharpened my ambition to get one :-)

I have the D850 with this lens and it is extremely difficult to get a perfect shot as all those megapixels really bring out the errors in your technique.
Hello. I just bought one and I have question if I may ask and thanks in advance. While shutter button is pressed halfway with VR mode on, the Lens constantly makes some kind of motor noise. That noise doesn’t stop until shutter button is released or after the photo has taken which means shutter button is fully pressed. My others VR lens only make noise 2 times. One at the beginning of shutter button halfway pressed and one more time when shutter button is released. Does your one make the same noise? Or my one makes noise because it’s malfunctioning?
Unfortunately I have not used it yet but it seems to cut a good figure. However, it is again bigger and heavier than the Nikon, but it seems to perform just as well. Thank you for taking time to watch my video.
Sorry for the late reply. I would decide me for the Nikon because of the weight fact. Over 1 kg for a macro lens is for my "kind of workflow" too heavy. If you work always with a tripod and even better with a slider then go for the Sigma. The tripod mount of the Sigma seems to be an important feature. When I take a look on DXOMARK they are almost identical. It's just a question of weight ...
@@3colors No Problem ;) I think that I'll buy the Nikon. First I was a bit sceptic about the age of the 105mm. But as you showed in the video it's no problem beause the lens makes great results with the D850. Are going to make videos about the Nikon 24-70 and the new D780?
That's correct, even in combination with the D850 there are no disadvantages. Since I have the D850 I'm became a big fan of more pixels so I don't see any potential in the D780 for my purposes and in addition I'm still using the D750. A review for the 24-70 could come in the far future.
That's a good question. I suppose it's because of electronic aperture control, what allows a much finer control of the blades. But I wanna be honest I have to do some research to answer that correctly.
Found the right answer: It is because of the distance. When you are at the closest focus distance the aperture can be set up to f/57. At infinity you "only" get f/32. This seems to be a normal behavior on macro lenses.
Man sorry but I can clearly see more detail in the d850 shots than the 36 MPX ones. 36 MPX are awesome but to my eyes its clear that with more resolution this lens wins.
Love the detailed reviews How ever if you do videos for B+H photo on UA-cam... the audience is typically USA. Therefore you might want to add cc: in USD$$ and up date if this lens is still availible. Although I am glad you got a Blk Fri deal of 800euros for 650euros Most USA viewers...need the critical info #1 still available #2 cost in USD... non Blk Fri 3# the lens pouch included in box wouldn't protect my IPhone therefore totally useless!
I'm from Germany. The B&H price is serving as an example for the US-Viewers. And this lens I bought directly from the german Nikon store, if I remember right. That was 4 years ago.
